Summary: Excellent portrayal of a young woman who becomes a queen
Review: This motion picture is first-rate at every level. It gives one a glimpse of what Elizabeth's early live must have been like with a half-sister who wants to behead her through a lover who betrays her. This movie lost by a photo finish to Shakespeare in Love for the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year. It will not disappoint history buffs and works as a drama that makes history live. This film is one of the best portrayals of Elizabeth put on film. I recommend it without qualification.

Summary: Extraordinary!!!
Review: People who didn't like this film are simply "Shakespeare in Love" fans. As if there were a competition of some kind. The fact of the matter is that "Elizabeth" is an extraordinary film. I didn't know that a period film could be beautiful, mesmerizing, clever, innovative, striking, appealing, and above all, entertaining as "Elizabeth" is. The director of this film did a marvelous job--a brilliant story told in a visually stunning way. But the maddest props go out to the cast...particularly Cate Blanchett in the title role. She is spectacular as Elizabeth! Talk about Oscar Schmoscar! The Oscar SHOULD'VE gone to Cate, and not to Gwyneth's joke of a performance. It's good to know that Cate won many film critics awards--that proves which performance was clearly the year's best.

Summary: The best movie of 1998!
Review: Rich in detail and performance, Elizabeth was a captivating and controversial drama at its release. Delves expertly into the mind and heart of England's most beloved Queen. Blanchett shines as the young Elizabeth, struggling with an uncertain throne and an uncertain heart. It was the love story of Elizabeth and Lord Robert (Jospeh Fiennes) that made the story for me. A must have for any serious movie collector!

Summary: The best film of the year
Review: Cate Blanchette delivered an incredible performance as Elizabeth. The movie was very accurate and the costumes were beautiful. This is a must see!

Summary: The best film I have seen in years.
Review: Nearly every frame is like a painting. Blanchett is like a god, every gesture bringing grace and beauty to a Tudor monarch, but with the youthful flesh and blood of a woman, too. Here is a likely young Elizabeth I. Rush (Walsingham) as a loyal and deadly snake is unforgettable. And Joe F. (Dudley) is superior to his love in Shakespeare. Nearly a perfect film.

Summary: A wonderful mix of english subtlety and cinematic suspense.
Review: Shekhar Kapur has made a cinematic masterpiece in "Elizabeth." With a stellar international cast, amazing cinematography, and a richly dark atmosphere straight out of a David Fincher film, "Elizabeth" is sure to keep viewers stuck to their couches until the very last second. Cate Blanchett is wonderful and Geoffrey Rush, as her master of spies, practically steals the show. It is a must watch. Watch for Shekhar Kapur's name to go to the top of the movie-maker list very soon.

Summary: I thought that Cate Blanchett was sensational as Elizabeth!
Review: I found the film to be consistent and wonderfully written. I agree that there are some historical discrepancies in the film, but one is so caught up in the emotion of the film, that it is hard to differentiate fact from fiction. If one compares this film to an opera by Donizetti, author of "Anna Bolena", this film had some really fine historical qualities. These historical events may not have occurred exactly as portrayed in the film, but these discrepancies only serve as an enhancement to the entertainment value of the film itself. I felt the film was of the highest caliber and would certainly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Elizabethan era.

Summary: Wonderful Depiction of an amazing woman
Review: Cate Blanchett is incredible as the "virgin" queen. The costumes are amazing, and the acting is superb. A portrayal of Elizabeth 1 that shows her vunerable side, as well as her determination. Excellent historical drama!

Summary: 4 stars for Cate Blanchard alone
Review: While I was not particularly pleased by the script as a whole, Cate Blanchard's acting is a sight to see. She can really put it out there! I wish the script had focused more on her and Geoffery Rush's characters' relationship; they had the best chemistry of the entire movie. The other acting was very routine in comparison to these two. The sets and costumes were terrific, as was the cinematography. However, the script needed a lot work on the characters' emotional and cognitive transitions; decisions were made that didn't seem to fit the context of the story. The DVD transfer was good, as were the extras that were included in the package (good, but not great). A good rental.
