Summary: good but
Review: It is a well-made animation. The plot is solid. But it is a little hard to understand the story in some respects. Keep it in mind that it doesn't have a lot of action.

Summary: A story of what life really is and what life can be...
Review: In the year 2039, life has become cheap, and you can build a body for your mind for peanuts. "Major" Motoko Kusinagi is a woman with such a body, maintained by the government in exchange for her talents as an assasin and terrorist supresor. In this brutal reality, a new form of life is born in cyber-space and tries to get attention by causing political terror. When it is finally confronted "face to face", it insists on its own rights, and only the Major is able to stop it and maybe save this new creature from its own acts of violence. This film makes one think about what it means to be human, and how much another persons life means even if it means nothing to you. A must see.

Summary: The cheese factor destroys what would be a great movie
Review: I don't know, Japanese culture is so radically different from Western, that's probably the reason Ghost in the Shell never did it for me. It's not a bad movie, in fact it's good, well, that is until the ending which absolutely ruins the whole she-bang (no pun intended).

The animation is gorgeous, the plot and characters are well placed, but the damned ending is so cheesy it makes me want to wretch. I guess if you can bypass the ending (I've custom edited my VHS version) then this is quite a good flick, just don't expect a really cool ending (but hell, what movies these days come out with a non-cheesball ending). Face/Off anyone? Ugh, another good movie gone to waste by it's laughable ending. Anyways, my two cents :P

Summary: Impressive: both Intellectually and Visually
Review: The visual effects and comp-gen images were astounding. This is one of the few movies I actually purchased after renting. I found the characterization to be subtle but strong. Kusanagi's relationship with her partner adds realism to the futuristic atmosphere. Minus one star for believability (different technology levels for medical, weaponry, and transportation), but I would give it 4 and 1/2 if that were an available option.

Summary: A delicate balance of blood n' guts and *gasp* a real story!
Review: Not your typical anime. GITS focuses more on a solid (and torturously complicated) plotline sprinkled with some of the best animation and action sequences available. Due to complexity, you'll have to watch it a few times to fully absorb the story, but don't hold that aginst the movie! It is a pleasure to watch GITS multiple times (it's what DVD's are for!).

If you like anime and love a compelling story, this is a sure winner. If your strictly into destruction and *read* comic books for the pretty pictures, you may want to rent the movie first.

Summary: Best animation ever, a little slow
Review: I just rented Ghost in the Shell a couple days ago and I was blow away by the animation, it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. The story was excellent, a little slow at times but the rest of the movie was great.

Summary: don't even bother
Review: The animation may be great but the story is confusing and boring . Compared to even Macross II this movie really sucks.I thought there would be more of a story in it but its so stupid and I would say unfinished.A waste of time.

Summary: Ghost turns typical techno into thinking man action
Review: Masamune Shirow proves himself the master of anime as well as manga with his sci-fi drama Ghost in the Shell. While not usually a fan of sci-fi, I was extremely impressed with this movie. Shirow has taken this painfully overused and cheesy genre and turned it into a story with plenty of over the top action as well as numerous plot twists to strain your brain. Lush animation and complex characters make you want to watch this repeatedly, which is a good thing since you have to watch it over and over to get the entire plot.

Summary: Machine Dreams
Review: Set, not in Tokyo as it was in Masamune Shirow's source graphic novel, but in some futureworld Hong Kong facsimile called Newport City where genertic implants are as regular as tooth caps, Mamuro Oshii's "Ghost in the Shell" is all sensory dislocation , creepy espionage and hardware fetsihism. Mainlining the same dramatic engine as Philipi K. Dick's "Do Andorids Dream of Electric Sheep?", the cult novel that begat "Bladerunner" :machineries achieving consciousness. The derring-do can get as propulsive as heatseekers. You know Oshii's camera always had the dexterity of a Charlie Parker solo. But here,it's quicksilver. One chase scene through twisted kilometers of beehive tenements and backwater shanties will unhinge your jaw. Still. Mere visual razzle-dazzle isn't all Oshii has in mind. The same conspirational anxieties that crept through Oshii's last stabs at standard-bearer anime ("Patlabor" and "Patlabor 2") are here but spiked with a deeper existential dillema. Is the brain connected to the soul? Is evil just a memory? Getting to the bottom isn't easy but the trip is exhilarating. Hands-down. blue-chip renegade entertainment. After Katsuhiro Otomo's watershed humdinger "Akira" , "Ghost in the Shell" is the spanking-new Holy of Holies of anime.

Summary: Great movie, just too complicated.
Review: I have to say that it is one of the most Beautiful animated movies I have ever seen. The artwork is superb and the story behind it (the major's argument of the importance of being human) is really involving. Having only seen the dubbed version, I can't say much about the acting. Honestly, the english actors aren't all that great in some places. But if you can get past the dubbing, it's still a great story. Maybe the english subtitled version is the way to go. The only real complaint I have (and the only reason I didn't give G.I.T.S five stars) is that the story is way too complicated. It requires a couple watchings to get the over all story understood...then a few more watchings after that to see how everything ties in. Once you get to the point where everything ties in, however, Ghost in the Shell is a great movie with great art and characters that really are a thrill to follow. Watch it once, you may feel it's just to difficult to follow and give up on it. But I would encourage anyone to watch it again. You find something new every time.
