Summary: Extremely funny but not for young kids
Review: I watched this movie with my husband and we both really liked it. I am a cartoom-movie fan so I especially liked it because it was unusual and funny, but still a nice fairy tale and very well drawn and animated. The animation is actually absolutely brilliant, it really looks more like a movie than a cartoon!

I think some kids can watch this movie and enjoy the fairy tale aspect, but on the other hand, I think that some kids around 7 and 8 won't get, as one reviewer objected, some of the jokes, which are actually not targeted for that age, but more for a late teen and adult audience. I would not say the jokes are downright dirty, some have a double meaning but they are not vulgar or offensive and I don't see the need to get offended. I would not buy it specifically for a kid, but it is a movie that the whole family can watch together.

It has so much content. I feel sorry for people who don't own a DVD Rom drive.

I've seen the future of DVD content. Other companies should follow Shrek's example.

Summary: Shrek is not all Drek!!
Review: The first part of this film showing the title character Shrek and his many ogre ways (killing, eating, and scaring) along with the lampooning of all favorite childhood fairytale characters from the Three Little Pigs to the Gingerbread Man (lampooning Disney in general), was all great fun. Up to that point, its a pretty good film. However, when Shrek saves the princess from the dragon, it get's sappy and predictable from there. The CGI animation is top notch and the voiceovers are excellent (Eddie Murphy/Donkey was a little annoying). Overall, it is a nice family film only to be seen once. The critics were too generous to this film. I was hoping Shrek could go back to his ogre ways and really do some maiming, scaring etc...

Summary: One of the best animations in ages
Review: This excellent animated feature from Dreamworks is basically a swipe at rivals Disney. It turns the fairytale story on its head, with the hero being a big, ugly but amicable ogre (Mike Myers). With his sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy) he goes off to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) in order to reclaim his land back from Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), which has been overrun by fairytale beasts.

'Shrek' is most fun when taking a stony-faced literal look at the fairytale world - i.e. the three blind mice carry canes, Snow White isn't easy despite living with seven men and there's also a wonderful gingerbread man that yells 'eat me' at his tormentors. The distraction of toilet humour is, unfortunately, to be expected in such movies. Also good is the acting, with Eddie Murphy having the time of his life. In fact, 'Shrek' is worth watching for his performance alone. The big name advertising for the movie does beg the question though, of where is animation headed? The answer is, that the producers wanted to capitalise on its winning formula of good jokes and winning animation, where you can literally see each blade of grass rustling in the wind. Most importantly, it's a movie that both adults and children will enjoy, which is always a treat amongst most of today's animated fare.

Even so, the light-rock soundtrack doesn't always fit and sometimes you're left feeling whether 'Shrek' is intentionally modern. Plus there's the obvious comparisons to the 'Toy Story' movies, which could hardly be bettered by many movies, let alone another animated one. Saying that, 'Shrek' really is excellent, a break from tradition and its slightly bitter asides will be loved by adults.

Review: A very clever and funny movie. This move was not marketed towards children. It's parents who assume all animated movies are for children that are upset. It's rated "PG" parental guidence. If it were a movie explicitly for children, it wouldn't have been made to hold a PG rating.

Review: You'd have to be an ogre not to like this movie. This is one of the most delightful, visually stunning movies I've ever seen since The Wizard of Oz. We've owned the DVD about a week now and I've watched this movie - and laughed my (behind) off - about ten times. Buy this movie!...

Summary: It's a shame so many kids have already seen this.
Review: I don't own this dvd. My little brother borrowed it from a friend, and I watched it with him and my other little brothers. I know I shouldn't be reviewing, since I don't own this, but watching it made me so mad, and I want you to know why. I'm upset because the movie uses dirty jokes to be funny and claims to be a kids' film. Sometimes dirty jokes can be funny, I know that, but when you're a little kid you don't know what they mean or why they're funny. After one punchline one of my brothers turned around as if to ask me what it meant. That made me sick. It makes me sick how people make movies they say are for kids and then put dirty, even mean, material in them. Don't moviemakers know how sensitive and easily influenced kids are? I'm a 21-year-old college guy and know better!

Review: I love this movie. I saw it first in the cinema with my best friend (we didn't stop laughing the whole time), then when i was visiting my cousins we watched it 5 times in 2 days. It is great for kids and adults. HAS TO be the best movie of the year. I love Shrek!

Summary: There should be a higher rating than 5 stars
Review: This has got to be the best and most fascinating movie made. The computer animation is fantastic. I have watched this movie every day since we got it two days after Christmas. And I haven't tired of it yet (and I'm in the over 40 age group). It's a complete pick-me-up. I love all of the characters, especially Donkey. I also liked the fact that after the Princess' kiss from her true love she did not remain the beautiful Princess. Finally - a happy ending story that doesn't feature beautiful "Barbie" type people. Granted I think this is more a movie for older kids and adults, but small kids will like the cute, lovable talking donkey and Shrek even if they don't understand some of the content. The movie does have several good lessons to teach kids and that's to not judge people by their looks and what the true meaning of being a friend is. How anyone can give this movie less than 4 stars I cannot understand when you consider the imagination, the technology, the hard work the makers put into this movie. This should be a classic and I'll continue to watch this every day if I can. I don't think this movie can be topped!

Review: Note to Disney: that noise you hear behind you is the footsteps of Dreamworks as they catch up to you...

In a very short time, the brains behind Dreamworks SKG has established the studio near or at the top of the animation industry. In a monumental leap since the above average "Prince of Egypt," Dreamworks unleashed "Shrek" -- an action- and humor-filled fantasy/adventure whose hero is, well, a little unorthodox.

Shrek (Mike Myers) is an ogre who uses his hideousness to keep people out of "his" swamp. He unwillingly takes on a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy) as his sidekick as they journey to free a princess (Cameron Diaz) from a fire-breathing dragon. Along the way, they manage to have a lot of fun with the traditional nursery rhymes and bedtime stories that most of us heard when we were children.

Unfortunately, they also have a little too much fun with double-entendres and body noises, which makes this a film which parents should watch with their children (if they even allow their children to watch). Without a doubt, it is not the animation that Walt Disney would have imagined in the 1950s. Rather, it is a cleverly designed tale which engages the minds of adults while tickling the visual senses of the younger generations. (The Gingerbread Man/Muffin Man scene alone makes this movie worth watching).

In the realm of DVDs, "Shrek" also establishes itself as a cut above. The menus are incredibly interactive, and even entertaining. The several features about the making of "Shrek" are definitely worth watching, and the "karaoke" video (which appeared after the credits in the theatrical release) is available for viewing by itself. This is definitely worth adding to any DVD collection.
