Summary: Sweet and Tender fable
Review: The story of a mentally challenged young man, living near Venice beach. its a sort of Village idiot coming of age story, except that johnny is 30 not 15 years old. Johnny lives with his mother, who is terminally ill, when she finally has to check herself into hospital, she arranges for Amy Joe a young student to care for Johnny. Johnny falls in love and tries to become a real man to win her affection, but he is alas, just a boy in a mans' body.... This is a real Gem, according to the box it won the Hungarian Academy Award for "Best Picture", I doubt it would have got that far in the USA, simply because it is such an intimate little film, but I can understand how in Europe this kind of Cinema is still celebrated. Jon Jacobs is charming and gives a real touching performance with subtle touches of humor. Dawn Kapatos plays Amy joe with just the right balance of sweetness and Spitefulness. I highly Recommend it!
