Summary: I am now releived, thank you mr.spielberg
Review: because I am a white male American I v'e been feeling guilty about that whole slavery thing for years. well after seeing the color purple I can now proudly proclaim that this country is racially healed. And we owe it all to the great spielberg and this great film. So The next time some black dude starts goin off about how the mans been oppressing him I'll tell him to go see the color purple.I think its about high time that Blacks wake up and realise that it wasnt only white hillbillys thatwere oppressing them but their own kind as well. A special kudos to mr. spielberg for having the courage to tackle a black story. your insight into african americans is so great that I'm sure many of the blacks who saw this film and never heard of you thought you were probally black. anyways it really is a great film and its about damned time somebody mustered up the nerve to conclude that although whites did play a key role in the oppression of American americans,Danny Glover is also to blame for much if not more of his own people's hardship, shame on you mr. Glover, and as for you Mr. Spielberg well I bet if M. L.K jr. were alive today he would probally neal down before you in awe of that supreme compassion that equates itself with the name Spielberg

Summary: A Work of Art! A Must Own!
Review: This DVD has been out since March 1997 (the video years before that) and I still enjoy it every time I view it! In fact, it was the very first DVD I purchased and if you don't own one of these machines, GET ONE! It's like seeing the movie for the first time all over again when you compare DVD to VHS. Though the disc itself may not be "reference" quality, the movie is.

Sit down for a rollercoaster of emotions and throw away all barriers of color because once you get involved with the characters, they all vanish. It covers both issues of race and of abuse concerning black women during the turn of the century and how so often they were bought as wives, but more often as servents within their own house. The storyline is timeless and it DOES have a Very Happy ending! People cheered for Celie in the theatres as she comes out on top.

Each and every one of the actors were virtual "unknows" at the time (that is the way Spielberg wanted it) and this is the vehicle that help launched their careers. Yet it is a sad state of affairs that this highly nominated movie and its actors never won an Oscar that was so well deserved because of the controversial theme. Hollywood had second thoughts when everyone protested but all too late.

Others have written an adequate synopsis of the movie's content so I will let you read those elsewhere, but take it from me, a person hard to please and usually watch and purchase FX movies, this is one you will want to own and make a tradition to watch over and over again, side-by-side with "The Wizard of Oz". It will tug at both men and women's heart strings alike!

Also, as of this date, there is plans for a reissue "Special Edition" DVD this year. Many of Steven Spielberg's titles have yet to be seen on DVD and this one slipped out before he had a say so in the matter so, he has authorized a reissue. When?

Summary: One of my top 3 films of all time!
Review: Despite the ever so popular view that the film is a condemnation of black men I (a black male) have to disagree. What the film so adeptly demonstrates is the very harsh realities that far too many women (black women in particular) have had to endure for far too long in a male dominated society. The strength of all of the female characters is indominatable. That being said we should not forget how important racism was in creating the attitudes of black males then as today. That doesn't excuse the behavior nor eliminate the responsibility for the acts but it does however help to explain them.

Spielberg's direction is better (in my opinion) in this film than in any other film of his career (Schindler's List) included. For him not to have received the Oscar as best director and for this film to have been denied the Best Picture award is one of many great injustices perpertrated by the ... hollywood establishment. The most dramatic (not emotional mind you) scene in the movie is when Celie is getting ready to shave Mister at the same time as her son is undertaking his ritual and Shug has intuition about Celie's murderous intent. Absolutely flawless. The music was perfect as it built in intensity.

You'll laugh, cry, think and be entertained. What more could you ask for.

Whoopi Goldberg is one of the best dramatic actresses I think i've ever seen. The same can't be said for her less than comedic talents. Oprah and Margeret Avery were outstanding and so deftly contrast Whoopi's performance and underscore the many different indignities suffered by all of the women albeit in different ways.

It ultimately is a triumph of the human spirit.

Summary: the right review for you on the color purple
Review: The movie color purple was a good movie. The film had great scripts and costums. The acters worked very well together. The things I liked most about the movie was that the costums went well with the time frames. I think every one should view this movie. This film is a good educational movie on the life of a black woman in the 1930's

Summary: What brilliant color
Review: I really enjoyed this movie. Because the dialogue, acting, characters, makeup,etc... Were really on point. It's a good movie to watch during Thanksgiving, Chritsmas, and Easter. Because it kinda gives you a sense for the holidays. I recommend this movie for audiences twelve and up.

Summary: "Miss Celie, I Feels Like Singin'!"
Review: I just bought this disc and watched it last night. I bawled my eyes out. I haven't seen it in many years and had forgotten what an incredible film it is. I gave it only 4 stars because of what many other reviewers have said about the DVD -- it's not double-layered and requires a "flip" right after Celie and Shug kiss.

I was particularly moved by Oprah Winfrey's performance. We all know her as OPRAH now. I'd forgotten how amazing she was in COLOR PURPLE.

I think if Spielberg made this movie today he might not shy away from some of the heavier themes like he did in 1985. But his filmmaking technique was incredible for this film. It plays like an old-fashioned Hollywood movie. The colors are gorgeous. (How did they get all those perfectly purple flowers in that field ? ) The camera work is exciting.

Everyone has their "crying" moments in COLOR PURPLE. These are mine: 1. The breakup of the sisters ("Ain't no mountain, ain't no sea..."). 2. Celie gets the letter ("I got two children..."). 3. God's Tryin To Tell You Something ("See daddy, even singers got soul") and, of course, 4. The end.

It's about life. It's about love. It's about us. Thank you Alice Walker, Steven Spielberg, and Whoopi.

Summary: NO MOVIE BEFORE OR AFTER HAS EVER COMPARED!
Review: I am not surprised at all that so many have chosen to take the time put a few words down about this movie. I was 15 when i first saw it. My friends and I knew all the dialogue. We use to watch it and act it out together to see who could dramatize better. For about a year now,I have been looking for this movie to buy. Every store, every place that I went! I thought for sure that such a great movie would be amongst those in the large selections at target or kmart, but nothing! Then I thought i could find it online for sure, and I had no such luck. I'd given up for the last few months, but now it looks like I'll finally be able to get it. My 9 year old daughter has been very anxious to watch it, and has searched through many racks of videos with me. She can't wait to see it, from what I have told her. I know that she will like it, as I don't know of anyone who wouldn't! It's amazing how many reviews in just a recent time! It's almost strange like mental telepathy.

Summary: CHEAP DVD
Review: I like the movie, but I give the DVD one star for one reason: YOU HAVE TO FLIP THE DISC OVER TO WATCH IT!! What crap is that? THE MATRIX fit a movie the almost the SAME LENGTH on one side, along with a load of DVD and DVD-ROM extras. Sheesh. What a waste of my money.
