Summary: This is NOT a Cartoon!
Review: First let me say that my kids have warmed up to this video and now watch it. It seems to be a good bedtime video. But it is not an animated cartoon the way you expect. It is more like pictures with people reading the story. Some kids might like that, but it took mine awhile to get into it.

Summary: Terrific motivation for children to read
Review: Green Eggs and Ham is a fun book for kids. All three of my kids read it over and over and over. The clever rhymes and repetitions gave the kids the satisfaction that they could read.

I refuse to read into that wonderful book the nonsense of Argentinian politics. If anything, the book challenges the reader to try novel experiences. END

Summary: it would be fun for the kids if there weren't so many words.
Review: I agree with both Jedwards@SCAD.EDU and milkie@aol.com. I think they're both correct in their analysis of Sam I Am. Yes, this is a simple, straight forward children's story as milkie puts it. But also, it could be taken as a summary of the products that were forced upon the political prisoners in Argentina. Sam I Am would most likely be associated with Evita Peron. The green eggs and ham could represent the millions of shoes that her administration tried to force on the hundreds of thousands of prisoners in the last days of her reign. Although the color distribution of the eggs and ham is very important, as mentioned by Jedwards, an even greater point was brought to my attention. Were the green eggs and ham hot? In Seuss' commentary, Sam I Am never mentions the temperature of his green eggs and ham. I think this is because, based on his high school education, Sam I Am knew that if the eggs were too hot, they would produce a bi-polar gas solution called "Helium Acidic Misanthropy", as mentioned by milkie. This is why Sam I Am wanted to get rid of his green eggs and ham as soon as possible. Once he had gotten rid of his 'hot' item, he could use this as a part of his right-wing terrorist plan- the unsuspecting consumer would be used as a suicide bomb once surrounded by a huge crowd of on-lookers. Related to the political situation in Argentina, Evita Peron never mentions the legal status of the shoes. Were the shoes hot; were they stolen? I believe that the hot shoes were used as a last attempt by Peron to save her country. The prisoners that gave in and wore the hot shoes, once freed, could be easily identified and tagged by the autobon society as traders in their home countries. They would then be tried and convicted by the courts of their homelands. Thereby, sparking the political explosion that would have the strength and magnitude that only Peron could have invented. Although both plans, Sam I Am's and Peron's, failed miserably, Suess did get his point across. That being: never yell "theatre" in a crowded fire. And that is why Green Eggs and Ham is the successful book it is today. END

Summary: WONDERFUL ENTERTAINMENT
Review: I always read the book to my children and it was one of their favorites. Now my two year grandson and two year niece love this video as well as the book. Dr. Seuss has always been a favorite of mine. The rhyming of words, the "silly" characters, the repetition, the simplicity of it is what is entertaining to the children. I did not buy the videos based on any the interviews I read. I bought it because it was Dr. Seuss. And we were not disappointed.

Summary: Disappointment
Review: I bought this thinking it was the fully animated cartoon I remember seeing when I was a kid in the 70's. It is NOT the same thing. This is like some really cheesy partially animated reading of the book. Very disappointed in this title.

Summary: good grief! (said Charlie Brown to Sam I Am)...
Review: I can mix up intellectual mumbo jumbo with the best of them, but sometimes it's best to just keep it simple: 3 year-olds don't read between the lines (thank heavens). From a Phi Beta Kappa content to let her kid be a kid--this is a great video and a wonderful book for children--buy it, enjoy it, and don't think too much about it (with my apologies to the deconstructionists).

Summary: Disappointment
Review: I have been looking for the Dr. seuss video's in a dvd format for a long time, so I was very excited when I saw them advertised on Amazon.com. I was very disappointed to find that they were not the videos I remember watching on television as a child. I ordered The Cat in the hat, Green eggs and ham and ABC. I was not happy with any of them. I also ordered How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which is the video and not an animated book.

Summary: Is the ham also green, or is it just the eggs?
Review: I must disagree with the comments made my the person named Milkie. I believe this book to be a representation of the common man's daily fight with the bothersome rituals of advertising. Sam I Am is nothing more than a slogan on a box of popular breakfast cereal. The green eggs are products which he endorses while the ham is much like a new amazing product which is forced upon the consumer. In the end, the consumer buys into Sam I Am's beautiful lies and eats the green eggs and ham. Thus cosuming the new toy, new music album, new car, new brand of shoes, etc. I think that this is a good thing. END

Summary: I'm waiting for it to come out in paperback...
Review: I tend to agree with maulie. Green Eggs and Ham is a subtle poem yet it is disturbing in that it represents our life of mindless consumerism. Sam I Am represents all of us. We are constantly unmercifally inundated with advertising every hour of the day. First we laugh at these products and wonder what kind of people would really need kitchen knives that can cut through large metal sewer pipes. As these images are constantly stirred through our mind by the leftist media, we begin to see ourselves in the commercials until the images we see are only a reflection of us in the mirror. When we finally break down and call the operator, we are forced to hang up embarassed, reminded that they know us by name. While some may claim that HAM is an acronym for Helium Acidic Misanthropy, I still maintain that it stands for Hedonistic Addiction Mentality. My colleagues fail to mention though that EGGS actually stands for EGotistical Greed Syndrome, with Green giving this disorder connotations associated with money. Sam I Am is out of control, just as we as a society are; he wants to live a life with meaning and value, but he ends up trying the one thing that he hates, only to find that he really likes it. This is the trap that many of us fall into. We've changed our minds, and we really like green eggs and ham, but what we don't realize is that the eggs and the ham are clogging our arteries and eventually will be our downfall. We can't face the reality, yet we still try to maintain our self-centered lifestyles. Only by sharing his life will Sam ever find real meaning in life. Sam I Am, like all of us is looking for answers, but green eggs and ham isn't the answer, it's only the start of a much deeper problem. END
