Summary: On the Special Edition
Review: The second DVD has 4 documentaries, which are essentially one documentary. That is, the footage from all four documentaries is culled from the same interview material, and divided into special topics. They're divided up into three approx. thirty minute documentaries, and one approx. seventeen minute documentary. That's not a complaint, just a clarification. One complaint I do have is that Speilberg mentioned in one of the shorts that he had indeed shot the "resolution" scene between Celie and Mister (he mentioned it was six minutes long) but decided not to include it in the film. To be a "Deluxe" edition, it would have been nice to have some deleted scenes included, particularly this one. I felt a little frustrated with that. It was however very nice to see footage of people like Akosua Busia and Margaret Avery, whom I've never seen interviewed about the movie, as well as seeing Alice Walker herself. Also highly recommneded on that note is her book "The Same River Twice", a terrific memoir but especially insightful for fans of the film (it includes Walker's own version of the screenplay). It was particularly nice to hear her speak of (and see pictures of) her relatives- the inspiration for the film. All in all, this edition is great for fans of the film, even if it seems there could have been a little more in the area of "extras." And if you don't already own the movie on DVD, this is a great choice, the minimal difference in price is worth the insight provided by the additional stuff.

Summary: Finally, this is the one you should not miss
Review: I have long enjoyed the movie the Color Purple. Superb Acting. Incredible Scenery. The most amazing original score and soundtrack by John Williams. Such a powerful story of one woman's struggle (Ms. Celie) in life. I bought the first DVD available for this, and own the book by Alice Walker, the full original soundtrack on CD. I plan to buy this DVD as well. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good cinema. One of my favorite movies of all time, without a doubt.

Review: How I have waited for this special edition! This is a movie that touches you on a lot of levels...I cannot heap enough praise on the cast and director, nor can I recommend a movie that is as worth seeing as "The Color Purple". What a triumph of the spirit! Everyone should see this movie at least once in their lifetime. 5+ STARS!

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME, PERIOD.
Review: This is one of Steven Speilberg's treasures. I think that it should have won every Oscar that it was nominated for. Everytime I think about all the nominations it got, and the number of awards that it DIDN'T win, I get angry. Too angry, perhaps. It's actually scary how angry I get when I think of it. Anyways, this was THE best film of 1985, and I don't care what anyone else says. I mean, every performance was Oscar worthy. ... needs to do more acting, but her schedule IS probably a bit hectic. Her performance as Sofia is awesome. Whoopi Goldberg as Celie...no one else could have played the part better. Danny Glover turns Mister into a three dimensional character that you can hate, laugh at, and feel sorry for at the same time. I just flat out love this movie. A few people just didn't care for this film, and they all need to re-adjust themselves, watch this gem again, and get a second opinion. There is just something about this film. I love it, and I have seen it over fifty times. I will see it fifty MORE times. Steven Speilberg created a classic. He can be sure that his first adult film was a success. It is filled with emotion, and the end always forces me to cry. I'm rambling and I know it, but this movie is awesome, people! I bought the Special Edition DVD, and the extras are great. Also, for those of you who have not read the book yet, go find it and read it. It was banned from my school by close-minded people, but I had the chance to read it before then. Anyways, if you haven't seen the movie, RUN and go out and rent it...OR EVEN BETTER, JUST GO AND BUY IT.Highly Recommended!

Summary: One of the Top 100 movies of all time
Review: This movie was a literal tour de force for director Stephen Spielberg. Sadly, it was ignored by the Academy Awards (film received 11 nominations, and won none. Lost the Best Picture Oscar to the vapid 'Out of Africa'), but I don't think that they believed it was actually Spielberg making this film. This film followed: E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws. What do you do with a artist so versatile? This movie proves that story and characterization is what drives a film, not just pyro-technics and special effects (alone). It proved that Stephen's movies had all of that and it also proves that Stephen Spielberg is the man that can do it all.
For a man who's previous films were sci-fi, fantasy, I don't think the industry took him seriously just yet. However, they were going to.
I have been waiting for the Special Edition DVD release since DVD's creation. This film just needs more attention and more notice, besides launching the acting career of Whoopi Goldberg and establishing Danny Glover, it showed us a brilliant Oprah Winfrey and a whole host of other fine actors. Not to mention establishing Stephen Spielberg firmly in the records of film making as one of our greatest directors and story-tellers of all time.
Not to be missed. A must-see.

Review: Spielberg made it easy for everyone to love this movie. The talented actresses and actors made the film what it is even in today's standard. I have watched this movie probably about 15 times and everytime it captivates and moves me. This is definately at the top of my favorite film list.

Summary: The Color Purple
Review: Mere words can not adequately describe this film. However, I'm compelled to try. The Color Purple is at the top of my movie list. Whoopie and Oprah was absolutely phenomenal. With Danny Glover, I loved to hate him and I hated to love him (because he is such a great person but played such a wicked part.) I've watched this movie at least 10 times and still it moves me. I must admit Spielberg's race made me a bit concerned. When I first learned he would be the Director, I wondered how he would capture the images and do justice to Alice Walker's masterpeice. However, he surely stepped up to the plate and hit a homerun. I will continue to recommend it til my very lips fall off. It is worthy of such exaggerations.

Review: I could drub on and on about how great this movie is, but I'll keep it short: Watch. Listen. Absorb. You will be a better person for having seen this movie. This movie has been a favorite of mine for over 10 years and I listen to the soundtrack regualarly. It's only once every 10 or 20 years that a story/soundtrack like this comes along...

Review: By turns devastating and uplifting, Steve Spielberg's adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is one of those rare films that effectively captures and builds on the book's underlying themes and moods. Epic and grand in its exectution, "The Color Purple" is accessible to viewers of any race and is no more an "african-american" film than "Gone With the Wind" was a "southern" film. The themes presented here - tolerance, integration, poverty, aspiration and assimilation - are universal and real and Spielberg delivers a potent mix of superb film technique, a well-crafted plot and simply said, breakthtakingly heartfelt performances from an all-star cast.
Whoopie Goldberg earned an Oscar nod for her amazing performance as Celie, literally transforming herself from the stand-up comedienne we all know and love into a sensitive woman-child whose life is a mix of tragedy and triumph. Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey are bookends in Celie's life - they embody their characters fully and in doing so, complete a triad of powerful women coping with fear, loss and repression that testify to the unique challenges women, and especially women of color, face even today. Very few films deserve to be classified as required viewing for all - "Schindler's List" "Birth of a Nation" are two that come to mind - and "The Color Purple" is one of them. Filled with raw dramatic power and awe-inspiring humanity, "The Color Purple" is a film for the ages. Read the book and watch the film to see how great film adaptations are done!
