Summary: Greatest anime of the decade - worst transfer in awhile.
Review: I'm not really into anime in a big way. NGE was so impressive and unusual that it became the first anime series I bought in several years.

I was so happy to finally get a subtitled version of this show. Then I saw that ADV have done to this disc.

First off, they've digitally manipulated frames in this show to add in really cheap looking English lettering. They've even done it to the credits, and chosen terrible lettering to do it in. Maybe you'll appreciate this - I for one couldn't stand it, and don't buy into any Eyes Wide Shut style tampering. Especially as it means that ADV will have put the video through some process that will change its quality.

Then you just see how badly it's been transferred. Extremely muted colors that shift, disturbing artifacts here and there, terrible black levels.

It looks like muck.

Review: I've suffered through countless viewings of bad video releases for this series. The DVD is awesome! I hope they release the rest of the series soon! This is like seeing it for the first time all over again! YES, it's the BEST anime series EVER...

Summary: Eva is the Best
Review: Evangelion is the definitive anime of all time, anyone who says anything otherwise is not right in the head! I don't care about the format, the series is good anytime, anywhere! The characters, animation is great, it's all good! And the person that couldn't understand the series is the dumbest guy of all time! Eva is the best series ever made in the entire history of the world. Any anime fan who knows anything knows that! By the way, GOD IS IN HIS HEAVEN, ALL'S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD.

Summary: Maybe the best of Anime
Review: After a year looking anime series, I found the best in its genre. Evangelion shows an apocaliptical world in a real way, different from other movies or anime series. All details are perfect and the story behind the scenes is amazing. 5 stars in it's genre.

Summary: Buy only if is your first time watching evangelion....
Review: I own the whole 13 vhs set, the subtitled one. I love theseries and was really looking forward to the dvd release. I have toagree that the video quality is not to dvd standards. It doesn't have that crisp look you associate with dvd titles. I Also own the series in the VCD format and would have to say the graphics rate somewhere between VHS and VCD quality, but way below DVD quality. Even the AnimeNation web site is saying the laserdisc version looks crisper than this dvd release. So if you own the vhs version, wait and see if they correct this.

On the other side, the different translations were ok, although the english dubbing just plain ( ). The spanish one is pretty good, translation and all. I dont know french, but as far as the voice selections, its ok. The only one that doesn't cut it is the english one. They could have picked better voice talent for the kids and GENDO, pleeeeaaase, the guy has a misterious DEEP voice, totally butchered in the english dubbing. Overall, is a good buy for someone new to Evangelion, but for EVA fans, is a 'wait until the vhs tape burns down'. END

Summary: Great series..dvd format needs a little work.
Review: First off, I love this series. It's agot a good balance of character development and action. Not too swamped liked Key Metal Idol in subtlety or overly action packed like Fist of the North Star. The dvd trasfer isn't as bad as some reviewers make it out to be. I've seen much worse such as in Highlander or Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. If I were to rate this dvd transfer from 1-10 with 10 being perfect, I'd say this is an 7.5-8. Batman would've been a 5. There are four language tracks on the disc. I've watched the Japanese and English tracks. I must say that the English tracks are pretty bad. The choice in voice actors except maybe for Misato leave much to be desired. Shinji sounds more bored than nonchalant most of the time which is not how the character is in Japanese. I'd stick with watching the series in Japanese to get the full mood of the series and maybe watch the English if you're just bored one day. The menu system on the disc is okay although it has no really big bells and whistles to make you stand up and notice. I'd say get the disc just to watch the great Evangelion series and try not to place to much importance on the discs presentation which others discs might have spoiled you with.

Summary: The Eva DVD is good, but it could be better.
Review: Evangelion was the first anime series I ever saw and I loved it. I saw nth generation subs of the original Japanese verison, though, so the quality wasn't that great. The DVDs are nice, but there are a few technical difficulties. I have a PC-DVD player, so maybe it's just something weird with my software, but if you set subtitles to "On," and language to "Japanese," then go back to the main menu and launch an episode, it forgets you set the language to "Japanese." I haven't seen the VHS version, as one reviewer has, so I don't know if the quality of the video is as bad as he/she claims. One thing that avid fans may notice is the amount of English in the text that appears in the video. Having seen the subs, the only English that was in it was what was originally there, I think the video source for the DVDs comes from the English dub release with a lot of the actual text changed, but I could be wrong (I've never seen more than 5 seconds of the dub because I gagged at the English voice actors so I didn't really get to see any parts where the text may have been changed). You can also see where ADV put in their own shots of the episode names and it looks a little cheesy compared to the original flash of "Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode # Title" that GAINAX had originally. The subtitle font is in yellow, sometimes looks a little fuzzy and has a couple minor typographical errors ("7:5%" vs. "7.5%" for instance), but these may have existed in the original subtitled VHS tapes (they look different from the ones that I've seen). So, the conversion to DVD could have been better. If you are a stickler for DVD perfection and a die hard Evangelion fan, you may be somewhat disappointed, but I for one am satisfied. I'm just happy they're finally releasing the series on DVD; can't wait for the next volumes!

Summary: DVD version is bellow standard
Review: I am an avid fan of Evangelion and was eagerly awaiting the DVD release of the series. Unfortunatly whoever was in charge of this disc at ADV films simply butchered it. The video quality is way bellow DVD standards. There are lots of convertion artifacts and the worse problem since to be a convergence issue which gives the video a dated look (similar to looking at a really old color TV set)IMHO VHS actually look better than this. Evangelion is my favorite anime series but this DVD simply made me sick. My only hope is that ADV films will correct the problem in future releases.

Summary: Prepare yourself for an unsurpassed experience in Anime
Review: Neon Genesis Evangelion, is, without doubt the most praised, most in-depth and most popular anime series ever created. The viewer, and a young boy are thrown into a confusing world of amazing technologies, and intruiging characters. Only as the series unfolds, can you fully appreciate the intricate and complex storyline, which keeps you fixated, and enthralled to the very end. I have never experienced any series like it, animated or not. It is impossible to explain fully, it must be watched from start to end to be fully appreciated. I would reccommend this to anyone who enjoys in-depth anime or storylines with complex characters, plot twists and, of course, the beautiful Japanese animation. I can't wait to get the rest of these on DVD. A MUST-SEE! ;)

Summary: Eva leaves a mark as big as the second impact
Review: What can be said about Evengelion that hasn't already been said by a multitude fans over the internet, and various other media. Not much, really. So I won't dribble on about the various types of symbolic meaning, decipher the various occurances, twist and turns in the plot, or even explain the show's some what cryptic ending. Instead, all I'll point out(though I don't really need to, to all those concerned) is that Evangelion is an anime series that has left a mark on the anime world as big as the second impact, and will be the yard stick for many an anime show to follow in it's footsteps. The basic story is that in the 21st century, the world has been utterly decimated. Creatures called angels are out to destroy what's left of it. Only a small group of teenagers, piloting giant robots called evas stand in their way. Sounds simple, but it ain't. Animation is spectacular, incorporating mecha designs that make such classic giant robot shows like Robotech(Macross) look almost ancient. The character backgrounds are so mentally and emotionally real, they push the story to almost addictive proportions. As for the story, well, it's not a series where you can just skip an episode or two, but given it's quality, that's unlikely to happen. A must for anime fans, or anyone looking for something thick to sink their teeth into. A classic.
