Summary: Never Watched Simpsons Before...
Review: I live in a rural area, and have not bothered to get the set up necessary to receive satalite T.V. As a result, I have not viewed comercial television since 1989. During this time, many shows have come and gone without me seeing a single episode (To give you a perspective, the last program I regularly viewed on comercial television was M*A*S*H*). Anyway, to please my two pre-teen daughters, we have quite an inventory of VHS & DVD in our private library; literally hundreds of them. Anyway, I had heard about the Simpsons program and the reviews from friends and others were definitely mixed. Nevertheless, not wanting to be close minded, when I found this one on sale at a local store, I took a chance, and purchased it. Now, please understand, I don't especially like crass humor; in fact, the only reason I knocked off a couple stars is because it is pretty crass and raunchy in some episodes- however not so terrible as to make me thumb down it entirely. Tell you what, IF you have never watched this show, I would say that it is not really appropriate for very young children; especially sensitive ones. There are some fairly scary scenes; TOO scary for the little ones- e.g.: people bursting into flames & dying, sexual inuendo- KINKY sexual inuendo. One character dies when Bart Simpson chops him in the back with an axe- which I think is definately NOT funny- sorry, brutal axe murder just doesn't tickle my funny bone. There is one especially funny scene I will counter this with: the set up is a mock "Hogwarts" school of magic. Every kid is supposed to change a frog into a prince. One student is not so good at it, completely botching the spell by only achieving a partly transformed frog- it is a hideously mutated prince/frog thing. It's just so stupid- the thing moans and begs to be killed, and goes around continuously barfing on everyone. You have to see it to believe it. It is just SO ludicrously funny; I thought I'd die from the stitches in my side.... and my older daughter- 11 1/2 years, ( the little stinker) follows me around doing this amazingly accurate imitation of the scene, which is just driving me to mad tears of laughter. So, anyway, in conclusion IF your kids are mature enough to handle some kind of weird stuff, and you are good at explaining why maybe something ought not be taken too seriouly, then go ahead, buy it. Stay away from it if your kids are of a sensitive and tender nature &/or just too young, OR if you can not abide this type of humor yourself- because, likely you will not like it. Summary: Good but Lack in Substance
Review: The Treehouse of Horror is a good collection for Simpsons fan; but I agree with most, it needs more shows from their Halloween Specials. It makes the buyers scratch their heads and ask why put 4 episodes thats not even in order or that makes sense. Yes, the episodes in the DVD are four great Treehouse of Horror episodes, but they are certainly not the very best (opinions may vary)...But they are funny nontheless, with unforgettable classic Simpsons Halloween stories and moments like Bart's twin, Hugo, to (ex)President Clinton's (impersonated by Kang) speech during the debate, "twirling and twirling towards freedom"(that really will make you laugh out of your sits)... The quality of the video is so much better than what you see in TV, and the audio is crisp. Aside from the limited episodes, the only two complains I have is the awkward menu - each time you choose an episode, you go straight to the episode's menu (why not you do it manually after choosing an episode?); and the lack of features (and beauty) in the DVD. The Kang and Kodos feauturette is way too short and just clips, they didnt even atleast make them talk about the DVD (even as short commentaries)... In the end, if you can spare around $11 for the said DVD, then its a great collection. But if you rather buy the Full Season Packages, thats more advisable. Besides, if youre a Simpson fanatic, its better to see the Treehouse of Horror in TV every Halloween (even if reruns), to have a special mood and nostalgia to it, rather than having you see them anytime you want.

Summary: A good value DVD
Review: I don't reget buying this DVD. If you love the Simpsons, this is a good choice. I agree with the common gripes. Why didn't they release more of the good stuff. A collection of Treehouse of Horror episodes would sell big. I found the lack of good extra's disappointing, too. The DVD seemed just thrown together. On the plus side, these probably are the best epidodes of Treehouse of Horror, for a pretty low price. Number V is probably my favorite, and clinched my decision to by the disc. I probably would have given this a two, but I think that the low price brings up the rating. The store price is about half the price of the average new DVD. They aren't trying to pass this off as some "special edition" DVD. This is just some of the best episodes of the Simpsons you are going to find on one disc.

