Summary: Beautiful story...broken DVD
Review: I have purchased this DVD twice and have tried to play them on our regular DVD player as well as on two laptops. No matter what I've tried, The Snowman has never played. Only the very different and very awful Father Christmas will work. I finally gave up and bought the VHS tape of The Snowman, so that my children could see the most wonderful and haunting Christmas movie ever made.

Summary: A Christmas Classic
Review: I have watched The Snowman at least once a year since its first airing on Channel 4 in 1982 here in the UK. The music is excellent and the animation, while obviously not on a Disney budget, is brilliant. I do not use the word 'classic' to describe many things, but The Snowman is just that. The second feature, Father Christmas is not a classic but it is not without its charm. The film shows what Santa Claus does on the other 364 days, but strangely he does not live in the North Pole.

My Verdict:
The Snowman 10/10
Father Christmas 6/10

Summary: Defective Disc...
Review: I purchased this DVD brand new and factory sealed. However, the disc is defective, and was clearly manufactured that way. It doesn't work at all. Attempting to play this disc gives me the Title menu followed by the Root menu, and then there is nothing after that-- the rest of the disc is blank. Either it is blank, or the laser beam can't even pick up because the disc is faulty-- either way, giving the same result ( = I can't play the features). I have over forty DVDs, all of which play perfectly, so the problem is NOT with my DVD player or something that I myself am doing wrong. I've tried everything, including re-loading it about thirty times. It is this disc that is the problem: it was burned improperly. After spending $13 on it, I am none too pleased. Perhaps this review will make someone at the factory sit up and take notice, and start turning out discs that actually play. It is sad to see that other reviewers have been forced to buy two or more copies of this DVD before they found one that will work. We shouldn't have to do that-- it's just wrong. I'm sure the company is *thrilled* that they've made three times the profit, by selling three discs to each frustrated and desperate customer. SHAME, shame, shame on the manufacturers.

Summary: Memories of The Snowman
Review: I remember being two or three years old and receiving The Snowman as a Christmas present from my grandparents. It's not only beautifully animated (back to the basics color pencil-animation is sometimes more lovely than advanced and realistic computerized images) but the music and story itself are beyond some of the most gorgeous in history. This is a Christmas classic, folks!

Summary: Father Christmas
Review: I saw "Father Christmas" for the first time several years ago on PBS and thought it was adorable. However, I was extremely disappointed with what I received when I recently purchased the DVD. Instead of hearing Mel Smith as the voice of Father Christmas comically singing "Happy bloomin Christmas" we got an americanized version with a different actor and different dialogue altogether. Too bad they felt it necessary to ruin a perfectly lovely animated film.

Summary: WARNING: Not the Bob Hoskins Version
Review: I was very disappointed with the version of "Father Christmas" on this DVD. For some inexplicable reason, someone chose to re-record the voices, replacing Bob Hoskins with William Dennis Hunt. To make matters worse, they also chose to Americanize and sanitize it, replacing "chips" with "fries" and changing the song "Another Bloomin' Christmas" to "Another Merry Christmas". I'm glad I have the original version on VHS.

Summary: The Snowman and Father Christmas
Review: Imaginative, stylish and downright charming. Everyone's a winner with this pairing and this disc should, by now, be as much a part of Christmas as A Christmas Carol. It is, of course, a real treat for me to hear Father Christmas called Father Christmas and not Santa Claus!
I love it. You will too.

Summary: A family tradition
Review: The Snowman is a family tradition in our home. Our children have watched it since they were old enough to focus--first on PBS, then on video. I am so pleased to see it available on DVD. It has become an important family tradition--we play it nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year's. The music is beautiful--I'd buy the soundtrack if I could find it! It is my gift of choice for families celebrating "baby's first christmas"--knowing that they will enjoy it for many years.

Summary: Magical
Review: The Snowman is beautifully done. It reminds us all of the true magic of Christmas. I highly recommend it.
