Description:
The 13-part Banner of the Stars (2000, a.k.a. Celestial Banner) is the sequel to Crest of the Stars (1999); both of them are based on the science fiction novels of Hiroyuki Morioka. Banner picks up the story three years after the conclusion of the first series. Human noble Jinto Lin continues to declare he will always remain at the side of Abh princess Lafiel, although she generally treats him with scorn. The war between the Abh and humanity is heating up again, and Lafiel is now Deca-Commander of the spaceship Basroil; as supply officer, Jinto follows her into their first battle. Banner of the Stars suffers from the same weaknesses as Crest: the filmmakers spent too much time inventing weird Abh words and runes, and far too little developing the characters and choreographing what should be dramatic battle sequences. (Rated 13 and older: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon
