Summary: The Best Movie Ever
Review: I give this movie one star because I know that most people only look at the negative reviews of a movie(myself included)and do not look at the good reviews. I must point out that many people seem bent on dwelling on the fact that many Americans died durring the Pacific conflict and a movie about Japanese children is just trying to make us forget about what the Japanese did durring the war. As one other reviewer pointed out, more Americans died in the war with Japan then died in the European conflict. To dispute this, 650,000 white people died in the Civil War(that does not include Black and Native Americans who died). More people died in the Civil War than all other US. conflicts combined. (Includes Vietnam, Korea, WWI, WWII, IraqI, IraqII and whatever we were doing in the 80's). I do not want to put down those who bravely fought for our country, but if you watch this film you will hear no mention of Americans (or USA), we are just called the Enemy, nothing more. So if you want a wonderfuly powerful film about the sadness of children then this is your film. It makes you feel things you thought you could never feel and makes you wonder why we fight wars in which children get hurt. Do not watch this film for me, watch this film for them!

Summary: Powerful
Review: Grave of the Fireflies is great. It's very sad, it makes me cry everytime I see it. It's about 2 children whose mom dies during WWII (the bomb). Their dad is fighting in the war so they have to live with their aunt who thinks Seita should go fight. The story works out from there. I think everyone should see it. It's one of the movies that might help you think in a different perspection.

Summary: Watch this with tissues
Review: I remember watching this in grade one and crying my little eyes out. There probably isn't an anime more psychologically damaging to a 7-year old than this trauma-drama, since it depicted the brutality and horror of world war II in Japan. Being extremely and painfully realistic, it's very very tear-jerking and disturbing. The animation is top-notch. I watched it again more than 5 years ago, and I don't think I'm ready to watch it again any time soon. It's a movie you need some mental preparation beforehand to watch, but that said, it is a classic.

Summary: Heart Wrenching
Review: I got this movie last night and sacrificed sleep to watch it,and let me tell you it was worth it. The love and care shown by Seita for Setsuko is quite touching, towards the end the simple line "she never woke up" ,well lets say it still sends chills down my spine when i think about it.Afew tears fell down my face as he looked at his sister one last time.Watch it.

Summary: Wow! What an experience!
Review: Just placing my rating. You already know the story line by now. This was a wonderful experience for me. As for people who like to argue over the review ratings given, that's not the point. We are here to inform and to help others make choices about these movies, books, etc. If my review compels you to watch this movie -- fine. If you disagree with my review -- fine. But these wonderful characters have become embedded in my memory and I can't wait to watch it again. For a wonderful review, please also read the one posted by "professional shizoku". His summary is a lovely one to read prior to watching this film and makes me want to go back and re-watch it more closely next time. Thanks.

Summary: FINALLY available in Australia!
Review: Unfortunately most Studio Ghibli films, prior to the DVD release of Spirited Away, are scarcely available in Australia. Sometimes you can get imported copies of My neighbour Totoro and The Castle Of Cagliostro in special outlets but you need a multi-region DVD player to watch them. I'm a big fan of Miyuzaki and the Studio Ghibli films and I can honestly say that Grave Of The Fireflies is one of the most touching anime films I've ever seen. I saw a Japanese edition DVD and my friend's place a number of weeks ago and it left a feeling of profound despair and unease. The same sort of way Princess Mononoke makes you feel guilty for how mankind destroys the Earth, and Spirited Away makes you miss the innocence and curiousity of childhood. It's one of those sort of war stories which, at the end of it all, speaks more about how war affects the innocent and uninvolved without being overly prejudiced or political. I am very glad that this film is now available in regular stores in Australia and I'm hoping that more Studio Ghibli titles will follow.

Summary: Agony
Review: There is little to do with the Enemy in this movie... It doesn't tell us to hate the American, or to pity the noble Japanese. The enemy was greed, war, disease, and apathy... so many children suffered in this long, terrible war, we can't ever atone for it. This movie is not some sword-wielding, prophecy-fulfilling anime, it is of agony, love, trust, family, and sorrow so deep that one cannot express it.

I don't know about you, but this film crushed me, I couldn't stop crying for hours.... It let me never want to see war again.

Summary: Such a sad movie.
Review: Grave of the Fireflies, I believe, is one of the best anime movies to find. The characters, Seita and Setsuko can be related to our everyday lives. I'm shocked that people had dismissed this movie! Anyway, this movie is very sad. Don't be so critical of this movie, because all movies have flaws. Look at the good things, and in Grave of the Fireflies' case, that's alot of things. I reccomend this to everyone who can find it! But have tissues on hand. Just in case.
