Summary: An excellent Dragonball Z movie
Review: It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that FUNimation has fallen WAY BEHIND with the release of the Dragonball Z movies. If they were trying to emulate the original releases in Japan, this should've been release THREE YEARS AGO, to accompany the airing of the Cell Saga in America. Oh well, I'll just get on with my review.

Here's the basic plot of the movie: During a day in the park (probably during the ten days training for the Cell Game), a spaceship lands. The pilot is a Saiyan, who invites Vegeta to rule over a new planet Vegeta. The Z crew travels to this new planet, but soon discovers not all is what it seems. The Saiyan who asked them to come ot the planet was betrayed by King Vegeta, and wants to get revenge by killing the Vegeta we know and love (or hate, depending on who you are.) Who's the killer? This Saiyan's son, Broly. The Legendary Super Saiyan.

This movie probably didn't occur because the evidence is overwhelming that Goku and Vegeta are the only surviving full-blooded Saiyans. Likewise, it's not likely they would leave the earth if they had the Cell Game to prepare for (they had to have trained, you know.) Because this movie is probably false, the sequels to it, movies 10 and 11, are automatically rendered false.

Overall this is an excellent movie, though it's a bit anticlimatic despite the running length. However, it's helped out by the fact that it's the longest running of all the DBZ movies (at roughly eighty minutes.) If you're a fan of DBZ, I have to recommend this movie.

Summary: OK, let's get this straight...
Review: Muffadal Attarwalla, you are wrong! The dvd released by FUNimation is 100% unedited. Goku never dies, him along with everyone else, escapes on the spaceship! I don't know what you THINK you saw, but I've seen the uncut Japanese and dub and I can tell you, no footage was cut. Quit making up lies in order to stop people from buying this DVD.

Anyway, on to the movie itself. The visuals are great, the DBZ animators obviously got alot more money, so the anime and 3d effects will surprise you at times. The story is good too, considering you can only fit so much plot into a DBZ film. The voice acting in both versions is good. In the Jap version, you get the indomitable va's voicing their characters flawlessly. The dub actully sounds good for a change. Usually the dub actors in the TV series suck, but they really got into it in this movie, so the acting is top-notch, especially Vic Mignogna for voicing a particularly evil sounding Broly.

The music is great in both versions, although they're very different. In the Jap version, you get the standard Head Cha La theme, the classical orchestral score from the TV show, and a special ending theme from Kageyama Hironobu. In the dub, the FUNi folks decided to get some lesser-known metal bands to do the background music. You get the dub DBZ theme redone by a band called Tendril, plus some other hard-hitting tunes. It gives off a completely different feel from the original, but still fits the movie well.

Anyway, if you're a DBZ fan in the slightest, you'll find this movie to be extremely enjoyable. You may even like both versions, if you can handle the differences in music. Hopefully FUNimation will continue to pour their haert and soul into these movie releases, unlike the horrid treatment of the TV series.

Summary: The first of the gretest saga of dbz Saiyan vs. Saiyan
Review: OK, as a respones to all the reviews on this video b4 me...i would like to say 1st off: This saga was originally created to be after the cell saga...but b4 the saiyans fight cell at the cell games. 2nd off: broly did not have a power lvl of 645 million...it was at his max 4,100,000 and he couldnt go to ssj4...in fact he nvr reaches even ssj2...he accomplishes exactly what trunks does in the cell saga does and thats ussj or otherwise known as ultimate ssj( when your muscles get very large and u basically look like a blonde swarchzenegger). In addition the second movie titled "second coming" broly again has not accomplished ssj2 and his max power now is 6,500,000 this happens between the badidi and buu sagas. The third movie (which i haven't yet seen) Broly has yet again not accomplished ssj2 and his max power level now is 8,200,000.And this is between kid buu saga and the world martial arts tourney with uub.Now there are many sites out there that will tell u that broly was defeated by a triple kamehameha between goku gohan and goten in the First movie...but he was not, he was defeated this way...in a sense...killed in the THIRD movie. As for his defeat in the first movie, it was completely legitimate because gokus power level without the boosts from his allies was only 1,800,000 and with the allies power...it was 3,300,000 plus vegeta added another 1,000,000 with made him 4,300,000 to broly's 4,100,000. Also broly was not killed by comet kumoire.he survived the blast which was an estimated 3,500,000 strength of damage. He was only temporarily unconscious from the punch..
Lastly I'd like to make a comment about the review from the kid who said "vegeta was portrayed as a second rate saiyan"...Well for one vegeta never...NEVER..has defeated another saiyan in combat(xcept Nappa). And vegeta's power level in that movie while being a super saiyan was only 1,300,000...even trunks ssj was 1,500,000 and gohan was right behind him with 1,150,000 and piccolo had 1,500,000..Also, piccolo never had respect for vegeta in anyway..infact he often reffered to him as a " foolish man"...the only time piccolo actually agreed on sumthin with vegeta was in the buu saga referring to his sacrafice to destroy buu.which also failed. In short, vegeta ...in the movie was a second rate saiyan , atleast by the "bar that broly had set".
If u watch vegeta and goku's second battle in the babidi saga u know where i got that kind of comment from...

