Rating: Summary: No "We aim to Please".... Review: To "Big Mike", sorry, "We aim to Please" is not on this set. Also one of my faves, for Wimpy's line: "Watch me obtain a hamburger without the necessary fee"! Catch it on Cartoon Network's Popeye Show (although it may not be shown in the U.K.). What a godsend for those of us who do get it.
Re: this set...it don't suck. Better'n nuttin's my opinion.
Rating: Summary: Poor execution by VCI...these need a studio release Review: VCI should be commended for their attempt, if not their execution. The Fleischer cartoons look pretty good, especially considering their age. Certain points in the black and white cartoons don't have enough contrast, but the two-reel color cartoons look great. I had no problems viewing the cartoons on disc one (which, fortunately, contains the most important cartoons...the Fleischer Studio releases). However, the Famous Studio cartoons on disk two are riddled with transfer problems. There are numerous places where the screen goes blank, the picture pixilates, or the picture flickers. These are issues that are a result of transfer, not of source, so they are inexcusable.
Another problem with the set...when selecting individual episodes, the DVD continues to the next episode instead of returning to the menu, at the completion of the selected episode.
If you want a cheap way to see some old Fleischer Popeyes without any added sound effects (as on the Good Times release) this is probably the way to go.
Just don't set your expectations too high.
Rating: Summary: POPEYE DESERVES BETTER........................ Review: Yet another regurgitation of public domain Popeye cartoons. People shouldn't confuse this as a legitimate release from the real owners of the Popeye Cartoons. Ted Turner's company owns the great Popeye cartoons, and until we see a bona fide POPEYE collection, we fans of the sailor man have plenty to be angry about!
