Summary: adahanghai Triad
Review: I dfisagree with the R rating. The story is as seen through the eyes of a 14 year old boy. This is one of Zhang Yimou's best films. And Gong Li is excellent as Xiao Jie {Bijou}. the English translation is inaccurate in a couple of places, but in general is acceptable.

Summary: Succeeds on many levels - a great movie!
Review: I happened to catch this movie one night while channel-surfing, and was immediately sucked in! This movie has it all: gangsters, a femme fatale, beautiful scenery, a great story, love, and death.

If you like good stories and characters, you will like this movie. The last twenty minutes or so will have you on the edge of your seat. Also, it has one of the best endings I've seen... not what I was expecting at all.

The only negative is that there aren't a whole lot of extras on the DVD. But it is a really great movie.

BUY IT!

Summary: Yea Gong Li!!
Review: I REALLY LOVED this movie. Gong Li was wonderful (as always), and the filming was perfect. You really understood what each of the characters was thinking. The ending tied the movie up beautifully, and, even though this is not the happiest of movies I was still smiling. It is an impressive piece with a wonderful cast. Definately a good buy!

Summary: Great
Review: I'm not much for the style of Chinese movies. Many of them are just overly dramatized to the point where it's somewhat funny. Nevertheless, I do check on IMDB for the highest rated ones and watch them in hopes of finding a gem. This one one of those gems.

Summary: A DVD zone GONG LI
Review: I'm not so sure that SHANGHAI TRIAD is Zhang Yimou's best movie, I personally prefer the drama HAPPY TIMES. But, what is certain, is that Gong Li gave in this movie one of her most luminous interpretations. The musical score and the singing acts of SHANGHAI TRIAD are a sufficient reason to keep the movie in one's library.

Beware, SHANGHAI TRIAD is not your regular action film. The scenes that would have been the highlight of an european or an american movie such as the attack of the Tang headquarter or the siege of the island where the boss of the Tang family have retired, are deliberately absent of the movie or just evoked by shadows.

So let's enjoy the always interesting descriptions of the Chinese psychology that reach their highest point in the last scenes of SHANGHAI TRIAD when the gang boss Tang rubs out for a while his eternal smile and condemns the traitors to an inhuman death. Absolutely chilling since the execution of the sentence, that concerns two of the main characters of the film, will not be shown to us.

Summary: One of my favorites
Review: I've seen this movie twice on the big screen and can't wait for its release on dvd so that I can own this flick. I just enjoyed it thoroughly...the plot, the scenery, the acting. Although set in the 1930's, the humanity demonstrated by two of the main characters is timeless and, for me, a source of optimism and inspiration in the crazy time we live in today. Others may think me insipid for that statement, but screw 'em.

Review: It was a total waste of my time and money to watch this film. Avoid, avoid , avoid. Maybe it is better in it's original language.

Summary: Something to Remember
Review: It's a special movie. It's a movie about acceptance and humanity. The character's seemed fully developed to me and the scenery was wonderful. I always love a movie because of it's beautiful visual effects as well as it's plot. I think that that is half of the movie, if you can describe the sights and sounds that the character feels as well as their thoughts and feelings. But it was a wonderful movie.SPOILER-- I loved how at the end the little boy ran to save Gong Li, even though he hated her and feared her at the beginning. There was something very noble and special about that.
