Summary: "There's to be a colored regiment?!"
Review: GLORY...is very deserving of all it's praise. It is a fine film full of action and emotion. It also shows that people in the Union treated African Americans the same as people did in the South. But this isn't why it's a great film. The film's recreation of the time period and the epic reenactments of the battles of Antietam, James Island and Fort Wagner were incredible, and the performances turned in by Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington (in his much deserved Oscar-winning performance), and Morgan Freeman were superb. The DVD also deserves much praise, with documentaries that show the plight of the colored soldier as well as some fine behind-the-scenes material. A film Civil War buffs will cherish forever! Grade: A+

Summary: What A Movie Should Be...
Review: GLORY is without a doubt one of the finest films to be seen on the silver screen.

It has the best actors in the business. The character development throughout the story is superb. At the end of the movie you just sit there in a mesmerized state. The story draws you in like none other. There can't be enough said about its quality.

An excellent movie to be viewed by all.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Summary: Fantabulous!!
Review: I doubt that I could add more to what has already been said about this film. If you enjoy a drama that gives you a broad-based emotional rush, Glory sure fits the bill!! James Horner's score is the perfect capstone to send that emotion exploding through your senses.
This two DVD set is excellent with many interesting bonus features including BOTH widescreen and full screen versions. The audio is a wee bit dated, but the Dolby Digital rehash still provides plenty of impact through any home surround system with a digital decoder. Some of the channel separation wasn't as discrete as I would have liked, but it is in no way a reason to be a deterent from purchasing this DVD.
Regardless whether you are a war movie buff or not, no movie collection would be complete without GLORY!

Summary: The Forgotten Warriors.
Review: I first saw this film on TV, when it screened over 2 nights. I was impressed then and my opinion has not changed. The African-American involvement in the Civil War of America has been conveniently tucked away for too long. The blacks who fought were in gravest danger for their lives - wether or not they fought - as the Confederates placed bounties on their heads. Their officers likewise had to be brave men with Confederate warrants for execution hanging over them. The blacks had to work as hard as any slaves under conditions often as bad and they did so without pay. For they would not accept anything less than equality. Yet they worked! White soldiers watched them from their camps, doing little while the black soldiers slaved away at tasks the whites would not do. Then the blacks fought. An amazing tale finally brought into the light.
I must disagree with those who dislike Broderick in this role however. I personally dislike his acting in many other roles but his resemblance to Shaw is startling. If you look at the photos, you can not tell the difference between them. This is one performance of his I heartily approve of.

Summary: 3 words: Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!
Review: Glory is the 1989 masterpiece starring Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw in this true story of the 1st black Union battalion to go into battle. Morgan Freeman portrays the wise Sergeant Major Rawlins and Denzel Washington the cynical Private Trip who comes to believe in the Union cause. Also Andre Braugher is great as Thomas the free well-educated black Bostonian.
Heavy hitting emotional impact as Blacks fight against the Fascist South, but find Union racism rampant. And the sense of becoming part of history, especially the final battle. Robert Gould Shaw's ideals for the country were as noble as fellow Bostonian, JFK, and in effect they shared the same fate, the fate that noble ideals often lead to.
Finally the theme music is perfect.

Summary: Glory
Review: This movie was one of the best movies I have ever seen. I don't usually cry in "human" movies (as opposed to "animal" movies), but this one came really close. The cast is well chosen and performed superbly. The setting is very realistic. I highly recommend this movie.

Summary: History Untold
Review: Not many Americans ever acknowledged the existence of Black soldiers in the Civil war, or World War 2 for that matter. Glory is the true story of how the Black Americans in the 54th Regimen fought for a country that didn't appreciate them. Not enough can be said about this movie. The story is solid, the performances by the actors is excellent. Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and several other black actors give fantastic performances as black men, but all of them very different black men. An escaped slave, a grave digger, and an educated free black man (from the time when blacks were free in Boston). Broderick gives one of his most unique performances to date, setting aside the image of Ferris Bueller to play a young Colonel who trains and prepares the men for combat. His performance is accurate, playing a young but smart and wise Commanding officer who genuinely believes his men are equal soldiers to any other regimen. The movie is powerful, beautiful, frightening and thought provoking. The men who died in this story died for real, and for almost nothing. Their story should be told to everyone, so they can realize that more then just the heroes who wrote history existed. Highly recommended, especially the Special Edition DVD. There are a lot of extras and interviews.

Summary: Best war history film ever!
Review: The first time I watched this film, I was taken aback by how real the images appeared. It reminded me of one of my high school history teachers who constantly reminded us younger students that "when these men fought, they didn't get back up and star in another movie." This couldn't be more true in the case of this film. The richness and clarity of reality portrayed in this film has never been seen since and probably won't for some time to come.
