Summary: I am getting so sick of this!
Review: I am a Chinese-American, and I am getting very sick of a few things. First, why does every chinese language film get compared to Crouching Tiger these days? Just because the damn film is from China doesn't make it some kind of contender for Crouching Tiger. In The Mood For Love is a flim noir romance, Crouching Tiger was an action movie with a romantic atmosphere, and didn't even do well in China (hey, more martial arts and actors speaking bad Mandarin isn't exactly a perfect formula for success in China). Second, these damn jaded critics and French Canne people see one freakin Chinese movie a year and act like it's the holy grail or something. Third, Wong Kar Wai is overated. His movies are difficult, boring, and oh yeah, boring. Just because they have great cinematography doesn't mean it's a great movie. He's already hurt the popularity of the two actors he works with most, the great Tony Leung and beautiful Maggie Cheung. Look, watch something directed by Johhnie To or Jingle Ma or starring guys like Andy Lau, Ekin Cheng, or even Tony Leung (his latest "fun" movies are Fighting For Love and Tokyo Raiders) and have a good time. Not all of us are diluted critics who have nothing better to do than praise difficult movies. I'm not saying that the actors weren't great and that this movie doesn't have great things going for it, it's just another overrated movie that will bore you to death (especially if you're Chinese).

Summary: Beauty and eroticism
Review: This is without doubt one of the sexiest, beautiful, and most erotic films I have ever seen, and yet there is not a single sex scene in the movie. There aren't enough superlatives in my vocabulary to begin to describe it for it is nothing short of perfection in every department from acting, to cinematography, to writing this movie left me longing for more. Hope the transfer to DVD does it justice.

Summary: A Challenging Film That Demands More Viewings
Review: I saw this film at New York's FIlm Forum and thought it was fascinating, having only seen Chungking Express and Fallen Angels, I had a cursory pre-conceived notion of what this film might be about. My expectations were defied and I left the film feeling perplexed and unsure of how to feel about this film. Cinematically it's the most stunning work I've seen Wong Kar-wai create, the camera work, the color schemes, the acting and the haunting use of music certainly demonstrate that he's working at height of his powers.

It was only after listening to Wong's commentary on his entry in the BMWFilms short film showcase that I began to get a better understanding of what was being said in In The Move For Love, but at that point it was out of theatres and only available as French import (which is a great special edition set, perhaps surprassing this release in regards to extras). Now that Criterion is release this film, it can be viewed (repeatedly) and the affect of the film can truly be appreciated.

Summary: yawn!
Review: I can't understand all the hype. This movie was quite booring. As I left the theater another man and I looked at each other and said "what was that?" I'll give it 5 stars for beautiful shots, but the unrequited love thing didn't appeal to me and it went nowhere. Don't bother unless you can see it for free. And then maybe do it on an empty stomach so you will fall asleep.

Summary: I'm in the mood for another great Won-Kar Wai movie!!!!!
Review: This movie is so great! There is an odd tension that builds. Quiet, beautiful and mesmerizing. The score is perfect! The color even looks like a late 50s early 60s movie. It's sort of old technicolor. Maggie Cheung is gorgeous. The chemistry of the film invloves you so deeply, you don't notice the time spent watching it. I don't have the Criterion DVD yet (it's not out), but believe me I will.

Summary: Criterion Edition DVD Set Just What Fans Need
Review: As a huge, long-time fan of Wong Kar-Wai, I was very excited to hear about his latest effort, In the Mood for Love being released theatrically in the US. I had ordered the Chinese DVD in late 2000, and after viewing it was sure that once critics saw the film, the auteur would finally receive his comeuppance. Unfortunately, another "Asian" film (which was funded by US sources) came out in 2000 - a much bigger, more accesible film - that blew the competition away.

As they did with Lars Von Trier's The Idiots, USA Films has relegated In the Mood for Love away to the back shelves, preferring to spend more time on DVD special ediions of tripe like One Night at McCool's. If you were lucky, you lived in one of the few cities that In the Mood for Love played at in its theatrical run. If you are less lucky, your video store has rented to you a pan and scan VHS copy.

But gripes are no longer necessary as the wonderful Criterion has decided to release a spectacular 2-disc DVD set of ITMFL in late February. Supposedly a port of the Region 2 French Special Edition, the set includes hours of bonus material, including a half-hour of very interesting deleted scenes, complete with the director's commentary - a first.

I currently own three version of the film (Chinese VCD, Chinese DVD, and French Region 2 2-disc SE), and could not feel more obliged at the prospect of purchasing a (pricey) fourth. If you thought that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was what Asian film is all about, you are sorely mistaken. Pre-order Wong Kar-Wai's masterpiece In the Mood for Love to begin educating yourself on the beauty of cinema.

Summary: For me - the most enchanting movie for 2001
Review: I went to see this film after getting my heart broke. This delicate, enchanting, subtle movie, in which every slight move has meaning, did not remind me of how miserable I felt. Instead, it reminded me the value of love and replanted hope in my mind.

Summary: In the Mood sets the perfect mood.
Review: This is a masterpiece of movie-making art! The combination of superb acting, enchanting music and expressive cinematography makes In the Mood For Love one of the best movies of the last ten years. Maggie Cheung and Tony Leong give excellent performances as neighbors who must struggle with feelings of adulterous love while "keeping up appearances". Maggie and Tony dance around their love to songs (sung in spanish) by Nat "King" Cole and to a haunting score. Kar-Wai Wong and cinematographer Christopher Doyle paints the perfect picture of 1960s Hong Kong, with dank, drab surroundings in contrast to the colorful, gorgeous cheongsams that Maggie wears beautifully. I fell in love with Maggie, wished I were Tony and throughly immersed myself In the Mood For Love!
