Summary: Easy on the sugar, lady!!
Review: having attended a state high school on the west coast of scotland in the 80's i can categorically state that this film captures exactly the mood of the west-coast scottish schoolboy of the time. Forsythe uses Jacques Tati type humour to put his vision across. And what a vision it is-- hormones, confusion and utterly gorgeous midsummer Scottish sunshine and blonde haired girls. C'mon, there's a world out there, and it's our's 'cause we're young and immortal. Watching the country park scenes now as a 31 year old I realise that being young was stoopid but great. This film is the only truly scotch classic. Forget those Edinburgh trainspotting depressive drug users, the drug is life and Glasgow is the best city in the world, like new york but without the commuting time.

Summary: Wow - I thought it was just us
Review: I am thrilled to see so many heartfelt reviews from Americans of a film that I always thought was far removed from the quintessentially British fare that's usually enjoyed in the States. I guess pure magic travels well. This is my favourite film of all time. As kids, me and my two sisters used to watch it every week, reciting the script, word-for-word. One of the worst moments in my childhood was the day that my mother taped over the video by mistake! She was never forgiven.I'm a big grown-up girl now, but the minute I hear that jangly eighties guitar theme, I get goose bumps and come over all emotional. This really is the most charming, funny, warm-hearted, beautifully cast and fantastically filmed film to come out of our island. Ever. It makes me want to be sixteen. It makes me want to be Scottish. It makes me want to have an awful haircut and wear an ill-fitting school uniform. And it still makes me want to go out with John Gordon Sinclair ...

Summary: An adorable movie
Review: I could sit and watch this movie over and over. It's sweet, funny, heartwarming ... nearly perfect. Hapless Gregory on his quest for love embodies the awkwardness of an adolescent crush in such a way that you can't help but adore him. This movie is quirky and fun, you'll definitely enjoy it if you're looking for a lighthearted romance - and yet it's not a chick-flick, all you tough guys will get a good chuckle from this one as well.

Summary: Outstanding Movie about Teen Awkwardness
Review: I first saw this movie about 18 years ago, when I was approximately the age of Gregory in the film. At that time in my life, I felt very much like Gregory and closely related to his predicaments. As such, I never missed this film when it aired on cable and subsequently acquired it on VHS. I now thank MGM for bring it to DVD. This movie still holds the same charm and appeal for me as it did when I was 16, as it really takes me back to another time. I highly recommend this movie and believe that others will find it wonderful as well. It is one of my most favorite films of all time. The thick Scottish accents may be a little hard to comprehend for American audiences, however this film requires subsequent viewings anyway in order to catch all the activity going on in the peripheries.

Review: I grew up in the town where this movie was shot. My girlfriend even went to the same school as Gregory and Dorothy. So I love watching this movie for the memories it brings back!

Summary: All-time favorite movie!
Review: I own a copy of almost all of Bill Forsyth's movies (except for "That Sinking Feeling," which I guess doesn't exist in the U.S.!). I saw this movie during my freshman year of high school in the early 1980s, and at the time thought, "Yes, that's how it is all around the world, isn't it!" For me, it's now a once-a-year must-see...and each time I see it, I get taken back to that special place called "innocence," if only for a little while. My favorite quote? "Don't touch the ravioli, it's garbage!" Mr. Menzies: "Ravioli, please." I must agree completely with "Alternity from Texas"...when is this movie gonna be on DVD? I will even buy a DVD player the day it goes to that format!!!!!!!!

Summary: A Twist In The Tale
Review: I remember this Movie from when I was sixteen years old, so I associate it with a coming of age, Which is essentially what this movie is about. Much in the same way as John Hughes set the standard in 80s America , Forsyth set the standard in the late 70s and early 80s in the UK , albiet on a smaller scale.
Gregory on a voyage of self discovery finds that his destiny isnt necessarily in his own hands and also that everything happens for a reason. There is a certain amount of sentimentality associated with this movie but this isnt a criticism, In fact it lends a certain charm to this story.
An understated role by a certain CP Grogan establishes a credible ending to this movie and one that a lot of school girls of her age will identify with. This is one of the reasons this movie has endured the ravages of time. Enough to inspire a sequel "Gregory's Two Girls" which has unfortunately neither the charm or credibility or simplicity that the original of some 20 years earlier has.
I strongly encourage you to play this movie with the original scottish soundtrack as to not do so would detract from the film in its original glory.
Also Claire Grogan is not only a member of new wave band "Altered Images" but also a star of Red Dwarf, a rather popular Britcom. Nowadays she can be seen presenting on MTV Europe as well as doing the odd 80s revival tour.

Summary: Did I miss something?
Review: I rented this DVD. It took me three nights to watch it because I kept falling asleep. After finally getting through the movie, I thought I'd check Amazon to see what the reviews were like. I'm very surprised they are all so positive. I thought the movie was slow and silly. I usually like "coming of age" type movies, but this one was really tough to get through.

Summary: Good Movie, Uneven DVD
Review: I'm going to be hyper critical and say this dvd transfer is a bit uneven. Some parts of the movie looks like old seventies porn movies, soft, dark and grainy. The colours are a tad faded and the detail is soft. The old english dub sounds sharp, clear but a bit flat with no bass. The Scottish track is very dated and muffled compared to the dubbed track. This is very apparent if you switch back and forth between the two tracks during any music only parts of the movie. The film elements have a lot of scratches on it which is too bad. It looks like a 20 year old film. On the plus side the movie has lots of scene extensions compared to the old vhs version. It's like a Director's cut for those of us who know this film like the back of our hands! The colour overall is much better than the old vhs. The cover art stinks, I don't know why they didn't use the original poster art? But thank MGM for finally putting this out in N. America. This film and its sequel has been available in the U.K. for two years now! I hope they put out the sequel "Gregory's Two Girls" soon.
