Summary: REVENGE no LOBSTER hiki tsurete
Review: For those who were waiting for the release of the last two episodes of this chaotic series, hoping for some semblance of sanity to prevail, I have a bit of bad news. Director Kazuya Tsurumaki has never intended FLCL to be anything else but a tongue in cheek romp through the byroads of anime gone manic. The in-jokes, references, and puns - the incredible juxtaposition of incongruity and fan service - was intended to confuse even its original audience of Japanese anime fans. For us in North America all we can do is hold our hats and enjoy it for what it is - creativity and self expression for its own sake.

Naota and his father Kamon square off in a paintball/survival game for the right to claim Haruka. As if anyone could claim Haruka. Instead, a frantic series of event triggers another of Naota's mental abherrations and Mamimi and he scramble for survival as a giant hand prepared to attack the clothes iron in the sky. Then by a sort of pinball segue we arrive in the final episode, only temporarily safe. Now Naota must deal with Haruka's love/have relationship with a disguised semi-divine pirate.

Despite this drunkards walk of a plot, the illustration and animation are remarkable. Both Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (character design) and Hiroaki Ogura (art direction) refuse to compromise, and the result is far more than a zany comedy. The visual message is that something really is going on, even if it takes using vintage guitars as weapons to get there.

I hope that summary clears up any dangling insecurities you might have. FLCL is anime as if it was written by Nietzche and illustrated by Hieronymus Bosch. It is brilliant, twisted and full of intentional random juxtapositions. Repeatedly, in the interviews, director Tsurumaki responds to questions about 'why' with a chuckle and a shrug. As Naota says at the end, "Nothing amazing happens here..."

Summary: Okay Series - So So plot; Awesome Music
Review: I don't think this series is as great as people make it seem. The best thing about this series is the weird animation and soundtrack. The plot is okay but didn't strike me with any provoking thoughts. I finished the series because I wanted to see how it ended and it was just so weird in the beginning that I couldn't just not finish it. I would watch/borrow this first before buying... and maybe buy the bootleg just to have something weird to show off.

Summary: contemplative anime
Review: I would be hard pressed to find a more confusing anime than FLCL, and that's saying a lot for this genre. Then again it isn't all that surprising coming from studio GAINAX, those who brought us all the way to The End of Evangelion. FLCL is certainly one of their more "down to earth" films at it's heart and is surprisingly simple to analyze once you either ignore or accept the mayhem. The second to last and last episodes are on this DVD which bring this series to an acceptable and nevertheless ambiguous conclusion. In the fifth episode they show their true colors applying more Matrix inspired "bullet time" fight scenes and successfully parodying everything real or animated including South Park. But that is simply for the enjoyment of those who know the references. And in true GAINAX fashion the writer, director and animator lose their last inkling of sanity in bringing this production to a finale. To get a sense of this (and this is not a spoiler) simply look at the cover of this DVD, taken from a frame in the last few scenes. Overall I do wish the series was longer, but I think that would lose some charm if that were the case. Frankly I think it is some of the best animation Production IG has done along with some of the most imaginative storytelling(?) I have seen. To cap it off, a warning to those light of heart, and a shameless promotion: I highly and humbly recommend this series, the last episodes will without a doubt blow your mind.

Summary: a twisted messed up masterpiece
Review: i've seen a lot of diffrent anime in my years of watching anime and i've some good (cowboy bebop, yu yu hakusho) and some bad (digimon, transformers armada)but flcl is one of those that makes you think, the vast styles like the manga scenes and psudo-matrix revolutions are very original. it takes time to figure ot the plot, but you'll get it (eventually) the soundtrack is one of the best in anime and the robot fights are superb. the movment and constent changes in speed during the fights makes you lean on the edge of your seat. just the concept of a 6th grade boy caught between a high school girl and a nineteen year old alien toting a bass that can warp things through other peoples head makes fooly cooly worth seeing over and over.

Summary: Most cryptic, layered anime EVER!
Review: If you love anime, sci-fi, or anything just plain weird, FLCL is for you! The story has many underlying sub-plots. One of which is a boy (Naota) becoming an adult, but still striving to enjoy his adolescence. Then, there is the main plot. This is of an alien girl (Haruko) who comes to earth looking for her true love, Adomus (excuse spelling), an an astral creature dubbed the "Pirate King". He was captured by robots and sent to earth. Haruko must recruit some enemy robots and equipment to aid in her quest. To do this, she opens up an interdimensional portal in Naota's head. The plot gets wacky, weird, and sometimes VERY distrubing. On scene, you think Haruko is DOING THE DIRTY DEED with a robot, I DO NOT RECOMMENDED THIS FOR CHILDREN!

Summary: GOOD, MAYBE GREAT SERIES, BUT CHAOTIC LABELING
Review: Maybe there are bootleg versions all over, but I've seen FLCL 1 sold as FLCL 3.
Other sites sell supposedly episodes 1-6 for $11.95, but what are they? I wish
Amazon would sort this out.
I'd e'd Customer Support, but got no response; which is what happened
when I asked for clarification on the Zatoichi series, which has similar title/labeling confusions.

Amazon is the most trustworthy purveyor of dvds;
but in these few instances, they're napping.

Oh, and if wasn't for the confusing presentation,
I'd rate Fooly Cooly Five Stars+. Or more, if allowed.

Summary: FLCLimax
Review: Of the three volumes of FLCL, this is definitely my favorite. In fact, the two episodes on disc three could not be more different: Episode V, "Bura Bure" is a hilarious spoof on John Woo-type shoot-em-up films, with over-the-top action sequences, tons of lead flying every which way, and pumped up machismo in every frame of animation. There is even a scene with Haruko in a bunny-girl outfit, lampooning Gainax's first "daicon" anime effort--bunny girls flying around on tiny floating objects. Amarao and Kitsurubami are also thrust to the forefront of the action, and we see clearly their roles in the story, as well as that of Atomsk.

Episode VI is truly the climax. It's a far cry from the frenetic action and hilarity of episode V. It is still hard for me to decide just how I feel about Amarao. He is the voice of reason, the only one who is willing to see Haruko for what she really is, yet he too is smitten. And we have such a hard time believing what he says, even though we know he is right. I challenge any male to watch the whole of Fooly Cooly and not fall in love with Haruko. Poor Naota... The tenderness, the sadness, the hopefulness and hopelessness of everything that we have seen in FLCL, it all comes to a head here. Some people might be upset by the ending, but it is the only way things could happen.

This is an anime unlike anything I have ever seen. My only complaint is, as others have said, the value of the total package. $30 per 1-hour DVD is on the expensive side, but after you watch volume 3, you can rest assured that every penny was worth it, that you gladly would have paid twice as much. The Volume 3 DVD also features some of the absolute best songs on the FLCL soundtrack. Unfortunately, many of these are NOT included on the first official soundtrack, the only one that has so far been released in the US. The second volume will be coming out on Septemper 7th, or you can pony up a little more for the import version. Either way, "The Pillows" rock hard, and completely make the experience. Any serious fan will want both OSTs in addition to this stunning final installment of the DVD series. Long live Gainax!
