Summary: Great version of an anime classic.
Review: As a movie that changed the industry, AKIRA is one of the biggest stepping stones in Japanimation. This DVD exemplifies the beauty of Japanese animation as it provides a sharp digital version of a movie that is made great by its amazingly detailed art. Definitely a must in any anime fan's collection.

Summary: The Ultimate Anime Movie
Review: I have wiated forever for this Special DVD to be released... I had to settle with the makers other releases "Ghost In The Shell" but with the re-transfer and anamorphic widescreen format it will be a vivid and detailed as the later "Ghost In The Shell" The years have not dulled the imagery and poetry to the tech/urban landscape portayed in almost every frame. An mention in almost every sci-fi directors list of infuences "Akira" still affects movies of the future such as "The Matrix" and its sequels and most cyber-punk movies to be. I highly advise splurging and getting the Limited edition!

Review: I currently have the LD of this awesome movie and considering I paid $... for it, $... is chump change. From the description, it seems to have all the features that the Criterion Edition LD had. (I didnt seem the comic book scans listed though..) Anamorphic format is definitely a plus! Get this disc!!

Summary: This is the one DVD that Anime fans have been waiting for
Review: Akira is the seminal Anime movie in America. Period. Most fans can tell you the first time they saw it the same way that the previous generation can tell you where they were when they heard JFK was shot. It was the first feature length Anime to be really popular in America, introducing a new, highly kinetic and interesting genre of entertainment to American culture. The results of Akira's popularity can be seen in the continuing popularity of Anime in America today.

This release is the first time it has been available on DVD. The only other way to view the movie until now, besides a VHS copy of course, was to get one of the Criterion LVDs (which are pretty hard to find in decent condition), or to have a VCD imported from out of country. Only the Criteron LVDs had any decent special features or documentaries, and being so cumbersome and difficult to maintain they tend to degrade in quality pretty quickly. VCDs use a higher compression ratio than LVDs, but they are still VHS quality at best, and the movie alone still takes up two discs. This DVD release is has a "finally-factor" that is off the scale.

The movie itself is a semi-post-apocalyptic drama taking place in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019. Kaneda and his motorcycle gang are misfits and outcasts, and Tetsuo, the smallest of the crew, moreso than the rest. After a chance encounter with a mysterious child Tetsuo begins to manifest powers beyond those of any normal human. What follows is an exploration of man's potential for evolution and how science is perverting and exploiting that potential, even though it is at a loss to adequately explain it.

Most peope who watch the movie for the first time have a hard time following it, in part because the style of the movie is simply so engrossing that it becomes difficult to pay attention to the storyline, but also because the storyline itself is somewhat convoluted. One must understand that Akira the Anime was adapted from Akira the Manga (comic book); an extremely long and complex story which could not possibly have been faithfully conveyed in the running time of a movie. If you are interested in the story I highly recommend that you check out the Manga as well (Amazon carries the newest release of the collected story in phone-book sized editions). With or without the full back-story though Akira stands high in the echelon of important Anime. This release is a must-have for any fan of Animation, Anime, Culturally important movies, or just of good movies period.

Summary: FINALLY!
Review: I can't even began to think how to express how freakin' happy I am to see this DVD finally come to light. In the past you were subjugated to see either a subbed or dubbed video of the epic anime. Not has one anime (with the exception to Ghost in a Shell) has a movie had a so intricate plot with great characters and out standing graphics. Anyone would just buy this DVD for merely the movie but there are many treats to add to it. Now there are two options, a oringinal English subbed version or a newly dubbed English version for you people that hated the first translation. This new dub follows almost word for word of the original script. The footage is a totally new transfer from the original movie negative (probably the second best transfer compared to a digital transfer) which means clarity, clarity, clarity! THX now supports the movie adding more to the already awesome soundtrack and effects. So DVD's charge for a lot for a 2 disc DVD and on one disc is susually the movie and the second extra stuff. In the past the extra stuff has been [less than amusing]...This however gives numerous extras that could bring tears to anyone's eyes. It contains "The Making of Akira", An interview with the director and writers, and much more. The price is right, the goodies are great and the movie is legendary...what more could you ask for from a DVD? I highly recommend you buy this fine work of art and enjoy it for many years.

Summary: Not for geeks.
Review: This is it, the best animation quality ever, by a huge margin. The only other feature to come close is Ghost in the shell, which had a better story, and focussed on mood and art more. Featuring unparalleled fluidity in both the in-focus actor and the background elements, Akira seems to have a higher frame rate than other animation. I first heard of it in Germany, where, at the time, no one over twelve was caught dead watching cartoons, this one was different though, on par in its acceptance by the in-crowd with Blade-Runner.This is not a film reserved for geeks or guys who are still into Transformers. Akira is for the intelligent movie connoisseur. In Japan Akira enjoys an almost religious following. It is for animated movies what Bob Marley is for Reggae. For readers of this critique the only word of caution is that it is a movie that is not as simple as what we get in the US.

Summary: A Classic - Must have for anime fans
Review: To put it simply, Akira is awesome. That should be reason enough for you to buy it, but let me explain more. The story is excellent; it puts emphasis on man's potential. Basically, the whole movie says that man has enormous power that can be used for good or for evil.

It's not quite the action film that you've probably seen being advertised, but it still packs more than enough action. The animation is superb, and still stands out today.

I was drawn into the plot and the childish "super-humans" were intriguing. To restate what I said before, Akira is awesome. I'll defintely be buying the DVD.

Summary: Simply the BEST...
Review: This was the first Anime film that I had the pleasure to view. My very first experience with anime was watching the old "Starblazers" series on TV. I enjoyed that show, but it seems like nothing compared to Akira.

Light years beyond anything that I viewed previously, seeing this sumptuous film in the theatre was an indescribably wonderful experience, it blew me away. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of animation that has steadily grown in popularity in my country. Finally, this great film will be in a DVD format, it is about time! The artwork and story of Akira will astound anyone, not just anime fans. Buy this DVD.