Summary: One third of the classic Simpsons "Treehouse of Horrorses"
Review: When it comes to Halloween episodes the big three are "Roseanne," "The Simpsons" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (although "BtVS" was always an every other year deal). You would think that the producers of these shows would have figured out that offering an alternative to splatter flicks as what to watch on October 31st that video/DVD packages of classic Halloween episodes would be an obvious choice. But you have to pick up seasons 2 and 4 (and wait for 6) of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," catch "Roseanne" in syndication, and deal with this limited offering from "The Simpsons." It is not often that you come across a DVD that could have increased its average rating by a star if it just had "Volume 1" as part of the title. Actually, this really should be "Volume 2" of "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror," because it offers "Treehouse of Horror" V, VI, VII and XII. Whatever the joke is here, I am clearly missing out on it. Why not V, VI, VII and VIII? For that matter why not I, II, III and IV? Is it because the first three seasons of the Simpsons are out on DVD? It is because Roman numerals confused the people making the decisions? To add insult to injury, these are bare boned discs. No commentaries, no features, no animated menus, just a some clips of Kang and Kodos (e.g., Kang on Jerry Springer). The episodes are great, but the bad faith effort here loses a star. "Treehouse of Horror V" offers a take off on "The Shining," Homer traveling through time with the aid of a toaster in "Time and Punishment," and the school staff doing the Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett bit with the students in "Nightmare Cafeteria." "Treehouse of Horror VI" offers killer billboards in "Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores," Groundskeeper Willie as a Freddie Krueger clone in "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrance," and a computer generated Homer making it to the real world in "Homer3". "Treehouse of Horror VII" reveals that Bart's evil twin has been chained in the attic in "The Thing and I," Lisa creates a microscopic world as a science project in "The Genesis Tub," and Kang and Kodos replace Bill Clinton and Bob Dole in the election as "Mr. Kang Goes to Washington." We then skip ahead to "Treehouse of Horror XII" which has a gypsy curse destroying Homer's life in "Hex and the City," the Simpsons living in a computerized home in "House of Whacks," and the Simpsons' twist on Harry Potter in "Wiz Kids." Of course, the rule of thumb here is what it always has been for "The Simpsons," which is that the more familiar you are with the original films and other pop culture elements being referenced in these episodes, the more you will enjoy them. I should add that these episodes have been "restored" for DVD, which means that the scenes cut for syndication are back in this time around. But the obvious lesson here is that each fall, when the World Series finally ends and FOX gets around to airing the Simpson's new "Treehouse of Horror" episode sometime in early November you should go ahead an tape it to keep for your Halloween enjoyment each year. Who knows when it will actually become available on DVD.

This isn't even a well-thought out idea not being all the treehouse of horrors to date and all. It seems to me FOX is just looking to make a little extra $$$.

Summary: A great idea gone horribly wrong!
Review: The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror is the best of the Simpsons, but I for one am insulted with this DVD. The Halloween episodes, which there are over a dozen at present, should be released either as a complete set or in sequence (1-4, 5-8, etc). The cost for this set may be minimal, but the cost per episode is still higher then those of the complete seasons. I'll wait for them to do it right. They may be greedy, but they aren't stupid.

Summary: Moderately Amusing
Review: As a Simpsons fan, I was intent on buying this DVD, which bears a number of Treehouse of Horrors. I am NOT buying the Seasons on DVd, because I'm only collecting those of my favorite show, M*A*S*H, however, to remain on topic-this DVD had a number of my favorite halloween episodes and was glad to have. One things I'd like to point out,- as a network, Fox must edit to fit in commercials, and the DVD extra, which only an observant one will notice, is that each episode is unedited. There are a number of scenes I've not seen before on TV, and yet, saw on this DVD. So, that's a good little extra feature, but other than that, all we have are the four specials.

Summary: Shoddy closed captioning
Review: In general, I found the episodes on the DVD entertaining. But this is the first time I have purchased a DVD in which the closed captioning is poorly done -- lots of mistakes and omissions. I expect that from broadcast television, not from a professionally made DVD. The subtitles are good, but the print is kind of small and low-contrast.
