Summary: "Sheng gang qi bing": The first HK heroic blooshed movie
Review: "Long Arm of the Law" has the distinction of being the first of the Hong Kong heroic bloodshed movies. This 1984 film, directed by Johnny Mak, was released two years before "A Better Tomorrow." I was interested in this film because I had heard of its highly critical portrayal of mainland China, but what will stay with me from this film is the sheer violence of the finale shootout. The story is relatively simple: A band of thieves from China enter Hong Kong illegally a form a triad gang known as "Big Circle." The gang plays to knock off a jewelry store, but their plan goes horribly wrong. Jing Chen plays "Rooster" in this his debut film. This film won Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Film Editing, Peter Cheung, and Best Supporting Actor, Wai Shum, who plays Tai. Not as refined as what came out of Hong Kong in the Nineties, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. There is something to be said for the rawness of this type of film. On the DVD version "Long Arm of the Law," which is in Cantonese and Mandarin with English subtitles, is letterboxed and includes the theatrical trailers.
