Summary: An Adventure on a Magical Island
Review: "I Am Cuba" is a fascinating film with masterful visuals. We get shots from above, below, behind and from every other conceivable angle - but this camera work enhances rather than distracts and almost has to be seen to be believed. The film tells the story of pre-revolutionary Cuba in several small stories and from different points of view - but all leading to the same conclusion. The corrupt regime has to go. We meet overfed rich vacationers who treat the local women as just another commodity. US sailors on a drunken spree. A family of sugar cane workers (in a particularly powerful segment) and student revolutionaries as well as mountain guerrillas. The final segment is a bit long and could have used some editing. Also at first it takes a moment to get used to the melange of languages in the film. Excellent both as entertainment and a powerful historical statement regarding pre-Castro Cuba and the different elements that contriubted to the revolution.

Summary: "Nothing's indecent in Cuba."
Review: "I am Cuba" was made in 1964 as a propaganda film funded by the Soviet government. The film's intention is to show how bad life in Cuba was before the revolution that replaced Batista with Castro. The script is coauthored by Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Cuban novelist Enrique Pineda Barnet and directed by Russian filmmaker Mikhail Kalatozov.

The film contains 4 sections or stories that illustrate the abuses of the Batista regime. The first involves a young girl who is employed at a nightclub. The second is the story of a sugar cane farmer. The third is the story of a student who becomes swept up in the revolution, and the final story is the tale of a peasant who is provoked into fighting the Batista government.

The depictions of the Americans in the film are clumsy. The first story contains some nightclub scenes with Americans, and the Russians who play the Americans whoop it up--playing Americans as they think decadent Americans would act when unleashed in a Cuban nightclub. In the third story, a gang of hormone-driven American sailors hunts down a terrified Cuban girl on the streets on Havana. But these scenes are isolated, and more amusing than anything else.

The film's great beauty has to be in its extraordinary cinematography--black silhouettes against the landscape, palm trees swaying in the wind, and smoke swirling in the cloud-filled skies. The film also captures the backbreaking hopelessness of terrible, inescapable poverty. The dialogue is in Spanish with Russian voiceover and subtitles in English. Foreign film fans should take the time to seek out this remarkable film--it's really worth watching for the cinematography alone--displacedhuman

Review: "I Am Cuba" is a stunningly photographed piece of pro-Castro propaganda. The film simple minded message US capitalist are evil and the Cuban revolution is good is explored in a series of episodes. The photography is amazing and its ironic how beautifull Havana looked then to the disater it has clearly become.

Review: "Soy Cuba" es una película que todos deben mirar. Es de un director de Rusia que se llama Mikheil Kalatozov. El usa sus talentos para describir Cuba durante la revolución y como los norteamericanos ricos usaron Cuba. Esta película consiste en cuatro episodios que tienen su enfoque en la representación de Cuba durante este tiempo. La película es de 1964 y esta en blanco y negro, pero el cinematografía es muy advanzada y parece una película de hoy. Por muchos años no se ha permitido esta película, pero fínalmente con la ayuda de Francis Ford Coppola y Martin Scorses en 1995 la re-estrenaron. Si no ha visto esta película recomiendo que la mire. La película esta llena de belleza y de sufrimiento y los dos contrastes como el blanco y negro. Hay algunas personas que dicen que la película es pura propoganda comunista, pero tiene un mensaje muy importante para los cubanos de la revolución.

