Review: I did not watch this movie because it was a "kids" movie and this morning I popped it in and could not stop watching. I thought I would just watch a few minutes--I didn't leave the room for even one second. I had to see what was going to happen next.
Shrek was so lovable and the princess was not your normal princess. She was rough and tough. I was shocked when she turned into an Ogre. That was the LAST thing I would have expected to happen!!!!
The short "king" was hilarious!!!
And I really enjoyed the fire breathing dragon falling in love with the donkey. Who would have thought........
Go see this movie--buy this movie--ENJOY!!!!!!!!!

Summary: Improbably cute
Review: I was prepared to dislike this movie -- bodily-function humor? Self-conscious pop soundtrack? Eddie Murphy voicing a smart-aleck animal sidekick *yet again*?

But "Shrek" proved to be both funny and sweet. Its occasional fits of saccharine cuteness are tempered with absurdity, and its moments of crudity with genuine wit. I haven't had so much fun watching a movie in years.

Summary: Shrek: Worthwhile If Not Memorable
Review: SHREK is a computer-animated movie with a scenario somewhat
like that of the old ROCKY & BULLWINKLE "Fractured Fairy
Tales".

Lord Farquaad (voiced by John Lithgow), the sawed-off ruler of
some kingdom in a land far away and long ago, decides to
perform "ethnic cleansing" and get rid of all the fairy-tale
creatures in his land.

Farquaad, incidentally, is less the typical "Evil Overlord"
than a nasty little twerp, and I might add that people who are
self-conscious about their stature will probably really *hate*
this movie and should avoid it. I am *not* joking.

This leads him to a confrontation with the ogre Shrek (voiced
by Mike Myers), which leads in turn to Shrek making a deal with
Farquaad in which our grumpy ogre rescues a princess (Cameron
Diaz) from a dragon. Farquaad, you see, needs to upgrade his
title from "Lord" to "King" and that means marrying
true royalty.

Shrek sets off accompanied by his faithful talking donkey
(voiced by Eddie Murphy) ... well, maybe not exactly *his*
because Shrek can't stand the noisy obnoxious thing and thinks
it's a pain to have around. In any case, many adventures
follow and in the end all the good guys live happily ever
after.

Now I have to say that this is a very well produced, amusing,
and worthwhile movie. It has plenty of laughs in it,
including a very nice set of jabs at Disney World. (Somebody
told me that Shrek is supposed to resemble Michael Eisner,
but if so the resemblance seems pretty general to me.)

In fact, it's such a competent piece of work and built with
the obvious intent to give the viewers their money's worth
that I almost hate to say that it didn't really stay with me
all that long after I watched it. It's a nice piece of eye
candy but not more than that.

Part of the matter was that this movie is of course targeted
for kids, and any such movie has to more or less have a
sentimental, uplfting moral. This is necessarily the case,
since the producers would get burned at the stake by parents
if it didn't, but it would be a lot more entertaining if it
maintained an honest, screwball cynicism to the end.
"Fractured Fairy Tales" did get away with that sort of
twistiness, but that was in a more innocent age.

In addition, if this was one of the earlier computer-generated
animations it would stand out, but now computer generated
animation is common and there's not that much in SHREK that
stands out from the point of view of visual imaginativeness.
(OK, the ogre martini was a nice touch ... )

Like I said, I'm a bit embarrassed to say all that, because
this is a fun movie. I'm just reluctant to say it's the
greatest thing since ice cream. Eddie Murphy's talking donkey
really is a hoot -- when reprimanded, he folds back his ears
and looks downbeat, but the instant the reprimand stops he
pops right back up and gets his nonstop mouth rolling again.
Murphy's shtick has been getting a little tired in the last
number of years, but here he's in good form.

By the way, fussy parents be warned that there is a little
bathroom humor in SHREK, and a little (very oblique) sexual
innuendo. However, in general I wouldn't say parents would
have anything to worry about if they let their kids watch
this movie. They get a lot worse at school.

Review: Well, I love the movie it gives you some funny moments as well as the understanding that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What a great message to give to kids and grown ups alike.

Review: This was a great movie. I have a son who is five and my husband and I had a great time watching this movie with him. My son loved the characters and there were lots of funny parts for Mom & Dad as well. My son constantly asks to watch this movie. We had a fun family night with this flick and highly recommend it.

Summary: Shrek is masterful
Review: Shrek is one of the greatest films of all time. Although it appears to be a children's movie, the humor has been directed at all age groups and maturity levels. My family loved it so much, that we've passed it on to even my grandmother! The simple jokes and allusions (especially to Lord Farquad's height) are creative and sly. Although Shrek (Mike Meyers) does a fabulous job in this film, I would have to say that Eddie Murphy (Donkey) steals the show with his witty commentary and wisecracks. You must see Shrek, whether you are a kid or an adult. Don't be ashamed to rent it...the guy behind the counter will understand.

Summary: An overrrated comedy?
Review: Based on William Steig's bizzare backwards fairy tale, DreamWork's SHREK has fantastic animation, great voice casting and infamous "irreverent" humor. An ogre and a donkey rescuing a princess for an under-endowed King. How cleverly post-modern. Ha and indeed ha. Yes, it's a worldwide cartoon phenomenon or something like that. Now don't get me wrong, I like the recent movies like this one that trade traditional cute jokes for movie lampooning and irreverent gags, but I find it hard to avoid the fact that this "hilarious" comedy is somewhat overrated. Shrek (Mike Myers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are a good odd-couple and there are some great jabs at Disney throughout the film's running time. But fart gags and weird humor aside, it's not as clever as it thinks it is. There are some fantastically funny moments in the film, especially the gingerbread man sequence and lines like "In the morning, i'm making waffles!" And the escape from the dragon's castle is a tour-de-force of fantastic animation and strange gags. However it's far more funnier if you take it as the sum of its parts rather than the movie as a whole. It may sound like just knocking success, but if you actually sit back and watch it, well, it really depends on if you want to sit through a cartoon with gross-out humour and fart gags. From a technical standpoint, the CGI photo-realistic water and fur simulation is brilliant. Since the success of TOY STORY, computer-generated cartoons have come a long way and it's impossible to deny that the CG is impressive. But then, so was the CG in Godzilla (Lesson: Impressive effects do not a good movie make). Watching SHREK in comparison to Pixar's competition MONSTERS INC, the latter is a more clever premise. Shrek gets 5 stars for animation, but it's a 3 star movie for laughs. the DVD extras are impressive though, with Commentaries, mock interviews, 'making of' docos and trailers.
