Cannibal Ferox (A.K.A. Make Them Die Slowly)

Review: Whoah! This is without a doubt THE most intense film I have ever seen in cinema history! I have not seen any of the sick and twisted 'cannibal movies' from the 70s and 80s until I saw this one just recently and I must say that for what it gives, it is quite good! "Cannibal Ferox" is an Italian splatter flick made by Director Umberto Lenzi and has been banned in 31 countries, and I can obviously understand why.

Originally released as a motion picture in 1983, the movie takes place in such areas as New York City (If you look hard enough you will see the World Trade Center buildings during the opening credits still standing tall before the 9/11 tragedy) and the exotic locales of the Amazon jungle in South America. (Where most of the filming was done) What we get here is a mix of a detective crime story in the Big Apple to a horrifying (not to mention REALISTIC) account taking place in the Green Inferno! The camera angles are shot professionally and helps add more brilliance and suspense to the atmosphere. (Kudos to Mr. Lenzi) The tagline on the front of the DVD cover pretty much speaks for itself:

"WARNING! Due to its SHOCKING and VIOLENT subject matter, NO ONE UNDER 17 should view this film."

I agree with the other reviewer before me, for I too had also thought that I'd seen it all. Not even "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" can outdo this movie on the shock level! I must admit that I had doubts about it at first and expected nothing more but an educational lesson into the world of cannibalism. However, after viewing the theatrical trailer many times, I decided to give this a look for myself and I must say that they certainly don't make em like this anymore! Today, we are given nothing more but CGI used to create blood & gore in movies. (Which kind of takes away the realism in my opinion)

The acting is pretty good (despite the fact that this is an old low-budget B-movie), the characters are nicely portrayed [where you start to feel sympathy for them, even the bad ones], & the musical score is one of the most haunting and creepy soundtracks I have ever heard! In addition, there is also plenty of blood & gore to around! Be warned though (as the other reviewers have stated) that this movie is NOT for everyone! If you are easily squeamish and/or the faint of heart, I suggest that you look elsewhere! I also do NOT recommend that young children watch this either, or they could possibly be traumatized for life! (Remember, this WAS banned in 31 countries, after all) On the other hand, those who are horror/gore buffs will most likely get a kick out of this slice of Italian cheese! Goes good with some pizza and beer!

Review: Cannibal Ferox has to be one of the most overrated exploitation/cannibal films ever. The most revolting part of this movie was the acting - poor to say at the least. Not that I purchased the DVD for the acting, because that would be absurd, I purchased it because of all the hype around it. I can tell you it wasn't banned in 31 countries for the cannibalism, nudity and graphic violence; because there wasn't much - it was probably banned for the real life slaughtering of animals ! Not a bad movie if your cable is out. Not worth the money.

Summary: I Thought I Had Seen It All!
Review: Happy New Year...I think! I spent the last two hours
watching my first flick of 2005, and just when I
thought I had seen it all, along comes Umberto Lenzi's
1981 horror classic "Cannibal Ferox". After the first
30 minutes I had a true understanding as to why this
feature has been banned in 31 countries. This deluxe
uncensored letterbox edition was filmed in New York City
and in the Amazon (very similar) Perhaps the movie
poster says it all. "Warrning! Due to its shocking
and violent subject matter, no one under 17 should
view this film." Seventeen??? I'm 55 and I'm not too
sure the ratings commission shouldn't have banned it
in this country. Believe it or not, I purchased it
from Amazon.com.

As most of you know, I am a horror film connoissseur.
This isn't horror...it's gore. Those who don't easily
feel nauseated over blood, guts and ooze, will adore
this "classic" (???). But be forewarned, it is
definitely not for the squeamish. I can't destroy the
shock value by telling you the explicit nature of this
grizzly stomach turner, but the letterbox states..."98
on the vomit meter".

The premise of the film is simple. A young college
student sets out to write her thesis on the "myth"
that cannibals do not eat humans. Her journey is well
worth a PhD.

To provide you with one last clue as to the extreme
sadistic focus of this flick, here's the opening
credit.

"The following feature is one of the most violent
films ever made. There at least two dozen scenes of
barbaric torture and sadistic cruelty graphically
shown. If the presentation of disgusting and
repulsive subject matter upsets you, please do not
view this film."

If you are a horror/gore fan, it gets a resounding
"10" on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest). If
not, please (and I warn you), DO NOT SEE THIS FILM. I
honestly thought I had seen it all, until Lenzi
released this ^&*%(^ on DVD. I'm still catching my
breath.

Summary: Mediocre Giallo...
Review: So notorious, banned in so many nations, hated by cannibal and non-cannibal alike. OK well, I made the last part up, but this film did give off the aura of infamy. Perhaps it was the graphic cover or maybe the tales of castration and meathooks. I was excited when I was about to watch it. I was hoping for some good old Italian gorexploition.
Three anthropologists (well two and a their friend) find themselves in a village on the Amazon River, where two mean are running for their lives. The anthropologists' catamundi gets waten by an anaconda a little before this too. Anyway the running men tell the people awful stories about the cannibals. The female anthropologist refuses to believe the story for it goes against her doctoral thesis. They investigate...
The directing was rubbish. I don't expect good directing while watching a zombie or cannibal flick. I expect blood, guts, and the mandatory eye mutilation (this movie did not dissapoint in that way). Instead of focusing enough on the gore, the director attempted to focus on the horrible prediciment that the adventurers found themselves in. He focused way too much on the emotional strife, conveyed poorly by bad actors, than on the important thing: the cannibals.
The story was corny, the dialougue was corny, there has been better gore in other similar movies, and all of the NYC scenes add nothing to the story. Watch Cannibal Holocaust instead if you want to see some hardcore gorexploitation.

Summary: What is all the fuss about?
Review: Cannibal Ferox is not as gory as it is made out to be.Eaten Alive(Umberto Lenzis other cannibal film) is worse.The film its self is quite good, although the music sounds like a 1970s porno.The reason i give this film three stars is because i expected a lot blood and guts, but ended up being very dissapointed, because if it was as gory as it was made out to be i would have given it five. So if anyone watches this film expecting to be shocked, you will be very dissapointed.

Summary: Cannibal Has Too Much Hype, Very Little BIte
Review: I was in my local DVD trade store one day and I found a copy of 'Ferox' rather cheap. I always wanted to see this movie, but was told it was <<<THE>>> ultimate is grossness. Well needless to say, I was a little disappointed. Yes, it is a little gross, and even in bad taste, but in no way was it the ultimate cannibal tale. People, please! Even "Hannibal" was more vicious. After all the hype what really was left? A slow moving cheapie that uses shock value in replace of real scares, thrills and chills. A tired old wives tale of explorers getting lost, getting eaten, and getting found all chewed up. No real scares, nothing new to see. There are some mildly moody moments, and it is worth seeing only to say, been there-done that. The real downfall of this film really is you don't care about the characters much. Some aren't really likable at all.
