Summary: Very Good
Review: Spirited away is a Japanese animation about a 10 year old girl who travels with her parents to a new house. On the way they discover what seems to be an abandoned theme park, which the parents explore. It turns out to be a magic world, in which the young girl has to use her own rescources to initially survive and then to rescue her parents.

The film is one of the most succesful Japanese films to be made in recent times. It is no surprise as not only is the story involving but the animation is beautiful. Rather than using computer generated graphics the film consists of the old style animation in which drawings are used to create the scene and movement of the characters. Each scene is carefully painted and the detail showing such things as the growth of moss on steps is painstaking.

The film is also interesting as it is based on a mythology which is Japanese rather than Western. Whilst there are a couple of characters called witches, the Magic World is Japanese and features the eight million gods of the Buddist mythology. Somehow this makes the plot of the film totally unpredictable and no cliched. With Western story conventions, characters behave in stereotyped ways. Witches are evil, fairies are good. In this film the motives and actions of the characters are far more complex.

After seeing the film some time ago and thinking about it the one thing which comes back though is the beauty of the animation. Even the closing stills are little works of art in themselves.

Summary: Funny you should say that...
Review: ...this movie was like Alice in Wonderland written while on acid... well, Lewis Carroll WAS on acid while writing that.
Anyway, this movie is great. Probably the best animated film I've ever seen, definitely blows away just about everything Disney has ever done.

Summary: Spirited Away- now one of my FAVORITE films! =)
Review: I am a crazy Studio Ghibli fan. Once I went to a theater near me for my birthday, to see Spirited Away, I absolutely LOVED it! It was a little bit confusing at times, but I'm sure that once I buy it on DVD and watch it over and over and over again till I've memorized it, there won't be anymore confusing scenes. This is one of the best movies ever, and anyone who doesn't like it or doesn't get it just doesn't have an imagination! <3

Review: As someone who saw Princess Mononoke 4 times in theatres before it hit mainstream awareness, helped petition for the improvements in the DVD release, and watched it at least another 5 times at home, to say that I was looking forward to seeing this film is an extreme understatement. After a year of desperately trying to find a local showing, I finally just got to see it, and I left the movie in a daze, in disbelief that I could actually dislike a Miyazaki work.

This movie is beautifully crafted in terms of its animation, yes, but it's a disjointed collage of crazy imagery and characters, with little rhyme and even less reason behind any of it. Think Japanese version of Alice in Wonderland. Made by an insane person. On acid.

I'm a big Japanese film fan, I love intelligent anime, and I thought I was a big Miyazaki fan, but "Spirited Away" was a huge disappointment. However, I will grant that a big part of its confusion might be due to cultural translation loss, and that I personally just don't "get it", since so many people seem to adore this film. Ah well. However, I did hear one person comment in the line leaving the theater, "Ok, what in God's name was THAT!?", and the group erupted in laughter, so I know I can't be entirely alone in this thinking, at any rate.

1 star for the lovely animation, an extra star for benefit of the doubt since the film seems so universally hyped, but that's sadly all. To me, "Spirited Away" is just an incoherent if beautiful mess. If you're not big on silly things like comprehensible plot and characters, or need a cheap alternative for a narcotic fix, this film will probably be worth the time and money for you. Otherwise, spare yourself the disappointment and stupor...Timothy Leary had nothing on this crazy movie's trip. :)

Summary: Great!
Review: This is a fantastic film. A fan of anime, I find it supremely hard to find anime films released in theaters in America. I was thrilled to see that the Miyazaki made this film. It has a great story line, and any fan of anime is sure to love it.I was extremely surprised to see that Disney helped in it's production. Voice cast is superb, and the sweet sugaring that Disney tends to do with films is surprisingly at a minimum. See it!

Summary: Spirited Away
Review: This film will spirit you away into another world for two hours. It is a gem. The animation is breathtaking, not with splashy razzle dazzle, but with the simple depiction of gentle ocean waves, or the way things look when submerged under shallow water while one moves over them, or the way a human face reacts and registers emotions. Miyazaki's love for his craft shines through bright and clear in this film. Anyon, of any age, can enjoy this film.

Summary: Wow... that's all I can say...
Review: ...It is awesome. Now I saw the Disney, English dubbed version, and there was a lot of unnecessary stating-of-the-obvious involved, but if you don't pay attention to that and watch the movie, it really is quite stunning. I especially loved the ocean landscapes and the abandoned park. It was eerie and pretty at the same time. I didn't think that Hayao Miyazaki could top his own Princess Mononoke, but he definitely did, both at the box office and in the film itself.

Spirited Away is certainly more kidsy than Princess Mononoke, because the main character is a ten-year-old and the film is decidedly less bloody and battle-driven.

In an nutshell: this movie is beautifully made, has a good message, and will entrance kids, teenagers, and adults alike. Go see it!!!

(One more thing: if you have seen Princess Mononoke, don't try and compare the two films. I told my good friend and anime-fanatic that I was having trouble deciding which was better, and he solved all of my problems by telling me: "You can't. They're too different." Different, yes, but both awesome in their own respects.)

Summary: Terrific Movie!
Review: I have seen and even own the movie Princess Mononoke which is also by this prominent Japanese film-maker. I thought I would try this to see if it was as good as that movie. It was better. This is a great movie with enough action in it for guys and a love story and breathtaking backgrounds for the girls. I've asked my family members to get it for me on the next gift-giving holiday that the VHS is out on. This movie is truly a five-star video in all ways.
