Summary: Masterful!
Review: I only have one small complaint with the Criterion DVD release: at times the subtitles flash too quickly when it's really not necessary to do so. I had to shuttle back several times to catch lines, which was a bit disruptive. Other than that, this is a great pic.

Summary: The Best Film I've Ever Seen
Review: See above. Direction, acting, story, cinematography, choreography -- all combine at a level of art that we're unlikely to see again. A masterwork.

Summary: One stunning image
Review: There is one stunning image in this perfect film that has remained with me all my life for its sheer poetry. It's where the samurai archer draws his bow at the approaching horde. It is my single favorite moment in the movies, just because it is so gorgeous. Such a glory of the human figure, and only one of many Kurosawa satori moments.

Summary: Everything a film should be.
Review: A breath-taking visual storm of moving images. No other picture draws the viewer so far inside the turbulence of the human condition and the high cost of freedom. Every moment of every scene was so meticulously engineered that I felt like a mute observer thrust inside a world more real than my own. The cinematography is brilliant and the characters emotional depth is carefully unwrapped as the movie progresses. At the conclusion of this three hour epic I found myself immediately back at the beginning, savouring the rich content a second time.

Summary: THE 1.33:1 ASPECT RATIO WAS HOW IT WAS INTENDED
Review: Some customers here, according to their reviews, suggest not buying the DVD because it is not in the widescreen format. According to Donald Richie's "The Films of Akira Kurosawa," the definitive analysis of his filmography (film by film), Kurosawa did not work with the widescreen format until 1958 with "Hidden Fortress". So "Samurai" is shown in its original format on Criterion's DVD. Hope that clears up the confusion.

Summary: A highly detailed movie of the life of the Samurai warrior.
Review: First off, I have seen this movie well over 10 times by now. It is a well drawn out movie. Every little detail has meaning. For each character is important...from the star to the background characters. It is a rather long movie, but is well worth it. Being in black & white, I think makes it more dramatic. The story was not made over night, Akira Kurosawa I think is one of the best directors to ever live. Remember that this very movie inspired George Lucas for "Star Wars". It is a well planned and thought out movie. Very dark and sad, with of course romance, comedy and alot of action. I suggest after you watch the movie, watch it again with the audio commentary...it explains alot of the movie and Akira himself. For any one who love the samurai warrior as myself, or who like realistic stories, no fake stuff like a super power hero who can never die and so on. But do not miss "The Seven Samurai"! It is the best movie made I think so far. And anything Akira does is always good. Also if you like this movie I truly think you will like Akira's "Ran" it too is a wonderful story of samurai. But be prepared to be depressed, it is by far the most dramatic and sad movie ever. Take my advice "The Seven Samrurai" & "Ran" are two of the greatest if nothing else a least rent them, but trust me if you buy them first...you will probaly not be disapointed!

Summary: Classic
Review: It's flawless. Everybody thinking that animes are the only movies made in Japan, should watch this film. People in my age group can't get past subtitles(Except for animes), can't stand black and white, and can't stand any film longer than 2 hours. This film may change their mind.
