Summary: Well...this sure ain't a classic....
Review: Anime is a wonderful thing. Until recently, really imaginitive stories simply could not be shot as live action because the cost was prohibitive. Anime, which is cheap in comparion, has brought us such amazingly imaginitive worlds as Akira, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and so many more.

WHy do I bring all this up? Because Big Wars is a imaginitive idea that only works on anime. And...unfortunetly, it doesn't even work well there.

Big Wars is set on Mars where humans have run headlong into the amrs of the Gods...a strange and ill explained race of angelic women who kick the stuffing out of every human they meet. The main weapon of the humans is the Land Ship, a counter grav drab green battleship that uses guns and missiles in an age when space travel and terra forming are common place. Supporting these massive ships are fighters that, during the entire movie never manage to do anything but die, and armored soldiers who, when set against the elfin Gods, fall with alarming speed. So up went my eyebrow when the human leaders claimed victory at any point.

The main antagonist is the generically named Hell, a massive stealth carrier that wipes out everything that gets close to it and is surrounded by a permanent sandstorm. Our hero in the movie, who's name I do not remember, gets the newest ship to go out and kill Hell. "gasp"

References aside, there is no biblical message here, no deeper meaning to naming these things after various religeous items. I would suspect translation error was it not for the producing company being american. Further, this movie has a number unexplained and totally left field themes that the writers make no effort to explain and do not bother to ground them in science, science fiction or even fantasy. They lie somwhere in the mushed middle ground of the affore mentioned genre.

But I am giving it three stars. Why you ask, after I have attacked with suck venom? Because its just fun to watch the onscreen fights. Push aside the gretuitous sex, needless plot lines and totally braindead character development and one finds a fun and exciting war flick that has plenty of on-screen pyrotechnics and death. The land ships, as unbelievable as they are for modern warfare, look great with their turrets turning and launchers spewing missiles. The fighters, even though they really seem to suck, look great. The alien tech, which is more amorphious and unorigional, include flying saucers and weird walking things with guns. Even so, its worth a few bucks to watch them rip through the human forces like (insert timeless metaphore here). And, when the end of the movie comes, you won't feel fufilled...you won't be any smarter...but maybe your bloodlust will be abated for the short walk to your computer and whatever your playing on it.

Summary: Not bad but not exactly great either
Review: I had mixed feelings about this anime. For one, it felt too short for the story it was trying to tell. While the plot was interesting it just didn't feel as intense as it probably should have. And I was slightly disappointed by the quality of the animation. And the whole notion of nymphomania as a symptom of Gods brain-washing seemed merely like an excuse to include a couple of brief uninspired sex scenes rather than a plot device.

Summary: The Japanime version of "Independence Day" but on Mars!
Review: If you are an Anime fan and have not seen this movie, shame on you! If you are new to veiwing Anime movies than this is a great movie to start with. This movie has a touch of everything that you will find in most Anime movies: Mecha designs, non-stop action, thrilling plot, and the Anime signature; the gratuitous nudity scene.

Yes, this movie runs a bit like the American Movie "Independence Day" in the respects that it is the humans versus the aliens, and we the viewers are right in the thick of it. The cinematography concept literally drops us into the middle of the war on Mars with no clue of what's been going on. And the ending leaves us hanging on wondering which way the war will turn next. A fantastic cross between a war movie and a sci-fi thriller, this movie places the veiwer into the middle of humanity's last hope: a new experimental battleship with a battle hardened captain against a mysterious new ipregnable fortress that is slaughtering the humans in this war.

But for the die hard Anime fans there is the solemn promise that Big Wars actually lives up to its name. The battle sequences are done on such a fashion as to let you realize that there is an ENTIRE WAR going around and that even though the chataracters we are following have an important part in it, they are a far cry form the only ones involved. The characters are identifiable and close to reality in the way that they could easily be our sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters.

The only hard to grasp element is the new mind control technique that the aliens use to convert humans to their side. Nymphomania is the first and most noticiable symptom and the hardest for me to swallow. However, the only two nudity scenes are thankfully brief and (amazingly) used to further the plot of the story towards the inevitable titanic ending of the movie.

Buy this movie. If you can't than rent it. I actually enjoyed this more than I did Independence Day in a lot of respects, and that is saying a lot for a red-blooded american like me! I am honored to be the first to rate this top notch film for amazon.com and all you movie watchers. Enjoy!!

Summary: Horrible film is a nonstop freak show
Review: Mundane, bottom-of-the-barrel futuristic STAR WARS - type movie, tracks the exploits of a land battleship called the Aeoba and its captain as they battle it out in long, dreary fight scenes. Nonstop parade of slimy, repulsive effects turns this into a freak show and drowns most of the action. 1 star is too good for this piece of trash.

Summary: An impulse buy, makes me want to stop impulse buying...
Review: The animation was cool, but the storyline lacked a whole lot of substance. This movie needs a lot more background information for it to be interesting. Also, remember the speeder chase through the forest in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? Well, expect to hear those very sound bytes for the alien fighters in this movie...

Summary: The animation was great, the story was good, but....
Review: The animation was excellent up in the catagory of Ghost and Akira, the story was fairly well done, the only problem I had with it, was that it was real short. They could have easly have added another half hour to it, and it still wouldn't have dragged. This movie is mostly for testosterone driven males though, much nudity, and violence.

Summary: Big Drawers
Review: This movie stinks. The wars aren't "big," and the big aren't "wars." But there's a lot of smoke and stuff, if you're into that sort of thing. Instead of this, you should try Big Wars.