Summary: One of the Best DBZ Movies
Review: Ok, if you're used to the other DBZ movies that have been released in the US recently, the beginning half an hour or so will probably seem a little boring to you. Especially if you don't want to see any sort of plot or story and just want action. On the other hand, if you appreciate a good story this is a first for a DBZ movie. It also is the reason for the 70 minute running time while most of the other movies are 45 minutes.

Anyways, the movie is very well done. The animation is great. The story is one of, if not THE, best of all 13 DBZ movies. The Ebglish version's music helps keep the movie going without feeling drawn out or slow. And there's more comedy in this movie than most any of the others, and it all fits too. The big fight (the second half of the movie) is rather one sided since Brolli's so danged strong. No, he does not go past Super Saiya-jin 1 persay. On the other hand, he was born with a power level of 10,000 (Goku was born with 2), so his one level of Super Saiya-jin allows him to clothsline the rest of the Saiya-jin with the greatest of ease. On the down side of things, the English dub does sound a bit rushed as far as the pacing of the lines (not the quality). And the Japanese version's music does tend to make the movie feel like it's draging on (except in a few places like, where Brolli finally goes Super in a big way). Also the end seems rather sudden.

Overall, it does balance out to be one of the best DBZ movies of the whole 13 movie series and certainly the best of the 8 they've released in the US.

A few personal things I have against FUNimation in their release of these movies. Why aren't they widescreen? They really should be. Even though they are a bit short (half the length of a "normal" movie except for this one) they WERE released in the theaters in Japan and they are widescreen. There are shots in the movies that look chopped off on the sides and that's because they (FUNimation) altered the movies to a 1.33:1 ratio when they're originally 1.85:1. It just bothers me to see the movies 95% whole. Also, I wish they'd release the movies faster. There are 5 left and the whole of the DBZ TV seires has been released in the US now. The 13th movie takes place after they defeat Buu, but before the last three episodes of the series. These probably won't affect anyone's opinion of the movie, but I just feel that it should be known.

Pick up this movie, it's a definate must see!

Summary: My mind remembers now
Review: Once again, I truly remember why I love(d) the DBZ series back in the day, yet avoided its two loathsome complimentary series (DB & DBGT) and it is all captured in this masterpiece of a film. The long, but not boring, stretch, the silly humor inserted at the most random moments, the wonderful blend of humor/armageddon/action, and best of all, more Saiyan history! It's about time we hear a little more about the Saiyan race (even if it's not official Toriyama material, it's still nice). I do feel that some might complain about the final fight scene being a bit excessive in terms of length, but anyone who truly loves the series shouldn't mind a bit of dragging on - in my opinion, it's one of the series unique merits. Broly was a fascinating, deep character, like his father, and had I not read the character profiles before seeing the film run its course, it [the feature] wouldn't have been predictable at all. I usually hate Goku, but here he is so ridiculously stupid and childish, even in the most dramatic moments, that it only beefs up the lovable DBZness all the more.

But everyone's a critic, myself included evidently, so I'm going to show my anal stickler side and talk about the few (minor) problems I did have with this DVD/feature. I found the voice for Broly to be a little...off. I've seen plenty of pictures of Broly from DBZ fansites a while before even viewing the film and frankly I was expecting a deeper, more rugged voice, a la Super Buu form 2 (U.S. dub version). Broly's death could have made some more sense, but it was still nice. The last thing on the DVD (not the feature) that I will nitpick on is in the "extras" menu - the trailer labeled as "Dragon Ball Z" could have been labeled as "The Fusion Saga trailer" :P. And yes, that's pretty much the only reasons why I gave the film 4 stars.

Those small complaints aside, I could not be in greater anticipation for the sequel to this feature: "Broli: The Second Coming" (coming out this spring)!

