Summary: Glad I waited for this one!
Review: I was really tempted to buy the first DVD release of this movie, but I'm so glad I waited for the collectors ed.! The bonus material was well worth the extra money spent. There's so many preliminary drawings of both the characters and especially the scenery to flip through you can't take it all in, in one viewing. I actually thought some of the much more detailed drawings of Tarzan in the sketch designs were more impressive than what they ended up with, more like drawings for a graphic novel than a cartoon, It would have been cool to see the entire movie done it that style!It was also fun to hear Phil Collins sing part of one of the songs in different languages! Another fun feature are the multiple sound tracks. It's almost like watching a different movie by switching the sound to the various languages as well as the producers commentary (my favorite; you really feel as if they're right there) and even narrative description. If you haven't bought this movie yet or even if you have, buy THIS version. Definitely worth it!

Summary: Typical Disney fare, but it delivers fun and laughs.
Review: Sure most Disney adaptations bear as much resemblance to the original as the Taj Mahal does to a Kentucky cinder block trailer home, but that doesn't stop them from being fun. Tarzan is one such adaptation that has to be sanitized in order to marketed to seven year olds. The movie scores big by being attractive-Disney's production values are always evident in art, animation and choice of voice actors for the characters (Lance Henrickson as Kerchak, Minnie Driver as Jane Porter, Brian Blessed as Clayton). If they had produced it to follow Burrough's novel, I have a feeling that Tarzan snapping the necks of natives wouldn't not have gone over well with the parents or the seven year olds who went to see it. The most enjoyable part of the film is Jane, who steals the show away from Tarzan, and you know she is going to fun when she first appears. She has a nice perky/adorable/befuddled quality that Rachel Weisz's character, Evelyn Carnahan had in the Mummy. The film follows Tarzan from his ship wreck arrival in Africa, his parent's death at the claws of the leopard Sabour, to his adoption by the apes. And like most Disney films, it explores the concept of belonging within a group that mostly treats Tarzan as a pariah or outsider. Tarzan is torn between his growing affection for Jane and his loyalty to Kerchak (his surrogate father whom he is always trying to prove himself to). Brian Blessed's great white hunter, Clayton, falls short of being a really serious villain only interested in capturing the apes for the money they will bring. His betrayal of Tarzan and Jane fails to impart any real sense urgency, given the ease with which they are defeated. Beyond that the film succeeds by being fun. The visuals are stunning, and while some viewers griped about Tarzan's skateboarding through the jungle, it is on screen for all of 45 seconds. The CGI jungle sequences are excellent and mesh beautifully with the cel animation. An enjoyable little film-good for kids and adults.

Summary: Swingin' from the trees...
Review: The Collector's Edition of Tarzan offers so much information about the making of this incredible film, your head will spin. I spent at least an hour with the second DVD, learning so much about how they crafted this fabulous flick together. It's utterly fascinating, and not long enough! This is the reason I bought my DVD player to begin with, to learn all of these wonderful "behind the scenes" stories. You will not be disappointed with this DVD selection.

Summary: TARZAN - More than an Ape Man
Review: We totally enjoyed this rendition of Tazan. The animation is befitting the BEST of Disney works. I believe Walt would have been pleased with this one - I feel some of Disney's works of past have been below expected quality. This movie was funny, serious, spectacular, quiet, and able to tug at your heart, all at the same time. I highly recommend this movie to ALL.

Review: I bought this video for my nieces and nephews (3 to 7) so they have something special to look at when they come over. Luckily I saw it before the damage. TOO VIOLENT! They will have nightmares for months if they see it!

Summary: The best animation yet, but a typical Disney formula ...
Review: The Disney animators beat themselves with each new film: they are the apex of animators throughout history. Technologically adept scenes of CGI trees overlaid with artwork textures give brilliant sequences of Tarzan 'surfing' through the trees. Unfortunately, Disney can't break away from the tired old convention of using pop songs and musical interludes since they make money. The products coming from Disney no longer shape tomorrow, but follow yesterday. The film work was very pedestrian, the storyboards were flat and centered giving a bland side to the cinematography. One star off for the lack of film smarts, one star off for the DVD commercials forced on the unsuspecting viewer (it felt like 30 minutes of previews). Great for kids, adults, anyone, I recommend this excellent animation for all art students, film buffs, and anyone wanting a good 90 minutes of escapism.

Summary: EXCELLENT
Review: One of the best movies since The Lion King and Mulan! I laughed, I cried and I couldn't wait to watch it again! Jane made a perfect heroine - and I think the execs at Disney cast her perfectly! Tarzan was a very good looking hero (although John Smith is still my personal favorite) and the secondary characters just brought this film to life! It was wonderful and I highly recommend it to all ages!

Summary: i like to help out where i can, it's ridiculous really.
Review: I'm not sure if we saw the same movie.. but what i saw was a MEAN danny glover trying to run tarzan off the land so he could put up a hotel! in the animation field, this would be called, 'animotion', meaning: to move oneself through drawing and 3D computer graphics. this is also demonstrated in a lot of other movies where stopped motion effects are neccessary in order to get the computers to animate in 3D full colour. i spent 3 years studying the ancient art of traditional and new wave animations and art supplies. so, from a technical stand point, i can really try and recommend this picture... because technically speaking, there is alot of 'animations' performed through out. however, the story is not revealing enough for the animotion (not to be confused with animations) to play out the character of the hotel prospector / tyrant who reqiures more 3D visuality but less of the stopped motion (this is where the animation is 'stopped' there by giving the *illusion* of 'stopped motion') to carry out his deeds against tarzan. tarzan, on the other hand, enjoys the full benefit of colour and computer graphics. he can carry out his performance through these techniques of *blue screens* and animotions. but you can't stop them.. it's important to know that.

Summary: No forced Commercials, tons of features, excellent!
Review: Well, disney, you might actually be catching on. . . The DVDalso has a "bounus" not advertised on the front-- you don'thave to sit through 10 minutes of commercials before you watch the movie. The DVD takes you straight to the menu and has more features than almost any other movie I've purchased yet. Some favorites-- Descriptive TheaterVision-- Tony Goldwyn (Voice of Tarzan) narrates the movie for the blind or visually impaired, Animation process demonstration-- uses multiple angle feature to interactively switch between four stages of the animation process. Storyboard/Film comparison shows two frames of the movie-- the storyboard reel and below the final film so you can compare the similarites. Three abandoned sequences from early in the movie's production-- very cool... And nothing beats the visual quality of the direct visual transfer. The blues have never been so blue and the greens have never been so green. Compared to the DVD releases of Hercules and Mulan, which were not direct digital transfers, this movie shines! And to hear the score in 5.1 Dolby Surround is a thing of beauty. Disney-- if you're listening-- keep putting out these collector's editions-- and we'll keep buying them!

Summary: Anamorphic and pack with goodies
Review: Kudos to Disney on this great special edition. Ranks up there with Bug's Life and Abyss. And the DVD-ROM content works on a Mac, for those of us who don't bow to the Microsoft empire. I've never been big on DVD-ROM content though. I think this and Bug's Life CE are the only anamorphic transfers that Disney has done. Keep it up! Wider is better!
