Rating: Summary: CANNOT miss this movie -- a superb historical work Review: Of all movies I have ever seen that were based on the Civil War, this is by far my favorite. Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington give exemplary and memorable performances. Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes also give great performances. This movie accurately reflects the poor treatment and conditions of African American soldiers during the Civil War, and the hardships they faced to become a respected regiment and also become an influential factor in turning the Civil War in the favor of the Union. One of my all time favorite movies. I strongly recommend buying this movie. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Moving depiction of a Civil War scene Review: Anyone who has read some of the more comprehensive works on the Civil War knows how widespread and complex that conflict was, spanning thousands of miles, territories, armies and personalities. It is all the more necessary to add a correction - and this doesn't diminish a great film - that on balance, it was the dogged campaigning of U.S. Grant in the West, as well as the defeat of Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, which turned the tide for the Union. The film's emphasis - that Negro soldiers could indeed fight and gain honor and respect as well as freedom - is clearly established. "Glory" is a Civil War film that doesn't go for cliches (like the clumsy but well-crafted "Gettysburg") but hits on all the human emotion the viewer needs. The opening battle scene at Antietam shows a confused and terrified Col. Shaw (Matthew Broderick) in what was actually a Union victory. Shaw goes from the frying pan into the fire by accepting a commission to lead Negro troops. The brilliance of the film is that it relies sparingly on action: after Antietam, we see one skirmish and one more battle at the end. The heart of it is the transformation of each man into an honorable part of a rather bloody episode. All the performances were great. Well, Broderick does lend a youthful air to Col. Shaw, but he's good enough to carry it throughout the movie. Morgan Freeman does a great turn as the older, wiser soldier who sums up why they're there: to ante up, like men. Denzel Washington was also commendable. "Glory" ends in disaster, yet the message is hopeful and positive. The authenticity of the film goes a long way, as does the music. This is a must-have for any serious movie fan.
Rating: Summary: A study in leadership Review: Glory is a story with many components, starting at Antietam Creek and ending on a sandy beach on the coast of South Carolina. Mathew Broderick is excellent as the young Robert Gould Shaw who rises from a wounded captain in one regiment to colonel commanding the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiemnt; a regiment of black troops with white officers. When Broderick is offered the command of the regiment his reaction is worth seeing again, not to mention the initial reaction of Cary Elwes when he is offered the post of second in command. The making of a disparate group of young black men; some educated to a level equal to the officers and others with little if any formal education is insightful. The training these men endured is well depicted and accurate. Denzel Washington as a cynical young black is outstanding. Perhaps he was drawing on some of his own experiences in life as he made the charecter come alive. His resistance to Broderick in the matter of the flag is extremely powerful. There are a few down sides, small but worth noting for the record. At the time of his death Shaw was married; this is never mentioned and would have made quite an impact on the story line. Jane Alexander as his mother is fine but maybe the impact of his parents might have been further highlighted. These are the major points and don't really detract - they are jmust points that would have made the film more interesting. Look at the comparison between the 54th and the locally recruited freed slaves they meet in South Carolina. There is a bit of culture shock for both sides. The climactic battle is exceptional in it's depiction of the assault on the fort and the casualties the regiment suffered. The burial scene is quite moving. Throughout the film the music is a constant presence and enhances an already excellent film to even great heights. The film is a must for anyone with an interest in the Civil War or leadership under conflict and stress. This is an outstanding film that deserved more than one Oscar. If you watch it, your will remember it for a long time to come.
Rating: Summary: Justin Murphy review flawed. Review: I hate to say it but Justin Murphy doesn't know what he's talking about. Glory is a well ballanced epic with excellent acting tallent. It doesn't depict the Southern people as racist, it shows the truth about northern people though, they are and were just as racist even more so than the South. Matt Broadrick and Morgan Freeman got jipped as did the whole movie by the racist Motion Picture Accadamy, I think Broadrick did an awesome depiction of Shaw, certainly close to the man himself as he could have come. Glory is one of the two best Civil War films in Motion Picture History, Gettysburg being the other. It is a must have for educators.
Rating: Summary: A True Hollywood Classic! Review: I'm not much of a war movie person, but I was amazingly moved by this movie. Edward Zwick did a fantastic job directing the ensemble cast, and with such a compelling adaptation of the story of the 54th MA, the first black regiment to fight in the US Civil War, and its commanding officer, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, I have give this movie my thumbs up. This movie is very well-paced - surprising for this genre of movies, never feeling long at any point - and generally historically accurate (Watched this on TV the first time, and even then, I was totally glued). Washington got his Oscar for this - deservingly - but I also think that Freeman and Broderick were great in their roles as well. Broderick's portrayal of Colonel Shaw is definitely A+, and it's good to see Broderick in a role outside of comedies and action shows, proving that he can do things besides Ferris Brueller! Accompanied by excellent Oscar-winning cinematography and sound, especially at the scene of the battle of Fort Wagner, and with a score by James "Titanic" Horner (frankly, this score is MUCH better than Titanic anyday!), this film gets my vote for a being one that WILL withstand the test of time to become one of the classics in Hollywood history, for its portrayal of a very significant part of American History. This is inspite of it not being a "Best Picture" - and me not being an American!
Rating: Summary: Glory: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Review: Glory is an incredible war film. What more can be said? THE GOOD: Edward Zwick's directing is superb. Glory has a gritty and violent look that captures the brutality of the Civil War like no other. This is a film that needs to be heard through the stereo system. The sound effects are incredible and James Horner's score is the best of his career. THE BAD: While dramatically strong, the film has some minor historical inaccuracies. The recruits of the 54th are mostly depicted as runaway slaves and illiterates. In truth, most recruits were educated free-men with a lot to lose by joining the Army. Broderick's Shaw is also flawed. His depiction of a man with Abolitionist sympathies is untrue. He was a more complicated leader with more internal conflict about his position than the film depicts. THE UGLY: While the film is noble in its efforts to honor the fight for freedom, it falls into the age-old trap of so many other Civil War films in its depiction of Confederates as evil racists fighting for solely for the preservation of slavery. In an age of modern sensibilities, such generalizations do not help endear Confederate soldiers to the modern American in the way that they deserve to be. Regardless, "Glory" is a must-see. In company of its present competition it is indisputably the best piece of Civil War moviemaking ever attempted.
Rating: Summary: review Review: Film Review I liked the film although in some parts I thought it was weak and lacked realism. It still was good though in the way the plot was laid out, in the way they went into their first battle and had victory and little casualties. It made the men feel like they were invincible and nothing could beat them. 'Trip' was my favorite character as he 'put his money where his mouth was'. My favorite part was when Trip went to get his pay and when he was told he was only to get 12 pounds instead of 13 pounds he convinced everyone to rip up their pay sheets. When their leaders saw this they then to tore up their pay sheets and would not accept any.
Rating: Summary: glory Review: The movie 'Glory' is about An American Civil War and is between the black people and the white people. The film has many famous actors such as Denzel Washington and Mathew Broderick. The Black people were fighting for the right to be treated equally as the white people. This lead to war between the South of America and the North of America. It was based on a true story and had quite a lot of violence but was appropriate for the type of film which it was. The end was the saddest part because all the popular characters were killed and the black people lost the fight. There were some controversial issues in the movie such as the black men not being paid the same rate as the white people were paid even though they were doing exactly the same work, maybe even more. Our opinion of the movie was that it was an exciting movie with a meaning behind it and recommend it as a movie to see for ages around 13, 14 years and over as younger children might find it hard to understand.
