Summary: Too dumb for words
Review: Okay, I gave "Spriggan" that one star because of the animation and soundtrack. THAT'S IT!!Everything else about this film is redundantly boring. It's not an action-movie, it's a DUMB action movie. Big difference there. Seriously, a good action movie needs to have a plot and characters that are interesting, as well as good action scenes. "Spriggan," granted has good action scenes......for the first ten-minutes of the film. Then the whole thing goes straight to hell. We are introduced to all this mumbo-jumbo about how Noah's Ark (or "Noah" as it is lovingly called by the three foot tall blue bad-guy who is a rip-off from "Akira," complete with mental powers) will change the world and all this other [stuff]about why we should all care. ... There are no redeeming features in this film. Everything is so lifeless and boring, nothing fits. God damn it, I want my action!! THERE IS NOTHING GOOD YOU CAN GAIN FROM WATCHING THIS!! If you want action, anime, style and substance done better, watch "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust." As for "Spriggan," well let us never speak of it again. -RW (P.S. Summary: Worth Watching
Review: Spriggan is an excellent anime, and more than worth watching in the theater rather than waiting for it on video. The plot is fairly standard SF anime fare: the hero is a high school student who works for a mysterious organization that tries to prevent ancient artifacts from falling into the wrong hands. He has to work to protect the artifact and the scientists who are studying it from the evil clutches of those who would use it destructively. This provides plenty of excuses for exciting chases, dramatic fight scenes, interestingly portrayed psychic powers, and fabulous displays of cosmic power. Everything in the movie is well done. The action scequences are exciting and well placed, and incorporate their fair share of interestingly designed weapons and gadgets. The drawing is high quality, and the animation is a good example of the modern mixture of cell and digital animation. The character designs are expecially well done, which you'd expect of a movie in which Katsuhira Otomo is heavily involved. As well made as it is, though, Spriggan simply isn't a great movie. That's not to say that there's anything wrong with it, as it's a very well made movie. It simply lacks the special spark that defines the difference between craftsmanship and genius.

Summary: You Want Action? You'll Get Action!
Review: First time I have heard about this movie is from my friend who had a demo DVD that had footage from Spriggan. The scene had the main character escaping from the enemy on the streets of Turkey. The way the hero was dodging and kicking butts, it was cool. So here I am, writing this review for Spriggan. What is Spriggan? They are specially trained elite agents, working for Arcam, a secret organization off to uncover Noah's Ark. There's another secret organization which wants to find Noah's Ark, and use it for their own "evil" purposes. The action for this movie is cool in a future realistic kind of way. I get so excited when guy A hits guy B, its just cool, the look of it and the sound effects. It's definitely up there with the action of Ninja Scroll and Samurai X. The animation is good too, especially when the action starts to take place. Did I mention I like the action in this movie. Don't get me wrong, the story is good too, but the action, man.... Don't want to overhype the action or movie itself, so I'll end it here and let you guys decide if you want to watch it or not. Action.

Summary: weak plot, useless dialog, and a horrible ending
Review: Plot:
The hero tries to stop the United States from obtaining alien technology. U.S. forces hit the hero with everything they have, but the hero cannot be killed. A little boy super villian takes about 30 minutes to tell the hero that he doesn't really like the United States and was really just using the United States to to help him get the alien technology so he could destroy the world. After the little boy super villian finishes talking. The hero stops the little boy super villian. The end. Positive:
1. The anime has fluid motion.
2. There are quite a few action scenes. Negative:
1. There is actually a lot of talking scenes, but its meaningless dialog that adds little to the nearly non-existent story.
2. The hero literally cannot die no matter how much the bad guys shoot him. Bullets, electricity, explosives, etc. merely stun him. He cannot be killed.
3. The ending is very drawn out with a very long conversation between the hero and the top villian. The action and graphics seem to go down hill towards the end too.
4. A lot of the scenes appear dark and the graphics aren't as good as more recent anime. Overall, Spriggan had some decent action, but there are quite a few slow scenes and Spriggan is not worth watching once the little boy super villian shows up.

