Summary: Incredibly powerful, moving, and humane.
Review: This movie, which was nominated for three Oscars and won all three, should have swept the Oscars in 1989. Unfortunately, it was hampered by two sets of negative criticism: one which held the film should have been entirely about the African-American soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts, and not at all about their white officers; and one which said Matthew Broderick lacked the authority to be a believable military commander. Both schools of thought are ridiculous beyond words. What Glory celebrates is our common humanity, particularly the bond between soldiers fighting together for the sake of freedom; this is, in fact, the entire point of the film, and it would be impossible to depict if either whites or blacks were supernumeraries. As for Matthew Broderick's performance, for me his boyishness adds to its power. His character is a pampered young man from a privileged background who must, in a time of national emergency, become a leader of men, and Broderick is the perfect actor to play such a character. For me, this film goes almost beyond praise. The performances--not only Broderick's but also Denzel Washington's, Morgan Freeman's and Andre Braugher's--rank among the greatest of that decade; the battle scenes are played for maximum suspense and emotional impact; the cinematography of Freddie Francis is blazingly brilliant. I know there are people who haven't been moved by this film, but for the life of me, I can't understand why.

Summary: My All-time favorite
Review: I first saw this movie as an extra credit outing for my history class in 8th grade (11 years ago) and I was absolutely mezmerized. I don't get choked up easily in movies, then or now, but this was the first movie to ever really move me. When I stepped outside the movie theater that afternoon, I couldn't get the movie out of my mind- it's definately a film that stays with you in a haunting way. This movie sparked my interest in the Civil War because Glory draws you in- I could feel the dread and the nervousness of Robert as he got dressed that last morning. I absolutely adore this movie, but I refuse to watch it too much because I don't want to get tired of it. You will not be disappointed, this is a magnificent film- you will never look at Ferris Bueller the same way again! (if you can even watch it after seeing this movie)

Review: This movie is Historically accuraTE and It greatly entertaining It tells the story of the 54th Volunteer Regiment the first black regiment. It also has a great soundtrack. I would reccomend this movie to any movie goer.

Summary: Join all the black people laughing at Whitey!
Review: From Matthew Broderick's patronizing narration to Ed Zwick's Harvard-like Ethnic Study of the lyrical nature of the Afro-American, I have to say that this film never hits the mark for me.There are beautiful moments in the score, and the finale is a worthy one. But the wait of getting to some exciting moments is a long one. Sure Denzel Washington gets whipped and becomes a star and this is the beginning of some well-intentioned performances by Morgan Freeman, yet the movie lags from a sense of being preachey and needing to fulfill the needs of the PBS community. Besides the guy who gets hit in the head with a cannonball, there isn't much beyond a dry and questionable history lesson here. I don't think that the white people have to be unattractive to make a movie about American Race relations. And I don't think that black people need to be singing and cutting jokes to be worthy of sympathy. This is a movie that isn't about people; it is about social agendas of recent years in the United States. I don't need to check the box office to imagine how tepid the response that this film had overseas. That is because the themes and comments are as bottled as the provincial university it all came from.

Summary: Zwick puts "glory" in historic film
Review: Robert Gold Shaw (Mathew Broderick) is from a wealthy family. After he proves himself responsible in the army during the Civil War he becomes a captain. The opening scene is of Shaw's voice over through a letter to his mother telling her about how good things are going and how it is very unlikely that any thing terrible will happen. At the battle of Anteitam Creek he finds the horrors of his job as he sees many of his men getting killed and getting wounded himself. More of the horror for him is when he is at the hospital seeing a painful cutting procedure throught clothe and hearing the soldier screeming and begging for it to stop. When he returns home he is given the opertunity to be the colnel of the fifty-fourth regiment of all black soldiers. He takes it. The film takes you through the lives of the black soldiers. One of them is a very good friend of Shaws who always had a good life, but can't seem to make it through all the hardness of army life. Another balck soldier is a runaway slave who has problems with everything. The fact that the film wasn't nominated for best picture is sickening. The film is very powerful and honorable to the black soldiers who went through so much and made so many sacrifices to serve their country and eventualy give honor to the balck people of America. Edward Zwick is a great director and this is probably his best masterpiece. Of course it is one of the best war films ever made.

Summary: Glorious, just glorious
Review: While it goes without saying that Glory is one of the greatest Civil War movies ever made (alongside "Gettysburg" and "Gone With The Wind"), it's the extras on this DVD release that make the DVD worth every cent of your money. The retrospective featurette with commentary from Broderick, Freeman & co. is excellent, as is the documentary on the 54th, narrated by Freeman. This is a true example of the power of DVD.

Summary: What else is there to say?
Review: This movie is absolutely incredible! There is so much information here, but the historical accuracy is still there. And we see a group of men, both white and black, grow to maturity and honor that they otherwise might never have achieved. Morgan Freeman's character, I felt, served as the father figure to all of these young men in this regiment, and his wisdom helped to hold the entire regiment together. Matthew Broderick is excellent as the Commander who received his position for politcal reasons only and is in no way qualified to command this regiment. The men he commands are also not qualified for the positions they are in in the regiment. But everyone has the same goal in mind, and because of this they manage to become a more-than-competent fighting machine. The politicians and the military bigwigs finally come to realize that this black regiment that they developed strictly for their own political reasons is a real fighting regiment--and these men will fight for honor and glory. I won't give away the ending, but you might want to have a tissue or two handy. This is absolutely a movie to add to your library!

Summary: 5 stars is not nearly enough for this excellent movie
Review: Words can not really describe what a touching and grasping film this is unless you watch it. By far the greatest depiction of the Civil War ever made. The cinematography is absolutely top notch, the acting is superb and the war scenes are completely realistic . A must have for your movie collection.

Review: This is one movie that you are sure too never forget. The true story of the first black regiment ignites the screen in this brilliant masterpiece. I refuse to give anything away about this movie, except that it is one of the all time best. This is perhaps the most moving war movie of all time, even the hard-hearted will find it hard not to shed a tear.

Review: If your a Civil War fan, then I urge you to get it! It is the best that I've seen so far. This movie is very realistic, the sound of the muskets and the cannons are unbeleavable! (A lot better than the movie "Gettysburg," no offence) I don't want to tell you all the details of the movie, who ever is reading this review, because I want to keep it a surprise. I'll give you a few details of the movie (If you never seen it) one of the main characters is Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick and it's about the fifty-fourth Massechusetts first Black Regiment to fight in the Civil War, and Robert Goodshaw (Matthew Broderick) volenteered to lead it. That's all I'm going to tell you.
