Summary: Awesome! Finally a movie about the REST of us!
Review: As a person who has struggled with Gender Identity Disorder her whole life I was touched to see [finally!] a movie that dealt with the childhood experiences of a transsexual. My gender therapist suggested I view this movie and after several months of seeing her I finally sat down to watch it. I saw so much of myself in the story and it was a great emotional release for me to cry--almost all the way through the movie and then another 5 or ten minutes afterward. My family is now dealing with my GID and this is one that I want them to watch so hopefully they can get a little understanding of the prejudice we face.If I could slip this into my HS English curriculum I definitely would. This is an excellent film about tolerance. After all not everyone feels right in the body they were born with. Some are very comfortable being male or female as they have been designated by society, but others through no fault of their own do not. Why can't we just allow people to be who they are and accept them for the unique gifts they bring to the world? I really didn't understand the R rating either--but I do wish they had left the F word out as that was offensive. When I come out to my own children this will probably be a movie I will show them [of course with the explanation that the F word is not appropriate for them to use!]. You will not regret viewing Ma Vie En Rose; it will open your eyes to the wonders of diversity.

Summary: Sweet, harmless little film on tolerance
Review: I've found that if you are watching French films for the language practice (I plead guilty), boring films work better than good ones that will distract you with interesting characters and situations. This does. I found myself watching the film and really rooting for this poor child, an extremely sweet and feminine little girl who is, through some cosmic glitch, trapped in a little boy's body. I was struck with the honesty of how the mother becomes furious at the child who is, she feels, screwing up her neat, conventional life. The child's pain is heart-breaking, but the film ends on an upbeat note. I could have done with fewer visual fantasy sequences.

Summary: Young Courage
Review: I can not imagine the courage that young person must have had. For I have lived fourty some years hiding myself. I would recommend this film to anyone who has a transexual in their lives. Be it a family member, a co-worker, a neighbor, or a friend. There is no choice when it comes to who we are. I wish they had a english verion of this film.

Review: MA VIE EN ROSE is one of the most beautiful and moving films ever made. There is a huge stack of reviews already here at AMAZON so I would just like to encourage all those VHS people to get into DVD and experience this and so many other titles in an even more satisfied manner. Check out ZAZIE the outstanding French rock star who duets on the title theme song to MA VIE EN ROSE. Punch in ZAZIE on the CD search and her albums will come up. Her album Zen is the one that captures the similar spirit but be sure to get both MADE IN LOVE and MADE IN LIVE too. For fans of French cinema in general check out the stunning DVD of INDOCHINE...if you have seen INDOCHINE only on tape then you have never seen nor heard it...get the DVD it is truly reference standard and a whole other experience. Summary: wonderful film
Review: I saw this film in the boston film festival a couple of years ago and loved it. The cinematography is beautiful: The vibrant candy colored pastel colors jump right out at you. The story is endearing, as well as the performances. The little boy who plays the character ludovic is fantastic. I highly suggest seeing this film. It is a film that had to be made oversees, because I couldn't see Hollywood making a film as wonderful as this. ...

Review: Ma vie en Rose is that rare film that comes a long every so often and not only touches your heart but rips it apart with its honesty. The truth shall set you free. It's too bad little Ludo is the only one true to himself and society has the audacity to question his purity of intent. It makes you burn with anger but also melt with love. The little boy who stars in this film is excellent

Summary: NOTHING WORTHY OF AN "R" HERE...THE RATING BOARD'S NUTS!
Review: More than a bold statement about how people generally treat those who are different, this film is primarily a wonderfully sweet story. This film works so well because of its many levels: Ludovic's charm and the daydreams he uses to escape (you can't help but love him and feel for him), his parents' concern and anger (sometimes irrational but often justified), and the neighborhood's consternation at what appears to be something completely out of whack with their suburban "normalcy" and blandness. The interesting part of this film was that, despite the general belief that children can often be most cruel to each other, it was the adults who misbehaved and caused all the problems. Definitely a first-rate story with a great blend of comedy, drama, and tears. As far as the technical aspects of the movie are concerned, they're also first-rate. The widescreen format is exactly what this movie needs (I simply couldn't imagine it in fullscreen format). The colors are bold and bright, and the sound is well-balanced. The subtitles are available in English (with some incomplete translation at times, and a few unnecessary vulgarities), French (with a word-for-word translation), and Spanish. Like others here, I cannot comprehend the "R" rating. There's no sex and there's no violence. I've seen "G"-rated Disney movies with more questionable material than this! The f-word is present, but only because of the translators' choice of syntax: it wasn't necessary and certainly wasn't in the French script. In fact, with a proper translation, this movie could have been released with a "PG" rating. As such, I personally believe this movie should be seen by high school students as part of a curriculum on tolerance. Heck, the English subtitles even use the word "bent" instead of the more common slang word for homosexual...so if they could be polite with that word, they certainly didn't need to use the other vulgarities. (For those who don't speak French, here's a clarification about a certain aspect of the dialog which, admittedly, is difficult to translate. The French word "tapette" has two meanings: it's a slang word meaning homosexual, and it also means fly-swatter. What meaning it takes is obviously dependent on the overall context of the conversation. I hope this clarifies the scene in which Ludo's dad takes out the fly-swatter to explain what "bent" means). On a final note, there IS an available soundtrack to his film. You can get it on Amazon's French site at www.amazon.fr for around twenty dollars --at the time of this writing, anyway. Even if you don't know French, the site is set up exactly like the American website, so it's easy to navigate (and the icons are the same...a shopping cart in France looks like a shopping cart in America).

Summary: DRESS FOR DISTRESS!
Review: I also couldn't believe that this movie received an "R" rating. It's in the same category with other males in drag films such as: "Silence Of The Lambs"; "Psycho"; and "Dressed To Kill." How cowardly the film ratings board must be. Or they're trying to "SAVE THE CHILDREN!" Diatribe Over Now :) This film is very sweet and shows how far people are willing to go to make you CONFORM to what is "NORMAL", i.e. COMMON. Hate crimes against children condoned by adults who fail to act. I am still a little uncomfortable with TVs and transexuals, but this movie helps us understand the pain they experience. I also enjoy watching "Wigstock," which is very funny except for one gross simulated birth sequence :0 and "The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert." P.S. I REALLY want the soundtrack to "Ma Vie En Rose"! I haven't been able to find it anywhere. :(

Summary: Masterpiece! Funny, sad, hopeful
Review: This movie is brilliant and would have never been made in the US; it explores a delicate topic, but with total humanity. Even though you completely feel for Ludo, you can also understand his family, and the outside friends and neighbors who treat them badly, and this is something new. Ludo is the way he is, but he's still a child and doesn't even fully understand what his family and the adults around him are trying to ignore or "fix", why they feel threatened. Makes you watery-eyed but laugh and mushy smile too. If I had to choose just a couple movies in the history of movies that I think people Needed to, Must See, this one would be one of them! (right up there with Schindler's List...)

Summary: ahhhh
Review: I saw this movie in the cinema, and the atmosphere at the end was amazing. Everyone was looking at eachother with mushy smiles on their faces and clasping hands. It is incredibly sweet. Don't be put off, though. I can't bear sickly sweet movie stuff. This is just really nice. It's true that there's nothing here to justify and R rating. I would take children to see it without hesitating.
