Summary: One of Jackie's rare disappointments
Review: Jackie Chan plays a salesman who specialises in gym equipment. His life is turned upside down when he discovers his father was a Korean double agent who had made a deal with drug dealers to make super addictive opium. Chan is assigned the task of tracking down his father, who has since defected.
ACCIDENTAL SPY is mainly lacking the slapstick humor and elaborate stuntwork that are Chan's hallmarks. The movies climactic stunt featuring a flaming oil tanker mildly rips off SPEED and LICENSE TO KILL. You'd expect more originality from Chan. The movies' final "twist" will only surprise those who haven't been paying attention, or possess the I.Q of a NZ Green Party member. This isn't one of Chan's best, but the out takes at the end are always fun to watch and ACCIDENTAL SPY is no exception. This went direct to video in NZ. It's not hard to see why. Unfortunately this ranks alongside WHO AM I and THE PROTECTOR in the lower ranks of Jackie's portfolio.

Review: Jackie is back with his usual draw dropping "in your face death" stunts. Non stop action and comedy on a roller coaster ride. A must for any Chan fan.

Summary: Accidental Surprise
Review: Jackie shows his real acting ability in this film. There are no comic relief scenes; straight mystery/spy straight action. Great story of an orphaned man who finds out that there is a possibility that his "father" is a spy who wants to meet him (father is dying). He ask Jackie to perform a mission for him, that way he will know if he is his real son or not. Jackie agrees (even though it is a life & death situation). The last action scene ran a little long (that's why 4 stars instead of 5). Like I said, great story with great action.

Summary: Old Jackie, New Jackie and US Distributors
Review: Lets face it, Jackie's getting old. But it's cool. He has adjusted his style to include more drama and story as well as all the action he's famous for. This film shows how he uses all of these to make a great movie. This DVD also has a making-of extra (no subtitles though) as well as a few trailers for other Hong Kong movies. Of course I am referring to the IMPORT VERSION of this DVD.However, this site likes to list reviews of the import and Buena Vista versions together, so those of you reading this in relation to the Buena Vista release are getting the wrong idea. Buena Vista likes to re-edit Hong Kong films like "Armor of God", "Iron Monkey", "Supercop" (originally "Police Story 3: Supercop") and this one. They think (apparently) that they can make these movies better by cutting them up, changing the music, erasing all relation to other movie in the series, and dubbing them. I for one can't stand this, therefore I refuse to buy Buena Vista's piece-of-stuff version of "The Accidental Spy". I got this import version last year and am quite happy with it. I think that you would be, too. Also, what is up with the packaging? Who the heck is that blonde chick?! The two major female characters are Korean and Chinese! There were NO blondes in this movie (except maybe extras)! I mean it's not as if Chan's name in itself won't sell a movie. No there has to be some cute looing blonde on the box that isn't in the movie. Stupid American distributors.

Summary: Wow!!!!
Review: Really, I can't add much to what the other reviewers have said. This film IS Jackie Chan! Move over Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon - they don't even come close. It's really sad that Jackie is forced into a mould by the American market when his HK films are just so much better. This film is more serious than his other films to date (excluding Crime Story, Heart of Dragon & Thunderbolt which are all great dramas). The one hilarious scene is the "nude" fight scene in the bazaar - has to be seen to be believed! Jackie DOES manage to keep all the vital bits covered! This DVD is highly recommended for all JC (and non-JC!) fans, though the bonus "The Making of ..." is a bit disappointing - no English subtitles. Also, no Jackie music video included as I was hoping, having seen the music video CD. The end song sung over the end credits is by Jackie Cheung (still good though).

