Rating: Summary: Both movie versions were all in all exceptional Review: As I was watching the DVD of Ringu I tried my best to not think back on The Ring since I watched the american version first. I partially suceeded and the two things that I couldn't help compare was the video tape curse and the appearence of Sadako and the appearence of Samara from the TVs. The American version of the curse itself was more visual chilling and made me more nervous and even a little frightened than the original curse itself. However, the original curse had the jarring memorable screeching metallic noise that reappears at a tense scene of precognition (ex. The scene where Reiko picks up the phone and the scene as Ryuji is dying where she realizes that something is not right). With the famous coming out of the TV death sequences, Samara was visual stunning and frightening, her unnatural animated movements freaked me out when I first saw it...but it was animated, no real talent other than the computer graphic effect artist talen was placed in this sequence. In Ringu, we have not only the crawl, the walk, the hair hiding the face all done by one person with no special effects (except for crawling out of the TV) done by the actress herself...we have the eye. With that said, now unto the review. The movie was entertaining and psycholigically creepy. More straightforward with little plot twists than the American version, it carries itself quietly. While there was not much background music, the sounds and music it has was chilling, especially it certain scenes. The movie gave an explanation while not revealing too much, leaving and satisfying answer with an air of mystery (ringu explains why Yoichi, Reiko's son has pyschic powers thanks to his father). It was everything I expected it to be. I wasn't looking for the special effects or strong backstory that the American version had (keep in mind that Ringu did not have as big of a budget as The Ring), what I was looking for a quiet chill and dignified thrill that The Ring did not have, and I found it when I watched my favorite scene, the TV death scene. While I admit, in my opinion, The Ring scared me and affected more than Ringu (it's a lot more frightening to have a demonic evil CHILD than an older girl and a lot more traumatizing to have a mother, not a father, kill her own child), Ringu was no disappoinment...I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Very scary! Review: Although the American remake was a little eerier, the original is still great. Based on the novel of the same name, the ghost of a powerful esper haunts all those who see her cryptic videotape and vows to kill them within seven days. Hoping to break the curse, a nosy reporter soon puts her whole family in jeopardy after her ex-husband and her son also are exposed to it. They have to find away to save themselves before the week is up, although just laying the ghost to rest might not stop the curse! RINGU will leave you with a sense of forboding doom, and you'll never leave the lights on when you go to bed again!
Rating: Summary: Very bad movie Review: I give this movie only 1 star for effort or else it would have gotten 1/2 star. This movie does not attempt to be scary, it's extremely boring, and LACKS special effects--a supernatural movie DOES need special effects, crime dramas don't. I've read the reviews on this site about this movie being better than the American version...no way. The cultural differences make it difficult to have empathy for the characters. Is it a rentable movie??? It's your call, but I would not suggest it.
Rating: Summary: [aweful] Review: Not scary at all. The American Version is SO MUCH SCARIER THAN THIS LAUGH FEST! Completely boring. I'm glad they remade it. It's much better as a remake than this crud.
Rating: Summary: This version was not as scary, but better overall. Review: Like the American version, the Japanese version of "The Ring" has realistic makeup and special effects. The basic plot is relatively the same, with some minor changes here and there. I found this version to be not nearly as frightening as the American version, but I liked it better because of the differences in plot. It's a good investment for someone who has already seen the American version and would like to make a comparison for themselves.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as America's, but still creepy Review: Ringu was nothing like I expected. I have seen The Ring many times before, and I saw it before Ringu. I'd heard how Ringu was supposed to be a lot scarier than The Ring. I was quite dissapointed when I watched it - my friend and I kept dozing off, it was getting so boring! To us it looked like a cheap remake compared to The Ring. It's a good movie, but definately not as good as The Ring.
Rating: Summary: Scary Movie!!!!! Review: I think this movie is the most scary movie I have ever seen. If you watch this this movie you probally wont go to sleep for 7 days. If I rated it on a scale 1-10 of scary movies I would give a 10.5
Rating: Summary: Ringu... a good example Review: Ringu is a good example to use for any argument on why the US shouldn't remake foreign movies. After watching Ringu, I was left wondering why they didn't play this movie in American theaters as compared to the numerous theaters that The Ring was played in. Big budget and CGI effects are all well and good... but even though The Ring was scary... Ringu was much more so!
Rating: Summary: A disgrace to japanese cinema Review: I bought a bootleg copy of this film a long time ago before it was available here because people said it was the scariest movie ever made. I love Japanese movies so I thought it would be great. But it doesn't have the same flavor as other Japanese movies. Actually, it seems more like a [bad] american movie. No wonder why hollywood remade it. The US version is better in a way. The ending is better in Ringu, but the rest of the movie is better in the remake. But to tell you the truth they are both pretty [terrible]. I just don't find an evil video tape scary. Sorry. If you want to get good Japanese films, get Battle Royale, Ichi the Killer, Tetsuo: the Iron Man, Tokyo Fist, Visitor Q, Wild Zero, STacy, and Junk.
Rating: Summary: Will really chill you down to the spine Review: Hi. This movie was pretty good. It was much scarier than The Ring. This movie is very creepy and eerie and I would recommend it to anyone who would like a good scare. This is one of my favorite films. It has eerie music and is oodles of fun. P.S. Vertandi, they did not make a mistake. That's how they pronounce it. That's how their alphabet goes. For example, the "ga" section of the Japanese alaphabet goes like this:ga, gi gu ge go. Just a fact.
