Summary: A new fairy-tale legend.
Review: Some of the humor may push the PG envelope a bit, but "Shrek" is one of the most warm-hearted and genuinely funny animated movies to emerge in a LONG time. None of the Disney politically-correct crud formula here. It's offbeat and very winning, with superb voice acting by Myers, Diaz, Lithgow and especially Eddie Murphy, whose donkey almost steals the movie, and in THIS company, that's a major compliment.

I'm going to see it again, and when it hits DVD, it's on my "absolutely MUST buy" list, and there's not a lot of stuff coming out of Hollywood these days I can say that about.

Summary: A Surprisingly Great One
Review: I wasn't too sure that I was going to enjoy this movie, and I grudgingly went along. I was very surprised by it. It does a fantastic job of mixing humor for both kids and adults. The kids will enjoy some of the more obvious humor while the adults will get a kick out of the more subtle jokes. The storyline is good. A vane Lord, who seems to have an unexplained problem with fairy tales, wants to become the perfect King. He cannot, unless he marries a princess. To do so, he must rescue her from a fire-breathing dragon. But a man of his stature can't do this, so he enlists Shrek, a local Ogre. Thus the story begins. Through all the jokes and fun, a simple love story appears, and the movie carries a very good moral. Casting was excellent, in both the major and minor characters. Kids and adults should have no problem enjoying this movie together, as evidenced by the fun and laughter in the theatre that I was in.

Summary: Definitley not for kids
Review: Let me start off by saying that it was not as great as all the hype indicated. Actually it was pretty dull. The only character I liked was Donkey. Everyone else was lame. WARNING FOR PARENTS: As my title states, it is not for kids. There are a lot of sexual refrences and cursing. This is supposed to be a kids movie, right? Instead of making fun of Disney, Dreamworks needs to start taking advice from them on how to make a children's movie. The only reason I gave this movie 3 stars was for donkey. He was hillarious. Wait unitl video.

Summary: Shrek - Good Hearted Family Fun
Review: My wife and I saw Shrek over Memorial Day weekend when a race was in town making theater seating plentiful. We were joined by 6 girls ages 5 - 12, our son - age 8, a friend, age 10 and one other dad. Shrek is a wonderful story with some of the best animation graphics I have ever seen. I was easily absorbed into the film, laughing continuously. Eddie Murphy was hilarious as the donkey and Mike Myers engaging and warm as Shrek. Cameron Diaz made a perfectly spunky princess and John Lithgow equally brilliant as a would-be prince. We enjoyed the film from beginning to end with a hardy hand clap at the end. The film was a little on the short side but nothing really seemed rushed. Matinee times will insure your best bang for the buck. There were some very slight adult overtones in a couple of places which had my wife and I laughing but glancing at the children to make sure it escaped their ears.

Summary: I laughed
Review: Great fun for all of us. I agree that some of the humor may walk the line (like the simpsons), but it is really funny. It isn't the same worn out potty humor of Jim Carrey or Mad TV. I don't laugh much, so my wife was suprised to see me laughing like crazy toward the end of the movie. Everyone in the theater enjoyed the matrix scene and the macarena scene and all the other references to other films. I kind of think that this was the point of a lot of the humor in the movie. For those that watched the movie and don't understand this or have a problem with it, rethink the music you listen to and the software you use. Then just get over it. If shaggy can do it, so can dreamworks.

If you're looking for some type of "masterpiece" movie, I would recommend watching "eyes wide shut". For a very good and refreshing laugh, watch Shrek.

Summary: A Funny Movie With A Happy Ending
Review: This is what a summer movie should be like. Shrek is funny and irreverent and something for the parents to enjoy with the children. There is a lot of "potty humor" and gross out comedy but there isn't anything worse then the kind of stuff children see on Nickelodeon. The director and writers don't talk down to children, much like the best family movies of the past. Some of the jokes work on two different levels. The scene were Donkey (Eddie Murphy) breaks into a James Brown song had parents laughing at the reference and children laughing because of the silliness. The romance is sweet without being overly contrived although the scene comparing Shrek alone at home and the Princess getting ready for her wedding started to slip into a sugary Disney feel.

As for the animation it was fine. It's getting to the point though where producers will have to stop relying on the latest, greatest CGI to dazzle audiences. The animation here wasn't any more impressive then Dinosaurs. The good thing about this film is that it doesn't depend on the graphics to distract from a drab story. The story here is the usual but with enough of a twist to raise it above the norm. You may see the surprise coming though.

Eddie Murphy is hilarious as donkey. He's the typical sidekick comic relief. His blind eye toward Shrek's homeliness is very endearing. Cameron Diaz's character is spunky and sweet and the scene where she spoofs her role in Charlie's Angels (during the kung fu fight scene) got some of the biggest laughs from the audience I saw the film with. Mike Meyers wasn't bad but his Scottish accent was weak, toned down quite a bit from the father he played in So I Married An Axe Murderer although that might be a good thing. Children have to be able to understand him. John Lithgow was great but I couldn't help but think of Dick Solomon, his character from Third Rock From The Sun.

The movie had a lot of heart and the audience I saw it with (full of children and adults) laughed out loud and often, I think that says a lot for a film.

Summary: Garage sell material
Review: Shrek is something you buy at a garage sell for a $1. The animation was wooden (VERY wooden). The language and innuendo was very inappropriate for young children. The plot was had a nice twist with the Princess, but it was still a tired unimaginative plot. This hit me as a vehicle for Jeffery Katzenbergto slam Disney. ... Energies that could have been spent making a great movie were instead spent making a movie full of weak, juvenile humor. I should walk out and got my money back on this one, but I kept waiting for it to get better -- it didn't.