One last thing: the reviewer "K. Ta" who posted a review a few spots before me is obviously an imbecile and though I do agree that Broly's death could have been a little bit better, it was still entertaining nevertheless and giving a movie 1 stars because of that hair-sized argument is a prime example of stupidity. And yes, you did fail to see that this series is the best.

Summary: I was Wrong
Review: Sorry William Ball, you were right. I asked one of my friends if I could borrow his Dragonball Z VCD collection and I rewatched the Broly movie. The only thing I can think of is that the version I had seen must have been altered by a fan, the quality was really exceptional and you couldn't tell the difference. Anways, to any of you who read my other review, completely disregard it as this movie is indeed the real deal.

Summary: great movie, awsome seires, retarded fans.
Review: The legendary first Brolly movie finally released on DVD. Too bad by Funimation, but it wasn't a complete dissapointment. Overall, I would say that it IS better than the original VHS "widescreen" version. Anyway, let me break it down.

Audio 2.5/5 - There was nothing particularely wrong with the audio, but once again, Funimation fails to put it in stereo. We only get regular mono for this one yet again, which is really poor for a DVD release.

Video - 5/5 - The video quality was perfect. Funimation this time, has not messed with the picture like they do in some of the episodes. Next, I have to addresss the widescreen issue. All 13 Dragonball Z movies were in fact, created in FULLSCREEN. However, they were first released in Japanese theatres. So Toei Animation cut out some of the picture to make them widescreen. Then, once released on VHS, they took the chopped up widescreen version instead of the original fullscreen. Funimation, however, recieved the originals from Toei, and now, for the first time ever, we can see the original un-chopped movies, which is great. I admit the widescreen versions seem alot better because it makes it feel more like a movie, but the movies were originally fullscreen. If you search around the web you can find screens comapring the DVD with the original vhs widescreen version to see the chopped off difference. So, that's that.

Subtitles - 2/5 - The subtitles is where funimation really lacks on this one. First, I have to address the horrible use of the word "ain't". The lines "I'm not", "won't", and "aren't" are all disgustingly replaced with "ain't". This is not only in-correct for a japanese translation, but it ruins Son Goku's characters. I cringe each time I hear Son-kun say it, and it's used way too much (more so than in other funi releases). The wrule should be, if you can't speak proper english in the first place, do not do the subtitles. They also spell "Saiya-jin" as "saiyan", which is also in-correct. The reason for that can't be because Funimation doesn't like putting in the original terms and japanese nomenclature (because they do use "Son" Goku and add "-san" to the end of names in the subtitles) so this just must be another one of funimations half done jobs. The reason I'm giving such a low rating as well, is because I know Funimation can do better. The last episodes of Dragonball where Son Goku fights Ma Junior in the Tenkaichi Budokai, the subtitles are absolutely flawless. Overall though, they subtitles are easy to read (they're white instead of the standard yellow though).

Story/Action - 5/5 - Movie 8 has one of the greatest stories and also includes a number of humorous moments that sometimes are forgotten about in DBZ (since original Dragonball was more comedy than anything else at first). The action is not dissapointing either, you get to see everyone fight, though there are only a couple signature moves used. Very intense battles though. One thing this movie contains is great character development, specially in Vegeta. The ending, although short, is sweet.

Overall, 3.5/5 stars this one gets. Though the DVD may seem over priced, it's still cheaper than the Japanese VHS because those are not only quite rare, but the shipping is a fortune. But I leave it to the true fan to decide wheather to buy this or not based on my review.

Summary: For DBZ, it's a nice story, but flawed execution.
Review: This had the potential to be one of the better DBZ movies (allowing for the fact that DBZ movies avoid deep material to begin with). The Z-team, after being visited by mysterious aliens, travels with them to another world, where they encounter Paragus and his quiet-seeming son Broly. (Broly, Buroli, derived from Broccoli, and Paragus from Asparagus; Saiyajin names are all associated with vegetables. Yes, that's Toriyama-sensei's normal approach) However, it turns out that Buroli has a psychotic side -- a Super-Saiyajin side who was apparently driven nuts by the ceaseless crying of the baby in the creche next to him when he was young: Kakkaroto, who is known on Earth as Son Goku. Buroli is monstrously powerful and whips all of the Z-team without effort, really.

Some of the sequences -- particularly the grand finale -- are clearly homages to the Saint Seiya movies. Unfortunately, it has picked up some glacial pacing (compared to most DBZ movies) and has some HIDEOUS character violations and really terrible inappropriate humor at times. Thus it just manages to be average.
