Summary: Charming DVD value for your kids' video library!
Review: Our children already owned & loved these films on VHS, so I was suprised to see both full-length movies available on a single DVD for a bargain price. True, there are no DVD "extras" in addition to the two movies, but the important part -- the animated film -- looks better than ever on DVD. It's a crisp transfer of the charming Beatrix Potter-style animation (not surprising, given that these were done by the folks resposible for the fine "World of Peter Rabbit & Friends" video series).

These wonderful children's films deserve a much wider viewing than I think they've received. They are faithful adaptations of the books, and the animation is, as I mentioned before, charming. But perhaps the best parts are the delightfully engaging voice characterizations -- Rat (voiced by Michael Palin of Monty Python fame), Mole, Badger, and the irrepressible Toad are all done spot-on. Toad's wild antics usually give our young daughters the giggles, and the motorcars and battle heroics are bound to capture the interest of young boys.

A worthwhile purchase, or a great gift for children 2-7 who haven't yet seen these films.

Summary: very much like the book
Review: a longtime fan of the willows, i was pleased to see the producers of this dvd made few changes to the story. rik mayall's voice characterization of toad is perfect. mike palin's ratty is also excellent. and the lovely voice of dame redgrave as the narrator adds to the pleasure.

Summary: Enchanting!
Review: This book is a wonder. I started reading it because I wanted a book like the Redwall series ( a great series) I immediatly could not put it down. The honesty of Rat, Mole and Badger and the charming story make it a wonderful book.

Summary: A lesson in friendship
Review: This is a book to come back to again and again even as an adult. If you haven't read it since a child I recommend rereading for the delight of prose, and finding out what real friendship is all about.

Summary: O, how charming!
Review: At 22, I'm just reading for this for the first time, and I love it. There's something about losing yourself in the world of fussy and friendly little animals with startling personalities--I wish more books were written like this. I'd reccommend it for older children, maybe 9-13, and up, because the language can be difficult. But everyone will love the story, so read it aloud, read it to yourself, read it read it!

Summary: The Wind in the Willows- Willows in Winter DVD
Review: And I thought the video's were fantastic! I compared the sound and picture to the video versions. The dvd is in awesome stereo sound and the picture is crystal clear. Two of the best animated movies I have seen. Kids and Adults will love it.

Summary: Very Nicely Done
Review: I enjoyed both the art and the voices. I think what I really enjoyed most was the "feel" of this video. Some wonderful visual sequences of the sun on the river. More like art and less like a cartoon--although this is animation, not a series of stills as in some other story-videos. Still, it's not the frenzied pace of most cartoons these days. And unlike a lot of animated videos--even ones of this story--it doesn't talk down to kids. I especially liked Michael Palin as the rat. He did a terrific job with the Rabbit Ears Video of "Jack and the Beanstalk," and I wish he'd do more.

Summary: Great story - horrible tape quality
Review: The live action segments at the beginning and ending have a nasty red tint. Vanessa Redgrave nicely sets up the story riding in a boat on the Thames, but the color quality makes it nearly impossible to watch. The cartoon color is better but still not the greatest.

Summary: A treasure
Review: This classic book has been one I've come back to for 40-plus years for it's stories, it's characters and it's wonderful story-TELLING. As uproarious as Toad's madcap adventures are, though, it's probably the story of Ratty and the sweet-natured Mole's adventure in the Wild Wood and their subsequent return to Mole's little home that resonate most with me. This is a book to be read over and over.

Summary: "Oh, my!"
Review: This must certainly be one of the most tenderly beautiful, blissfully peaceful, and wholely enjoyable animated films ever made. My children and I have enjoyed it for years, and I've put extra copies away just in case anything ever happens to the one I have. The music is rich and stirring, and the animation is nothing short of miraculous! The pleasure of watching, and listening to the voice characterizations (especially Michael Palin as Ratty and Alan Bateman as Moley)never dulls. And if you want sleepy children in the evening, just turn off the lights and watch this together! The music works like a charm. I would recommend this movie to all!
