Summary: Rip off of a classic western
Review: This movie seems to be a scene-by-scene copy of one of my favorite movies-"Magnificent Seven". Magnificent seven is a classic movie that has been copied many times, but I didn't know westerns were popular enough in japan to be copied. Not a bad copy but doesn't hold a candle to the original!

Summary: The greatest movie
Review: My personal favorite, Seven Samurai manages to be perhaps the most accessible of Kurosawa's works yet one of the deepest as well, a combination that one doesn't usually find in a world of film split up into the brainless entertainment or obscure art camps. Wonderful texture, amazing camerawork, incredible performances by some of Japan's best known actors - including one of the defining roles of Toshiro Mifune - make this an all around great film. Plus, in this Criterion edition, great in itself, you get a terrific and informative movie-long running commentary, some of which is taken from Kurosawa's autobiography. Very human film.

Summary: Boring? Not!
Review: 'Seven Samurai' does dare to weave character and plot into its extended running time, but that didn't stop my seven-year-old from getting completely wrapped up in the conflict, and while he now has plenty of online and video games when he wants pure action, he still gets excited watching 'SS' in its razor-sharp DVD version. He, at least, doesn't need computer graphics or color when there's a gripping, human story, wonderful performances, and bravura direction.

We're forced to conclude that Freddie's biggest fan in Seattle probably shouldn't confuse video games from real movies -- better to hang out at GameWorks than to risk disappointment at the mulitplex. BTW, Game Boy, the samurai code is from Japan, not mainland China, and the same applies to the movie and its director, the late visionary Akira Kurosawa.

Summary: To the person who gave it one star
Review: Furthermore, THEY WERE NOT CHINESE! THEY WERE JAPANESE! (THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!) Anyway, with that out of the way (and I certainly must say that anyone who did not grasp that has no right to give this fine film one star because it obviously means that he/she did not really watch it), here is my brief review. I had the pleasure of watching The Seven Samurai again last night, but for the first time on DVD. I have seen it on PBS, video, laserdisc. but this version from the fine folks at Criterion takes the cake...with my speakers hooked up, the sound was excellent. You hear all of the little details and during that climactic battle, the horses, rain, ad grunts surround you. It is for me one of Kurosawa's reigning achievements....each cut, each composition, each tracking shot..really brilliant stuff here. Also, it was, at the time, revolutionary and influenced the way many movies are shot nowadays. Commentary was also excellent...

Summary: I'M YAWNING ...
Review: If you're having trouble with insomnia, retn this one, Your troubles will be cured. I have the greatest patience with non-American movies that sets well out of the mainstream. But this 1956 production definitely is not the great movie the critics say it this. It's just a boring Japanese production, totally uninspired, slow paced. Ok, the famous fighting under the rain is a very well-shot sequence, but to reach that far one must be really determinated !

Summary: From foggy memories to full dvd picture
Review: i remember watching this movie about 10 years ago on PBS and have finally been able to get it on Criterion DVD. I am just waiting for the day that it shows up on my door! this is truly an amazing work that has been used as the base for many movies with the same plot (most recently the 13th Warrior w/ Antonio Banderas, which is actually a strong movie). Once again, thanks to AMAZON for being able to find this movie in high-end DVD format!

Summary: So much praise for an outdated movie ...
Review: This movie is really good, but it's not the masterpiece people keep talking about. The sound is awful, some parts are boring, the idea is not original. Of coruse Japanese movie at the fifties didn't have the resources the American movie industry already had in those days. It's worthwhile watching.

Summary: Great Action Epic
Review: This is simply one of the greatest films ever made and completely engulfing. Plus for those that don't know what they're talking about and prefer brain dead films this is a "Japanese" film about "a bunch of guys" saving a "Japanese" village.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Boring
Review: Lackluster HongKong export about a bunch of guys defending a Chinese village from bandits. I would prefer to watch "Wing Commander" rather than this trash. At least WC has some cool special effects and great action. I would give this sad excuse of a movie one star.
