Summary: Good movie, but not great. Don't buy the hype, rent it first
Review: Having not seen the movie in theaters, I was excited by the talk of a great epic animation. But I must say I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and as for the animation that I have seen it is a solid flick. But the hype that people are giving it is not deserved. There are moments of breathtaking animation, but it is then followed by what I would consider "nothing special animation". My second disappointment was that the story wasn't all that great. And this is coming from a person who likes epic stories. The movie just seemed to slow down when I needed a bit of action. Also the story just wasn't all that compelling. I don't know if this was due to american translation, which it might very well be. Anyways, I guess I would sum it as this: It is a good movie and entertaining, you should see it as it is a solid quality movie, not great, but good. I just don't know if I would buy it, I say rent it and make up your own mind.

Summary: This movie is beautiful!
Review: Three years were spent into making this. They were not wasted! This is simply the best animated film I've ever seen. I'm 14 years old, for those of you who don't already know, but this movie is one I'm not too young to review. The animation is spectacular; the Great Forest Spirit changing into the nightwalker is simply not to be believed! Everything is amazing. Princes Mononoke is gloroius, glamorous, and invigorating.

Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of animated violence and gore. Decapitations and mutilations are indeed present--maybe it should be pushed to an R. It may look like any kid's cartoon, but it's longer, bloodier, and a MILLION times better!

Summary: A warning....
Review: For the love of god do not buy this movie. I cannot stress that point well enough. While I understand how the fantasy elements may have wooed other reviewers, for me, this movie ended my fascination with Japanime. From the mindless plot to the super-environmentalist charachters this movie is a dud all the way through. If you rent or buy Japanime looking for action and violence, (things that I am sure many people think of when they hear "Japanime") not a sappy plot and some of the most insipid ideas ever, you should stay away from this movie. But, if you're looking for something that really is that laden with mystique and faeries and other annoying pieces of fantasy lore, buy this movie. So, let's recap shall we? If you like action, like me, this is the most God-Awful creation ever to find its way into your VCR. If you like fantasy, i'm sure you'll love this. Just a warning.

Summary: Mononoke rises above Hollywood
Review: What I particularly enjoyed about this film is the level to which the supporting characters are developed. For example, the "villain," voiced by Minnie Driver, is profoundly realized when compared to a typical ho-hum, 1-dimensional 'Hollywood' villain. Her actions contain -gasp- motivation! She acts on behalf of her people, to the detriment of the natural environment. Is it logical to destroy a forest and it's inhabitants in order to be prosperous? This is the question that Princess Mononoke asks.

Summary: Complex, compelling fable
Review: Miyazaki's best film (which is saying something, when you consider the excellence of his previous works), a complex, nuanced fantasy that avoids the childish "nature good, man bad" parables favored by our own, shallower, entertainment industries. Visually stunning, but it is ultimately the power of the story and characters, caught in a struggle they cannot control, which makes this a masterpiece. No Disney film has ever approached the moral seriousness of this work.

Summary: Outstanding Anime!
Review: This tale was craftfully woven, riveting, and powerful. Although the whole plot seemed quite far-fetched at first, Miyazaki, once again, pulled off making a crazy storyline believable. This movie was purely excellent. Totally reccomended for otaku and non-otaku alike.