Review: 'Soy Cuba' es una película muy buena. Aunque esta película es en blanco y negro es tan buena que no se observa la falta de color. Hay cuatro episodios separados en esta película, pero todos están conectados con un mensaje igual. El primer episodio es de una mujer joven. Ella tiene dos nombres, María y Betty porque ella es prostitua. Creo que ella quiere dos nombres como una manera de separar sus "dos vidas". Un nombre es muy importante. Cuando usa un nombre diferente, siente como una persona diferente. A ella no le gusta su vida pero es muy pobre y la prositución es su decisión proque no encuentra otro trabajo. Algunas personas pueden pensar que María/Betty tiene otras alternativas pero creo que es facíl pensar esto cuando no está en su situación. María tiene un novio y cosas empeoran mala cuando él encuentra del trabajo secreto de María. El segundo episodio consiste en una familia, un padre y su hijo y hija. Esta familia trabaja la tierra y cultivan azucar. La familia es pobre pero en el principio pensé que estaba muy contenta. Pero todo lo que tienen es llevado cuando los dueños de la tierra donde la familia vive y trabaja le dicen al padre que todas las cosas se vendieron a la compañía, United Fruit. El padre reacciona en una manera extraña, pero pienso que una manera buena también. Mire la película y vea por su mismo. El tercer episodio es de los estudiantes libres que quieren política revolucionaria. Hay un grupo de estudiantes que toman las cosas en sus manos y tienen algunos problemas durante sus tentativas rebeldes. Esta parte es triste tambíen proque se ve que personas buenas mueren. El último episodio está en el campo. Una familia, Amelia y Mariano y sus hijos viven en el campo y quieren vivir una vida tranquila aunque el ejército bombardea todo. Pero cuando su casa es destruido un hijo muere, Mariano decide juntarse con un grupo de rebeldes. La película termina sobre una nota buena. Todos los episodios son de cuentos diferents pero todos consisten en personas de Cuba. ¿Qué/quién es Cuba? Cuba es todo lo que está en Cuba, todas las personas, los estudiantes, las prostitutas, los extranjeros, el gobierno, los rebeldes, y la tierra, y los pueblos. Todo esto es Cuba.

Summary: I am Cuba
Review: ... From an artistic point of view the movie is one-dimentional, flat and uninspiringly boring, not to mention so badly shot as to leave one wondering who the was the camera director ... ? The movie criticizes prostitution in pre-Castro Cuba but there is now more prostitution there now than ever before. They criticize United Fruit but the fact was that American Sugar Company built houses, schools and clinics for their workers, while the Cuban-owned mills did not and by 1959 60% of the sugar output was in the hands of Cubans. The film made a point of showing the guerrillas learning to read but what good is knowing how to read if the government does not allow oppossing views or other political parties to take part in a democratic process? It is not a good film in any sense of the word.

Summary: Propaganda? So What! It is Beautiful.
Review: ...P>"I Am Cuba" is mythopoeia par excellence. As an example of that genre, it is highly idealized. I would have been disappointed if it had been otherwise. And as Virgina Woolf said In A Room of One's Own (a wonderful book), all good fiction tells the truth. "I Am Cuba" tells the truth of the Cuban Revolution. Viewers will see in this film the repression and appalling class differences of the Batista regime, the sacrifices and ambivalences of those who participated in the Revolution, and a symbolic representation of the triumph of the revolutionaries. What I found compelling is that Castro is mostly an unseen presence in the film, perhaps more like a whisper than a presence. Instead, the film rightly focuses on the lives of Cubans touched by this great human drama. That is as it should be because the Revolution was about the Cuban people, not just one man.

The film is breathtakingly beautiful. Black and white never appeared more colorful than in this film. Watch it for those reasons. That will be all the reasons that you'll need.

Summary: Most visually compelling film I have ever seen!
Review: A fantastic revival. This film is both a study in propaganda and a lesson in visual mastery. A Soviet view of issues confronting Cuba's people before and during the revolution. All Black and White and full of breathtaking, tense, brooding, and lyrical scenes "I Am Cuba" does suprising justice to a country that begs for color film. The opening sequence will astound you. My only regret is that the Cuban Spanish originally spoken was poorly overdubbed into Russian, which is then subtitled to English. In all a must see.

Summary: This film should be required for high school history class!
Review: Americans are generally very much in the dark thanks to public school education and the corporate-owned and operated US media. It is a tragedy that films like this are not required for high school history class.
Remember the Bay of Pigs? This was a terrorist operation organized by the Kennedy Administration and the CIA back in the early 1960's to assassinate Fidel Castro. Why? Because Castro wanted a country free from criminal US corporations like the United Fruit Company. Why don't Americans realize who the real terrorists are?
Because young people in the USA are not trained how to think or use logic and reason when making decisions about history, relationships, or anything that can determine how to create a future worth living in or looking forward to.
The wars in Vietnam, Nicaragua, Panama, and Iraq 1 and 2 are wars of aggression, wars that resulted in the hanging of Nazi's after WW2.
Wake up Americans and let us stop the terrorism that we use to build our empire, just like the Spanish and English have done a few hundred years ago!
