Summary: An modern love story with intelligent humour. *spoilers*
Review: "Chasing Amy" is one of my all time favorite films. I rave about it to anyone who will listen, any chance I get.

As a lesbian woman myself I was so moved by Joey Lauren Adams scene with Ben Affleck. When Alyssa describes to Holden that she doesn't want to close herself off from half the population and risk missing out of that one chance at real love... that was beautiful, in my opinion.

I've read reviews where they seem to think that Kevin Smith was trying to say that all any lesbian needs is a guy? I'd love to know where they got that message from? Perhaps from Bankie's diatribe which was purposely there to dispel that belief? In the end who is she sitting with? Oh, that's right... HER GIRLFRIEND. I'd love to know how that means she needed a man?

Alyssa was looking for the right person to love. I don't see why that becomes sexist... when it is esentially sex-less. It's simply finding love where ever you can, and holding on to it for dear life. Or else you could lose it.

The DVD is great. The commentary is helarious, there's stuff everywhere... and if you check out the "Color Bars" it's a riot. There's tons of stuff to look through, although I did find that my disk skips a little at the middle of the film. It's nothing to major.

Summary: Smith tackles romance and delivers a hilarious movie
Review: Kevin Smith tries his hand at a comedy with romantic undertones and once again does a great job. Although this movie is considered to be a romantic movie it sure as hell not one of those run-of-the mill chick movies. The movie centers around Holden McNeil(Ben Affleck) who falls for a beautiful blonde(Joey Lauren Adams)who just happens to be a lesbian. Holden refuses to give up and persues Adams' character which to leads to many humourous situations. Jason Lee once again gives an underrated peformance as Holden's homophobic business partner and best friend.

Summary: Okay, I'll say it... Kevin Smith's a genius! You happy now?
Review: I finally have to admit it... Kevin Smith's a genius in the indie film scene. Although I saw a spark of that wizardry in CLERKS & MALLRATS, it wasn't 'til my first look at the third chapter in the four-part (soon to be five) "New Jersey Trilogy". Yes, CHASING AMY was proof positive to me that the guy who plays 'Quiet Robert' is one of the greatest creative talents in film. Why? One reason...

With CHASING AMY, he became one of a small handful writer/directors to produce a romantic comedy that was successful in appealing mainly to guys (the rest of that handful is reserved for the makers of the much-bigger-budgeter "There's Something About Mary"). He knew just the right formula, too: first, get a romantic relationship going between a big, fairly macho guy and a lesbian- you know, a match you'd never figure could never happen in a million years. Then, have the guys' best friend & co-worker try to sabotage the relationship at every opportunity. Add a few sexual & scatological yuks ( I consider Banky & Alyssa's swapping stories about their sexual encounter 'war wounds' to be the funniest scene in all of the Smith flicks) here & there, a reference or two that ties into the previous chapters of the NJT, several references to comic books and the Star Wars Trilogy (gotta appeal to the geeks, you know), and voila!

Oh, all right, there's more to it than that. There's also the obligatory scene featuring Jay & Silent Bob where the latter member of the pair is at his least silent (he seems to ramble on forever here), getting down to the basic message of the whole movie. After taking a look at this scene, you'll discover who the REAL man is in the Jay & Silent Bob relationship. Mr. Bob is to Smith flicks what those "Dummies" books are for layman computer users. Kind of a "Movie Plots for Dummies" guide, you know? Anyway, our hero Holden, the one on the receiving end of Bob's advice, gets it a little too late in the game to help matters any. Pretty unfortunate, but that's life for you.

Like many of its other DVD presentations, Criterion really went all-out to include as many extras as possible in their release of CHASING AMY. There's a second audio track featuring commentary by Smith, Ben Affleck, & several others, trailers, deleted scenes & outtakes, and a lot more. In most cases, I prefer having the cut scenes from a film restored to the flick. But in this instance (at least in my opinion), many of the cut scenes wouldn't have worked out as well if they were put back in. However, most of 'em were rather hilarious in their own right. See for yourself!

