Summary: Great Anime, Ok DVD
Review: I love DBZ (thanks to a pokemon magazine i bought) so I thought this would cool to watch. I knew this was the old version, but I can't get the new uncut ones so I got this. This DVD has the first 4 episodes of DBZ in a movie format( yes a MOVIE format, so it dosen't tell you which episode you're watching). This is a cheaply made DVD that nothing to do except watch the episodes. When you put the DVD in It does tell you the history of the Dragonballs and the "movie" starts. The voices aren't the best (and Master Roshi's and Krillin's voices are ESPECILLY bad.) I would reccommed this if you're a beginner, but if you're a collector wait for the (supposdely) New Saiyan Saga on dvd soon. (Right I'll belive it when I see it. Bojack SHOULD BE OUT NOW AND IT ISN'T so i'll belive when i see it.)

Summary: Great way to get Started with DBZ!
Review: I recently got hooked on DragonBall Z (DBZ) from Cartoon Network's Toonami, and I saw this DVD for such a great price and I went for it....It is worth it! This DVD introduces you to all the main Characters with the first 4 Episodes of this great Series. Unfortunatly, this DVD doesn't have subtitles nor is Closed Captioned, but the english dub works well. A Nice plus about the DVD is that it also gives you the previews for all of the Episodes on the Next DVD. It also gives you a brief introduction to Goku and the story behind the original 'DragonBall' Series in case you didn't get to see them. This DVD is a great way to get started with anime! Buy the DVD instead of VHS if you can, it works out better! Great DVD!

Summary: DBZ all the way
Review: I've recently become hooked on the craze known as Dragon Ball Z, and let me tell it is a ride. Although the first 14 or so volumes are edited, thanks to Saban, that's right, the same people you bring you Mighty Morphine Power Rangers. They are not the full versions, but the newer ones that take place on Namek have the edited and uncut, but anyway, for the first DVD in this series, it is awesome. It really sets up what is a great adventure and captures the imagination of the viewer. The only bad thing about this DVD is the edit, but, once the newer ones come out on DVD, no one will have to worry about seeing edited cartoons again.

Summary: Great anime series, bad dub
Review: INTRODUCTION:
The Dragonball manga was created by Akira Toriyama, the same person who was previously responsible for the Dr. Slump series, as well as the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in America) series of video games. In the latter half of the eighties, Dragon Ball became a Japanese anime. And when the series drew to a close, he created a follow-up series - Dragon Ball Z. This one also became an anime. Nearly six years after its original Japanese release, Dragon Ball Z finally arrived in America. Unfortunately, Toei Animation (the company that created the anime) added in a number of filler episodes, and FUNimation (the owner of the American rights to the series) was forced to make large amounts of edits so that the show would meet American television standards. Though their dub voice actors actually were pretty good, they had a tendency to mistranslate some information and use a good deal of stupid dialogue. This package contains the first four episodes of the series. Read on for my review.

EPISODE SUMMARIES:
-The Arrival Of Raditz: Five years have passed since Goku has last seen his friends. He meets up with them at Master Roshi's island, and introduces them to his son, Gohan. Everything seems well until a man shows up, saying he is Goku's brother, and that he was sent to earth to destroy it. Master Roshi tells Goku that the man's story is true - Goku is, in fact, an alien. Raditz (Goku's brother) kidnaps Gohan, and tells Goku that if he doesn't start killing humans (the reason he was sent to earth as a child), he will kill his son. Just before Goku can go after him, his arch-rival Piccolo shows up, with an interesting proposition.
-The World's Strongest Team: Piccolo reveals that in recent hours, he too had a conflict with Raditz, and wanted revenge. The two arch-rivals join forces and go after Raditz. To increase their power, they remove their weighted clothing, and then go into battle. Unfortunately, Raditz's power proves to be beyond anything they have ever faced before. They are quickly overwhelmed.
-Gohan's Hidden Powers: Goku remembers that when he had a tail as a boy, it would hurt badly if someone grabbed it. Remembering this, he grabs Raditz's tail, rendering him powerless. Unfortunately, Raditz tricks him into letting go. Just then, the space capsule Raditz came to earth in explodes (this is where he was holding Gohan prisoner.) Demonstrating an unbelievable power that he has no control over, Gohan rams into Raditz's chest, stunning him. Goku grabs his tail again, and Piccolo begins charging up his new attack - the one he originally developed to kill Goku with.
-Goku's Unusual Journey: With Piccolo's new attack, the Special Beam Cannon, both Raditz and Goku die. Unfortunately, with Raditz's dying breath, he says that two more Saiyans, much stronger than him, heard Piccolo talking about the Dragon Balls, and in one year, they will arrive to hunt them down and wish for immortality. Bulma removes the scouter from Raditz's face, so that she can fix it. Goku arrives in the afterlife, where he is given a challenge - cross Snake Way, a ten thousand mile long road above hell. At the end he will meet a martial arts master that can train him to fight against the Saiyans. Meanwhile, Piccolo regenerates the arm he lost in the fight with Raditz, and takes Gohan, telling Goku's friends that he can train him to control his hidden power. This episode marks the first appearance of Kami, King Yamma, Nappa, and Vegeta.