Summary: Sad to be an American...
Review: ok, maybe the title of the review is a bit over the top. i might not be "sad", exactly. i am-irritated.
"a reviewer" the name given by a previous reviewer exemplifies the reasons i am "irritated" to be an american. basically, i am a fan of "anime" NOT cartoons. an example of a cartoon to me would be: roughnecks, titan a.e., batman, static shock, etc.
the "negatives" given by "a reviewer" shows that he/she is a fan of "cartoons". to address them point by point:
>meaningless dialogue-that comment shows that "a reviewer" does NOT understand how "animation" is used in japan. "anime" is/are movies. big budget/production feature length movies. even in most american produced action movies (which is essentially what spriggan was) there is a dialogue, that rarely ever fits or has meaning. my point, however, is that it is a feature length film not a saturday morning cartoon.
>hero couldnt die-one word, willing suspension of disbelief. ok that was four but you see the point. furthermore, the character did NOT get shot or blown up. he got shot at and explosions were near him but not on him. this isn't rare. i suggest that bruce willis' character in die hard to more damage than this character and let's not mention the A-Team, Bad Boys, etc. how many american movies do cars explode AND flip and the drivers are ok.
>drawn out ending-again it is a feature length film. therefore, maybe it is harder, as in most action movies, to wrap everthing up in a saturday morning fashion.
>bad graphics-if those are bad graphics i'd like to see what you consider "good" graphics. i watch an obscene amount of anime (maybe i shouldnt admitt that, lol) and i can't think of any american (or any other country besides japan) producing anything better than spriggan.
in conclusion, i think it is our, americans, insistence on everything being "fast/simple" that we lack the ability to appreciate anything that asks us to think or concentrate for more than 20 mins (the standard length of a sit-com/tv show).

Summary: Raiders of the Other Lost Ark
Review: I don't know anime, but I know what I like. I didn't find much to like about Spriggan.
A young Japanese Spriggan (a sort of solider with extrodinary skills) is sent to Turkey, where Noah's Ark is being excavated at Mt Ararat. It's not the wooden boat everyone thought it was, it seems. It is an alien spacecraft, capable of controlling weather and creating new life. If it fell into the wrong hands it could mean a second flood, an ice-age, the end of the world perhaps. Unfortunately for the Spriggan and the archaeologists involved, the "wrong hands" are everywhere. American interests, let by Colonel MacDougal (a robotically enhanced boy who believes he was sent by God) want the Ark for themselves so that they may "control everything" (the film's words, not mine). Violence, intrigue and mystery follows. Has this young Spriggan got what it takes to take this on threat and to save the world from another deluge?
Though I do get the gist of it, the plot was hard to follow. The more I think about it, the more it falls apart. I found the Noah's Ark concept/interpretation ridiculous, and I'm a fan of Erik Von Daniken (the king of farfetched archaeological theories)! The characters motivations are not always clear, and it would have been nice if they were fleshed out a bit. (Colonel MacDougal's past, for example.) As it is, I'm not always sure why the tensions and violence (or even some of the friendships) between all the characters are there.
Though there are some upsides to this film. Despite the silly plot, it's actually got a subtext or two. If you know the story of the Ark and the Flood then you'll know that Noah is a survivor, through his deeds he preserved mankind. There are some parallels between Noah and the main character. Yu Ominae is a survivor too, and preserves mankind through preventing the Ark . He survived his violent, bloody childhood, he survives many attempts to kill him. The boy colonel calls him a "cockroach", a species that can survive nuclear blasts. Also, if you check the Bible for the story of Noah, it mentions that the time before the Flood were very violent. Times before the excavation of the Ark in Spriggan too are very violent. How very interesting. I don't know what the point was exactly, but little parallels like these kept me diverted from the plot holes for a while.
The visuals are slick, and the people fairly realistic looking for anime (you could tell the Japanese apart from the Americans). I particularly liked the look of the city in Turkey. The look of the Ark was reasonable too. I loved the look of the stone tablet floating in the air. It had that look of those faded photographs you find in old archaeological books/documentaries.
Worth a look at least once, I guess. I'd rather watch a trashy anime than a trashy Hollywood action film. The crummy parts you can always sit and laugh at with your friends. That's always fun.

Review: I really liked Spriggan. I disgree to other reviewers who rated this bad. Com'n. You just gave you're roots away and can't even enjoy a simple action movie. This is based as an western movie not much related to other animes. The art is nice, the action, etc. A solid addition to add to your dvd anime collection.
