Summary: An amazing DVD Box Collection
Review: Well I must say that this DVD set is more then worthy in my book. The animation is extremely well done and the number of episodes placed in each DVD disc is very good.

The 3rd DVD, The Tenchi Encyclopedia, was a worthy little extra as the 2 other discs are pretty much extra-less but I suppose that the amount of stuff in the TE, makes up for it in spades.

I'd have given it 5 stars, if it wasn't for the fact that the 13th(and final) episode's subtitling's timing seems a tad off; but a great job all around...More people should who love anime should consider this a keeper.

Summary: Tenchi Muyo, best series ever
Review: I have watch various series of Tenchi and have seen all of the movies. Now this series is the funniest out of the entire collection. The ending is a little odd because you think there is more to the muyo collection, but besides that the jokes and story line is the best. The only thing is that Reyoko has a little trouble keeping her clothes on for some of the episodes. Crazy Reyoko.

Summary: YEAH! TENCHI IS ON DVD!
Review: I LOVED this DVD box set. I've seen the original Tenchi Muyo Collection on VHS and I have to admit...bringing it to DVD was a GREAT IDEA! Also, the Tenchi Encyclopedia is another great addition! Tenchi is a great anime. It has all the classic elements...girls, space, and humor!

Summary: Perfect!
Review: Only a true fan of Tenchi Muyo Could come to realize the quality of this series. It's cool because most of the time, they don't have a main villian that they have to defeat every episode. Some episodes will have them just taking care of a baby, going to a hot springs, or just messing with tenchi! It's interesting to see how they react and what they do. These DVD's have a superior picture compared to the tapes and it sounds great. Although, I wish they would have included an English 5.1 audio track because I'm quite fond of the english voices but I still love to listen to it in japanese as it was originally intended. I'm not complaining but isn't the digital comic on the third disk a little hard to read? Oh Well. Money well spent.

Summary: You will fall in love with this world...OVA defined
Review: I've watched only a few anime shows in my lifetime, traditionally sticking to the classics (e.g., Akira) at the recommendations of my friends. Tenchi showed up after I tried a few other recommendations such as Ghost in the Shell and Demon City Shinjuku (neither of which got me excited, except that Ghost in the Shell had nice visuals).

Suffice it to say that this anime has so won over my heart that, in a time when I'm trying to stay conservative financially, I have already bought the special edition OVA set and all three of the Tenchi movies and am committed to buying all of the TV series episodes to boot (for those like me who didn't know, OVA stands for "original video animation", and means it was a straight to video production).

You will feel the same after watching this series as you did when you finished reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time -- you are entranced by the world...you will miss the characters like you do real people, because they are so expressive and genuine, and you'll want to go back and visit them.

Tips:

1. You definitely want to watch with the original Japanese voice track. I have watched with both English and Japanese and though the English translation was faithful to the meaning, the emotion of the characters isn't communicated like it is in the Japanese...also, the voice casting was just RIGHT. Can't really explain it in words...

2. Watch on a high quality home theater system...this thing will stress every part of the system, every disk has very high quality soundtracks and incredible colors (both the wild and the mild -- beautiful soft cherry blossoms in the foreground with a neon orange slashing death duel in the background...).

3. There is some mild nudity in this series - parts are not appropriate for kids (or at least they'll be somewhat confused) which is a real shame because some of the characters (Ryo-ohki, Sasami, and Misaki) are soooo perfect for the little ones.

Now if I could only figure out who is more alluring...Ryoko or Washu?

Summary: Great start, slow finish
Review: This is a fun, laugh filled anime piece with a healthy bit of fantasy and SciFi. The first half of the series was very good, with a solid, ongoing story and lots of humor. After the first full story, however, things start to break down. The story starts to lose focus, meandering with various starts that lead nowhere. While still fun, it becomes very episodic, and starts at least three ongoing stories which are not continued. Maybe they get back to them in the movies.

I enjoyed the set, but the first DVD is the best with the second being okay and the third nearly useless. The third disk is a collection of information and trailers on the series and movies, but is mostly untranslated. What is translated has to be read off the screen in large blocks of text, not subtitling. It contains no additional episodes.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I'd heard a lot of good things about Tenchi Muyo and a dealer told me that this OVA set would be the best place for me to delve in. But after viewing the 13 episodes I have to say that Tenchi Muyo has been a disappointement.

The story-line, such as it is, is a convuluted mess. I guess Tenchi's creator was looking to make a variety show: a mix of comedy, romance and adventure -- and I've seen some successes in this genre (such as Urusei Yatsura) -- but I feel that this series fails on most levels. I didn't find it particularly humorous, the romance (if you can call it that) was flat (because all of the females' affection for Tenchi is unrequited) and the adventurous elements were few and far between (and not at all memorable).

I also found a couple of characters (Mihoshi and the kitty-bunny-spaceship pet [forget its name]) annoying.

That being said, the animation quality was very good -- I liked some of the character designs (though not Tenchi), the colors are lush and the backgrounds are well drawn. The mecha designs are weak, though. Also, my wife liked this OVA series a little bit more than I did (she'd give it 3 stars).

Obviously, Tenchi Muyo is immensly popular. But for those of you who were (or will be) disappointed, as I was, don't give up on the genre. IMO the best anime has to offer in the romantic comedy genre are: "Kimagure Orange Road", "Maison Ikkoku", "Oh My Goddess!", "Urusei Yatsura" and "Ranma 1/2". You may find these more to your liking.

Summary: We Need Tenchi!
Review: A WONDERFUL series. Though I've only seen it dubbed (but oddly enough its not a horrible dub *gasps in shock*) It's got enough oh a story to pull you in and the characters quickly become your best friends (I'm a strange lonely man, so sue me) I really like when <cencored to prevent spoiling> I recommend getting this, even if it does cost half a months salary.

Summary: This is the best anime on Earth!
Review: I watch Tenchi all the time and I love it! I used to only like DBZ until I saw this! It is positively the best anime ever made! Although, it's dirty, so if you're easily offended, don't get this.

Summary: You won't be sorry.
Review: This is a great title. It's well worth the money to get this whole collection at one time.

The animation is clear, voices are good, and storyline is second only to Fushigi Yugi.

Since this is the DVD version, you can watch it either dubbed or subtitled. I suggest watching it both ways because there are some things that were cleaned up for the English version (as is usually the case).

The plastic casing that goes over the carboard case is tight. The cardboard will start showing wear & tear after only a couple of days. Also, the subtitles get a bit shakey, but they are still readable.

Stop reading reviews and buy this excellent collection already.
