Summary: PSYCHO TIME, FOLKS
Review: How would you feel if you actually take part in a murder as a witness ? Not so great, I suppose. Michael Haneke, FUNNY GAMES' director, has counted on that reaction while shooting his movie. So the main character of FUNNY GAMES will never forget to look at the camera and make you feel guilty. In Haneke's opinion, by doing that arty trick, violence is denounced and the audience has understood the pernicious role of TV and horror movies in today's society. Well, maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, one thing is sure, it's impossible to give an opinion on FUNNY GAMES without having in mind that the director's arguments will always be better than mine. If I say that the plot of this movie is not so interesting, he will say that the purpose of FUNNY GAMES was not to present a horror movie and if I say that the actors were really great and the murders absolutely frightening, he will say that I fell into the trap and have to analyze my reaction : it's definitely not sane to enjoy murders on screen.

So, judge by yourself.

A dishonest DVD.

Summary: A Disturbing And Unrelenting Film
Review: I only give this movie 4 stars because it has succeeded where only few movies have. This movie actually disturbed me .This is not an easy thing to do. Anybody who sits down to watch this movie, I will warn you ahead of time, it is very brutal and does not have a happy ending. But it is a powerful and emotionally draining movie.

Summary: A truly ugly and brutal film.
Review: This film is guaranteed to make anyone watching it feel very uncomfortable. True, in the past there have been other films which have unsettled its audiences. For example Wes Craven's Last House on the Left, Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, and William Fruet's Death Weekend just to name a few. However, in these films, there is a satisfying closing to at least one sympathetic character. This is not the case in Funny Games. The audience is subjected to watch the degradation, beating, torture, emotional suffering, and eventual fate of the victims. Don't think that I have given away anything; it is made very clearly throughout the film of what will happen to the victims. If director M. Haneke's point was to show that sometimes there is no happy ending, he should have told this type of story in a straight manner. Instead, he adds something just to be different; like getting the viewer to interact with the carnage and towards the end, offering a "twist" pseudo-ending. These additions take away any power generated in the story. Had the director decided to tell this story straight, the film probably would have matched up to films like Se7en, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, or the French version of the Vanishing. The film DOES have great performances by all involved and beautiful photography, but even these positive aspects are overshadowed by the films ugliness and cruelty. View at your own risk.

Summary: Waste of time
Review: Perhaps I'm used to the American habit of rooting for the victim, but I disliked the movie greatly. The family accepted their situation with little or no struggle and the director relied on us accepting too many things. There was no gun in the house. When the bad guy was on the dock with the mother and the boat pulled in, she didn't shove the bad guy in the water and then beg the three people in the boat to help her subdue him. Too bad Germans weren't this passive during WWII.

Summary: Could have been better...
Review: A good film that misses the mark by being too enamored of itself. Making asides to the audience was trite even when the film was made; a rewind (literally) scene simply didn't belong. The latter half of the movie lags quite a bit, due in part to the incredible passivity of the surviving family members. Funny Games is nonetheless a suspenseful film -- but it could have been a lot better had the director relied more on the strength of the story and less on contrived gimmicks.

Summary: Pretty good film.
Review: I've watched Funny Games a handful of times. I'm not a big fan of it, but there's no doubt that it's quite different. The plot deals with a family that takes a trip to their lakeside house for some respite. From there they meet a couple of young guys and trouble begins. This is quite an intense psychological film that doesn't hold back. The acting by everyone involved is good. I don't consider Funny Games to be a great film, but it's still satisfactory and worth a watch.

Summary: Boring .....
Review: Why does everyone put four or five stars for this movie? . This is a most boring movie I ever seen. I shouldn't of bought this video and I wish my money will come back!

Summary: Strange movie that kept me watching.
Review: I caught this movie on the Independent Film Channel late one night and only intended to watch a little since I had to get up early the next morning. The movie was so strange and apalling, I had to see how it ended. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but would not recommend it to just anyone.

Summary: Absolutely incredible!
Review: An amazing film that redefines the hostage drama. This film is so sharp and so tightly constructed that it takes two viewings to truly unravel all the horror contained in it. It is oppressive and relentless, but ultimatly satisfying. Bravo!

Summary: Dull, dull, dull
Review: No, this really will not do. Does Haneke really think he is contributing anything original or intelligent to the already-hackneyed screen violence debate? Arthouse cinema must try harder than this sort of trite, 'but-real-violence-is-awful' stuff. Worse still, Haneke's insistence on having his characters make asides to the audience is not only patronising; it removes all credibility and reduces the characters to author's mouthpieces about whom we cannot be bothered to care. This is not disturbing or thought-provoking. It is merely smug, suspenseless, hectoring and dull beyond belief.