Summary: Kevin Smith at his WORST!
Review: It starts off great "BLACK RAGE! BLACK RAGE!" and theappearance of Jason Lee comforts us, while Ben Affleck discomfortsus. However, after the usual shennanigins, CA is a very sub-par, BADmovie. All we see is Ben Affleck moping about stupid lesbian JoeyLauren Adams for a whole hour and a half. Jason Lee is funny though, and the very brilliant scene with Jay and Silent Bob is great. (onescene? come on!) And the finger cuffs scene is hilarious, it had merolling. But, the rest of the movie is boring and uninspired. Theending is so contrived and stupid I was hoping the DVD would burn upin my PS2 and maybe I'd get my $299 bucks back-that's how much Ideserve after watching this.

Summary: A poor follow up to Clerks
Review: I came to this film with high expectations after watching the foul-mouthed but funny Clerks, but I was sorely disappointed. This film is not in the same class. While the substandard black and white photography in Clerks added to the endearing ad hoc nature of that film, in this (although in colour) it just appears cheap and nasty.

A lot of the dialogue is rather stilted and inaudible, and the script, although subtler than Clerks, is nowhere near as funny. Why Criterion chose to give this film their fine treatment is something of a mystery.

Summary: My least fave
Review: I like all of Kevin Smith's movies, but this one I watch the least. Mallrats the most, clerks second, dogma third, and then this. This movie has some of my favorite lines and funniest moments, but Adams performance is painful. The overall story is good, and if it weren't for her singing and crying in the rain, I could take it, but both are forced and terrible. Everything else seems typical of Smith's movies. And that I like. The extras on the DVD are nice but I'd recommend clerks or mallrats if you are really a fan of Smith's style of writing. As always, there is an underlying point... Figure it out for yourself. And remember, all of his movies are good, they just may not be for everyone.

Summary: If you're looking for comedy, look elsewhere
Review: When I first saw this movie, I had never seen one of Kevin Smith's movies, or even heard of him, so I didn't really know what to expect, although I'd heard this movie was something of a comedy. It started out great, with the first 10 minutes putting me on the floor in hysterics. I didn't laugh through the rest of the film. While the movie is interesting as a kind of tragic love story, and very well written, it was almost devoid of any sort of humor, which was what I was looking for. If you're looking for a powerful, tragic romance, this is the movie for you. If you want something funny, watch the first 10 minutes and then turn it off.

Summary: Kevin Smith's best film on a great DVD.
Review: Kevin Smith has done some great movies, and "Chasing Amy" is no exception. A lot of people who have seen "Chasing Amy" is often heard to say that its director has 'grown up.' With that in mind, "Chasing Amy" is the story of a comic book artist who falls in love with another comic-book artist only to find out something shocking him. This film was great even if it was a way for Smith to say something personal. I personally thought kudos should have gone to Jason Lee, who was also great in Smith's other films "Mallrats" and "Dogma." Despite the message of the film and the situations the characters faced, this film had some comedic moments particularly from Jason Lee and Dwight Ewell which included topics such as the oppression in the "Star Wars" universe, or the lifestyle of Archie from the "Archie" comic books. Let us not forget Smith's notorious characters Jay and Silent Bob, who have even smaller roles in this film than they did in "Clerks." While Jay is his usual, obscene self, we learn something about his sidekick Silent Bob that, if you've seen Smith's previous films, might change your thoughts on this character. It seems kind of strange saying something that is more for the dramatic than this comedy, but I guess Smith isn't all about toilet humor after all. Reviewing the DVD, it's excellent. I really liked this DVD. I appreciated the qualities of picture and sound. They were good and did not bother me at all, though I wouldn't care anyway because you wouldn't really care about the kind of audio and picture quality for this kind of film. The bonus material, being that this is a Criterion Collection DVD, is packed. You have the film's trailer, followed by many deleted scenes cut from the film along with several outtakes. But, of course, no Kevin Smith DVD is complete without his infamous commentary which includes Smith, Affleck, Jason Mewes, and the crew of "Chasing Amy." There's also a strange addition to this DVD, but I'll let you find that out. Overall, Kevin Smith fans will really appreciate this DVD for both the film and its content. Movie fanatics will also appreciate this film, but it is recommended that you rent it first.

Summary: Crappy moral piece
Review: This movie is so pat. Boring, not romantic, not much comedy. Sickeningly straightlaced, hetero mets lesbian (who's only been waiting for it), hetero cannot take lesbians pre-lesbian love-life ... I may be a boring heterosexual but this movie's moral message revolts me.
