Review: I was moved by the developing relationship of a spoiled, young boy temporarily left in the care of his mute grandmother out in the rural countryside while his mother goes back to look for a job. It left me in tears - it's a must see if you like artsy foreign films. So simple yet so moving..

Review: I'm a proud "redneck" from South Carolina, who has never seen a foreign film before.
I got forced into seeing this one, and doggoneit, I slowly realized how much I'd be forcing myself to not bawl out crying in front of everyone.
This movie has affected me more than anything i've ever seen. I wanted to clothesline that little kid so bad at points in the movie. But the ending, I couldn't take it, and everyone had to give me a hug because I was crying so bad.
Afterward, I saw an oriental person at the Walmart and I went up and hugged him.

Summary: A film charged with humanity
Review: If there's something I feel missing from much of today's mainstream film output is the focus on the issues of humanity, love and respect to each other - instead we get Hollywood's infatuation with special effects, glitz and plots that are shallower than any of MTV's sitcoms. Independent films, as usual, come to the rescue, and this one is a true discovered gem in its own right. Few times has a film ever made me get down to sincere, moving tears, and this one did.
You truly wish you could help poor Grandma (who can't say a word, yet she communicates without any need for them) who has to withstand the obstinate behavior of his city-spoiled grandson. And sometimes you wish you could give that boy a good smack! However, as the film unveils, little boy Sang-Woo starts learning what her true intentions are and the meaning of love, within his 7-year old logic. All of this happening at an unhurried, natural pace throughout the film (although some scenes near the end would have had potential for further development and a more solid ending).
In short, if you are of the type with an appreciation for the universal feelings of love, respect and human relationships (something our society seems to be lacking), this film will move you. This is the kind of film who makes you wish to get extras on the DVD to know more about those involved with it - but the version I watched unfortunately doesn't have any. But even without any extra features this film, if only for its quality of storytelling, photography and emotional charge, is a worthwile addition to your collection.

Summary: A Warm-Hearted Gem
Review: If you need a respite from all the frenetic, over-acted Hollywood films of late, watch this film. The woman who plays the mute grandmother and the boy are not actors, but real people, and the performance that the director draws out from them is natural and affecting. The premise and the story is simple: A boy who was raised in an urban, westernized city has to spend a week with his grandmother in the country. The pace that the director generates from this simple premise, and the scenes that he builds the movie with are delightful and funny. And the climax of the movie, which is as gentle and inevitable as life itself, will not fail to draw tears from you. This wonderful and understated film will make you think of the importance of your loved ones, and the world can use more films like this.

Summary: A beautiful film, but somewhat lacking for me
Review: In the end, i enjoyed this film. However, i didn't enjoy it at all until the last ten minutes or so when the story finally came together. The child who is really the main character of the piece was just so irritating. His grandmother did EVERYTHING for him, and more, and only in the very last ten/fifteen minutes or so did he turn into a sweet boy who loved her. This really is a high quality film, except it felt very rushed towards the end. The story could have slowly unfolded into the child's gradual appreciation of his Grandmother, but instead it was quite sudden, and seemed like it was tied up in a quick little package, as if the viewer wouldn't be able to sit through a minute more. It's quite a good film with some very sweet parts (especially the end!), but if they added another 20 minutes or so to let the story unfold, i would have enjoyed it alot more. I'd suggest renting this before you buy it, if you haven't seen it before.

Summary: Wonderful and Heartwarming
Review: My family is currently living in South Korea. Recently I was able to attend two films the Army had for a Korean Film Fest. I was so lucky to get to see this wonderful film with English subtitles at Camp Humphreys USArmy post theater. I was one of only half dozen who showed up to see this film!! It was our gain and everyone else who didnt show up lost out big-time!! This is a gem of a movie, certainly to become a classic. I would love to meet the grandmother in this film. She is one of the best I have ever seen, her acting is a study in how to be a actor and not get caught in the act! I want to own this movie and show it to all my family and friends back in the USA. This is the Korea I see around me every day, the Korea I have come to love.

Summary: A Fantastic Example of Love and Patience
Review: Sang-Woo has been left in the care of his grandmother (whom he barely knows) by his mother who goes in search of work after losing her business. The grandmother lives in a remote rural area in Korea, and her living conditions (outdoor toilet, no television, and bugs) are shocking to this seven year-old spoiled kid who is use to Nintendo games and fast food. So, it should come as no surprise when Sang-Woo begins to act out his frustation by being disrespectful to his grandmother. What is touching, however, is the patience and love this mute woman shows to her grandson inspite of the horrible way he treats her. There are two scenes in this movie which had me laughing and crying. The first is when Sang-Woo asks his grandmother to walk miles into town to get him some "Kentucky Fried" (chicken) for lunch. I was rolling on the floor when grandmother came back with her idea of this fast food delicacy. The other scene is when grandmother gives Sang-Woo a wrapped gift. He scoffs at it and puts it in his back pocket. Later, he opens it and discovers how much his grandmother truly loves him. After seeing this scene, I knew I had to share this movie with my mother and sisters. Rural life has been hard on this woman and her looks show it. But the unconditional love she has for her grandson makes her the most beautiful woman in the world. It takes Sang-Woo a while to learn this, but he does.........and you will, too. You will be so glad you bought this movie, and so much richer for it.
