Summary: one of the best movie I have ever seen from Asia
Review: Great movie

Summary: One of my absolute favorites of all time!
Review: I ADORE this movie. It has wit, it has style, and the director Ang Lee has this uncanny understanding of human nature which he transfers effortlessly to film. You may remember Ang Lee as the director of Sense & Sensibility (completed after Eat, Drink..) I absolutely LOVE this film! I especially liked the performances of Sihung Lung and Wu Chien-lien. It is funny, touching, with the themes of food, sex, human frailties, love, and family bonds. You will love this movie! Purchase it today! =)

Summary: Wonderful picture of father daughter relationships!
Review: This movie works at several levels. The movie is beautiful, the characters are well defined and interact honestly. The mind-body parts of life are well played out in the varying relationships of grown girls with their daughters! A real treat, even with the subtitles.

Summary: A classic film about love, family and food.
Review: "Eat Drink Man Woman" is one of my most-favorite movies. I've seen it three times, and I don't see many movies more than once. The characters are all fairly well-developed, their stories are compelling and realistic, and the cooking scenes are incredible. I felt the ending was not predictable; rather, most surprising and very heart-warming. I would definitely watch it again. A great date movie! ;)

Summary: Great movie
Review: This was my first "Ang Lee" movie and I am impressed. I like foreign movies because most of them do not follow the Hollywood standard of relying heavily on famous movie stars to make cash for the studios at the sacrifice of a good plot, skillful acting, and good storytelling.

This movie is a slice of Tawainese life. Master Chu is a renowned chef and a widower who raised three beautiful daughters. The movie observes the lives of the members of this family and the poeple around them. The storytelling is simple and sweet. Ang Lee has us observing the character's lives as forces around them change the circumstances they find each other in. The film is engrossing and satisfying as we watch the conflict of tradition and modernization affect Master Chu and his loved ones. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it ten times more if I spoke chinese, but the subtitles are better than dubbed. Never watch a dubbed foreign movie. The language will be lost.

I made the mistake of watching this movie with an empty stomach. Never do that. The cooking scenes are fantastic. The food Master Chu prepares are a feast for the eyes, and an empty stomach would only make you yearn for a taste.

Summary: A DELICIOUS SERVING OF LIFE, LOVE AND LAUGHS
Review: Apart from a fabulous peep into the Chinese culinary worlds and its delectable blend of touching yet hilarious screenplay (a natural, unfolding rhythm), this movie for me represents Ang Lee's peak.

A bit like a Chinese version of Woody Allen's "Hannah and her sisters", the film traverses through the lives of three sisters and their father. Lee manages to tell each character's story with care and humor. There are some hearty laughs, a number of touching dramatic moments, and towards the end even a couple of startling twists.

There are a handful of movies that employ cooking as a metaphor of life. But Lee doesn't stop there -- he uses the *preparation* of food as a motif of life's experience as a whole, to include friendship and familial devotion, as well as desire, passion and love. On occasion, food also represents a substitute to all that.

Ultimately, what makes a movie like this work is how much you care for its characters, each one wholesomely well-drawn and glibly multi-dimensional. With the possible exception of a family friend, who comes across as a bit cartooney, there are no caricature villains. Everyone is complex and human.

A terrific offering from China that I highly recommend. You may leave with a craving for some noodles soon after..

Summary: Loved the cooking
Review: This movie has the same story and is the basis for the film "Tortilla Soup." If you want to see the more accesible and entertaining of the two, see "Tortilla Soup" in which the Chinese culture is swapped for Hispanic-American culture. The culture differences and dry sense of humor in "Eat Drink Man Woman" kept me from identifying with the characters. It was still a wonderful movie and is worth watching for the cooking sequences alone. It was also interesting as a Chinese cultural study.

Summary: Delicious film!
Review: This is one of the best food films I have ever seen. Not only do the scenes featuring food preparation make your mouth water (do not see this movie on an empty stomach!), but, the acting is warm and believable, and the story is engaging, entertaining and thought provoking.

An elderly Taiwanese chef with three grown daughters has lost his ability to taste, following the death of his wife. This is particulary unfortunate because the one way he is still able to connect with his children is every Sunday, when he prepares colorful and extravegant family style meals with great pots of soup, dumplings, duck, and sauces. Unfortunately, with his lack of tastebuds, the flavors in his food are also beginning to suffer. This film also examines his daughter's struggle with self identity as they balance the tensions of tradition and the fast approaching modern lifestyle they face before them.

This film is appealing to those who cook, those who enjoy eating and anyone who likes good films with intelligent character development that examine human relationships. This is a film that truly speaks the universal language of family.

Summary: A celebration of excellence in an imperfect world ..
Review: This wonderfull, exquisite and delicous DVD excells on many fronts. First.. it's one of the first food movies where the food plays a central part of the film ... Second it's a super family story of the widdowed chef at one of China's largest and sumptous meets every Sunday to prepare the family dinner with his three young and beautifull daughters Third It's a story of tradgedy, stife and conflict as the one daughter least expected to shows up pregnant. Fourth ..the director Ang Lee is probably one of the best in the industry hands down ....

I would sing more praises of this film and Ang Lee's work but I think you get the picture ....

Summary: Excellent movie and it is NOT a remake.
Review: I would like to clarify that "Eat Drink Man Woman"(1994) is not a remake of "Tortilla Soup"(2001). It's actually the other way around.

I LOVE this movie. It's amazing because it touched me with it's honesty. This is one of my favorite kinds of movie where the director does not underestimate the audience and takes the time to tell his story with subtlety, reactions/expressions and wit. All the actors/actresses were outstanding especially Chef Wu and his middle daughter. This is a great way to take a peek into the modern Chinese family where the old generation traditions are clashing with the modern westernized ways. The direction was graceful and showed unexpected aspects of this conflict. The characters were multi-layered and totaly real.

I did not find this film slow moving or boring at all as one reviewer said. The editing was great and the cinematography was stylish. I actually want to watch this movie again which is rare for me. I can't say enough good things about this movie. Watch this if you were ever a child who clashed with your parents.
Highly Recommended.
