Rating: Summary: Excellent anthology soundtrack Review: This movie has an excellent anthology soundtrack. The eclectic mix of tracks includes works from Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, Stevie Nicks, Devo, others.I strongly recommend that you purchase the CD, and listen to it exclusively for three to four weeks. Once you've developed a proper appreciation for the soundtrack, you are now qualified to view this wonderfully disjointed, adolescent movie. I recently watched the opening sequence of this movie with some friends. In the beginning of the movie, a space shuttle launches a vintage Corvette, which proceeds to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and crash-land in a wheatfield. Completely unharmed. One of my friends wanted to know why the Corvette's parachute deploys AFTER it smacks the ground. * sigh * Either you get it, or you don't.
Rating: Summary: And the Soundtrack Please... Review: No adult-animated list would be complete without the well-known forebear of combining sex, violence and rock-n-roll. This is a great starting point for any interested newcomer to the world of classic adult animation. It's a collection of six short stories all based around a mysterious and deadly glowing green orb retelling it's history to a frightened young girl. Combines comedy, action and the blaring tunes of the era's hottest rock bands including Blue Oyster Cult, Devo, and, singing the title track, Sammy Hagar.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie, Disappointing Special Features. Review: Heavy Metal was the first R rated movie I ever saw at a theatre and I loved it. I was one of the many who lamented that it had never been available on VHS. When it came out, I grabbed it first day. I did the same thing when the DVD came out, in hopes of getting some cool bonus features. The movie is still great (although I think the theatrical release, which cut one section included in this version, was better). The disappointment for me was in the bonus features. I found the commentary boring and pedantic and I just wasn't that happy with it. At least the DVD has better sound than the VHS version.
Rating: Summary: Much better Review: This is actually a movie made by some of the best artists in the business. It's beautifully done, with interesting stories. It's a lot like the magazine. If the magazine inspires masturbation, I must be reading a different magazine. The music is also not "the worst to come out of the 80s". In fact, the music is about the best heavy metal to come out of the 80s. "Veteran of 1000 psychic wars" is an enduring classic, as is Devo's "working in a coal mine." This is what movies are about: it's funny, cool, sexy, and most of all, entertaining.
Rating: Summary: Good Idea, but bad music choices Review: The concept is genius! Sex, sci-fi adventure, SCTV cast members doing the voices, and, of course, Heavy Metal Music! Except....Journey? Why the heck isn't Hawkwind all over this sountrack? THEY ARE THE OBVIOUS CHOICE!
Rating: Summary: Dirty, simple, adult = Good! :) Review: I found out about this movie through the THX re-release of American Pop (another awesome movie) that I rented from the video store (Hollywood Video rules!). What turned me on was that it was an adult's movie and animated -- something that is too rare in America (exculding Japanese features). I loved this, and found it to be very interesting and weird; in other words, perfect, for me! ;) But, of course, there are those who'll put it down either because they are against adult animation or say that Heavy Metal is dumb and lacking of real substance. I think people these days take themselves too seriously, and movies the same way. People, just relax and enjoy the movie for what it is and don't always expect a Gone With The Wind or Color Purple standard of depth and truthfulness! Just enjoy! Geez! Anyway, if you like animation and are looking for a feature that requires little thinking -- if any at all -- and want something adult, get this! And don't forget to enjoy! :)
Rating: Summary: Looking forward to "Heavy Metal 2000!" Review: Great movie for one made in its time! I enjoyed it every minute! NOT for kids and early teens though! Lots of nudity, language, gore, violence. HEAVY METAL 2000 is out now...according to a preview I just saw on a rental of "Eye of the Beholder."
Rating: Summary: PERFECT MOVIE! Review: THIS MOVIE ROCKZ! IT HAS THE PREFECT AMOUNT OF ACTION, STYLE, SCI-FI, HORROR, COMEDY, AND OF COURSE, NUDITY. GO BUY IT NOW.
Rating: Summary: Unimpressed with special features Review: The surround sound is excellent. The deleted scene is bad. The commentaries sound like someone reading a textbook, very boring after 2 minutes. I was dissapointed in the extra feautures but if you enjoy the movie and have a good surround sound system, then get it.
Rating: Summary: Packed with extras - A real treat! Review: A fine example of contemporary 80's animation, the DVD version of this movie is like a swiss-army knife of extras and added features. Commentary, lost scenes, original animation cells, a Heavy Metal Magazine cover retrospective, interviews, and more make this a terrific bargain if you're a fan. I'd forgotten just how much fun this movie was, and now have gained an added appreciation of the making of it. Highly recommended.