Summary: Good movie, butchered DVD
Review: The Accidental Spy is one of Jackies better recent movies. There's no disguising the fact he's getting older, and can't quite manage the jaw-dropping feats of his youth, but in this movie he still shows that he has more understanding of action scenes than almost anybody else on the planet. The Accidental Spy also has a reasonably good script. However, what you will see with this DVD is not really the movie The Accidental Spy at all. The distributing company have, for reasons best known to themselves, decided to cut about half an hour out of the movie for it's US release. They have also decided for us that we should watch the movie in English, despite it having been recorded in Jackie's native Cantonese. Dubbing ruins movies, pure and simple. Hence, whilst I believe that people should see The Accidental Spy if they are a fan of Jackie Chan or action cinema in general, I cannot recommend that anybody purchase this DVD version. Track down the Hong Kong DVD instead, which might not have Miramax level mastering, but at least presents the movie as it was meant to be seen. The butchery Miramax have applied to the movie is an offence to the movie makers and the US audiences in equal measures. Don't support releases like this, and maybe one day the US studios will learn to treat their audience with respect.

Summary: A plot? In a Jackie Chan Film?
Review: The Accidental Spy ventures into some uncharted waters for a Jackie Chan film. There is actually a story here folks and mystery to boot. Secondly, although this film has some funny bits, The Accidental Spy has a fairly somber mood throughout. Needless to say, this separates The Accidental Spy from 85% of Chan's work. But does it work? Well, it sort of works. The Accidental Spy borrows many plot twists and double crosses you would see coming from the likes of Le Carre, but the difference is that The Accidental Spy's story is not as well crafted and at times feels very forced. So while I do appreciate the shift in gears on the part of Jackie Chan, you can't help but wonder if a few more drafts were needed. The other main sticking point I have with the script isn't that you don't believe it, it's that you really don't care. The somber mood of the film kind of threw my off a bit since I'm used to seeing Jackie Chan smile pretty much all the way through a film. Again, I don't think it works, mostly because many of the actors, especially the cast of B and C movie actors assembled behind Chan don't have the depth to make it convincing. In addition, the comical segments are so much more interesting than the brooding bits. Finally, the stunts and fights, the cornerstone to any Jackie Chan film. I have to say it was another disappointment. The fights are surprisingly kept to a minimum in The Accidental Spy much to the dismay of fans. The fights that are present are more of the chase scene variety but are well coreoraphed and nicely filmed. As for the stunts, they're not as spectaular as some of the physical marvels Chan has pulled off in the past. So while I think it's nice to see Jackie Chan trying something new, it's really not what I go to a Jackie Chan film to see.

Review: There are two things you need to do before sitting down to watch this movie; walk over to you kitchen and make yourself a big bowl of popcorn, and then walk over to a closet, grab a hanger and suspend your disbelief for an hour and a half. Jackie Chan doesn't disappoint as 'the accidental spy', his charm, creativity, and unmatched skill make for a pleasant combination. However, the plot makes leaps and bounds across the realm of logic (this is where the popcorn comes in as a tasty from of distraction). The storyline is (predictably) a bit goofy, and a bit off, but Chan's physical artistry makes up for it all. This is not a spectacular film, it could have certainly used more of the funniness of the market chase scene in Istanbul (hilarious!) and less of the gunfire and blood, but it is entertaining nonetheless. Stangly enough, this movie is so much fun because of its two-dimensional nature. My major complaint is that the DVD doesn't have any extras or goodies; more outtakes from filming would have been great. The bloopers at the end are funnier than the movie itself. The dubbing is a bit dodgy, but I don't know if subtitles would have suited the pace of this movie any better.

Summary: Accidental Spy Review
Review: This film is in the genre of Who Am I but it is a touch more serious. It starts off poorly with no deeper explanation of the characters but after a while takes you deep into the action.
It is packed with his usual death defying stunts and great martial arts sequences and he is finding some decent looking women to star with him over these past few years.
All in all a very good action and mystery thriller.

Summary: Excellent and entertaining movie!
Review: This is a great movie of Jackie's. My wife and I both consider it to be amongst his top 5 and we have approximately 25 titles of his on DVD alone. The voice track is a mixture of cantonese and english thus necessitating use of subtitles. This is an excellent movie that is well-worth purchasing. Women will love one portion in particular.