EPISODE OPINIONS:
These are decent dubbed episodes. They are probably the only early dub episodes that feature the words "kill" and "die." Also, all of the voices are very good - except for Vegeta's. Unfortunately, FUNimation cut a huge chunk out of the first episode. Also, Raditz says that the Saiyan homeplanet Vegeta was destroyed by a meteor three years ago, despite the fact that there is overwhelming evidence later on that confirms it is twenty years ago. Also, he is revealed later on to have known Frieza destroyed the planet, not a meteor. For some strange reason, FUNimation changed the color of Piccolo's blood. What difference does it make? It's still blood! A huge problem with this episode is that Nappa and Vegeta are colored incorrectly, but this is Toei's fault, not FUNimation's. Overall, a good start to the series.

DVD:
This DVD is good because it has better picture quality than a VHS tape, but horrible because it only contains the edited dub, and not an uncut sub like later Dragon Ball Z DVDs. I recently heard word that FUNimation will be redubbing the Saiyan Saga and the former half of the Frieza saga, so don't go out and buy this right away.

OVERALL:
Overall, Arrival does a pretty good job kicking off the Dragon Ball Z series - but from here on out, there would be plenty of edits and stupid dialogue (the next episode would introduce the infamous "next dimension" line that would be beaten to death later on.) Although Dragon Ball Z is an excellent anime, I don't recommend this. I recommend seeing the series in its uncut, original Japanese glory; this dub doesn't do it justice.

Summary: i like DBZ but not when its censored
Review: not when its censored. this verison was done by Pioneer Animation thats why there is no uncensored version of it. Personaly i think its a waste of resources and money, to put an uncensored verion of a movie or a series in a DVD. but Pioneer Animation messed up and did that.

This volume starts the whole DBZ series. this is where we first learn Goku's reala origin. it picks up where the regular Dragonball left off, for those of you that are familiar with the regular Dragonball. this volume goes by so fast because a lot of things happen in such a short time. GOku's brother comes to earth to remind him of his true identity, that all saiyans are born to dominate and destroy the weak. Goku being the defender of the weak, has to defend his home along with a very unlikey ally...

Summary: Matt's Review
Review: Ok if you want the dead truth I would buy this video if I were just coming into the DBZ thing because it has the first three episodes that really set up the whole plot which would help you if haven't seen them, and if you watch the show you'll see what I mean. But this is only my suggestion, anyway I'm a big fan of DBZ. NOTICE : If I were you I would BUY THIS VIDEO !

Summary: Beginning of the Dragonball Z saga!
Review: The first story on this dvd is kind of like a reunion tour. All of the characters from the Dragonball series reunite on Master Roshi's island to catch up with each other. This is where they are introduced to Gohan, the son of Goku. Goku's long lost brother shows up shortly after and ruins the party. I would advise anyone who has been following the story on TV to pick up this dvd to see where everything started from. My only complaint about it would be that the little Gohan can be a little too whiny and annoying at times. Overall a great purchase!
