Summary: Stallone's Best Action in Years
Review: Best watched with minimal expectations. The action scenes are great. The movie is basically Die Hard in the mountains or Point Break with mountain climbing. The plot, however, doesn't make a bit of sense, so its just best to ignore it. Several obvious questions spring instantly to mind. Why are there so many henchmen in the 2nd plane? It's essentially a getaway vehicle. Why are they so well armed? All the agents are on the hijacked plan. Why do they carry cold weather clothing? They're on a plane. Enjoy the scenery.

Summary: Sound, Action, Popcorn City
Review: Buy it for the sound. There are few movies with a better soundtrack and soundfield. The first 10 minutes are great movie-making but almost unbearable to watch. Visually, there are a lot of breath-taking mountain scenes and the midair plane-to-plane scene is a standout on the DVD. I'd seen the movie at the theatre when it came out and later on VHS but the DVD version on a big screen with a good sound system is like a new movie. It's full of wild special effects, fantastic sound and a 5-star popcorn muching edge-of-your seat E-tictet ride!!

Summary: Not What I Remembered
Review: Cliffhanger is a high-paced action movie which pits Gabe (Sylvester Stallone), an experienced, but "tired of it all" mountain rescuer against a band of money-grubbing terrorists led by John Lithgow's character looking to retrieve their loot after it has been lost in the mountains.

When I first heard about the DVD release of Cliffhanger, it was sort of like a revival. Here is a film that I had remembered as being something of a better-than-your-average action movie with a rugged and brash demeanor. However, although some of the action sequences are still amazing, there seems to be a total abandonment of character development after the first half hour of the film. It seems at times that scenes are shortened too much, whereas otherwise they would have a much more poignant effect if lengthened.

John Lithgow's (in his pre 3rd-Rock days) character remains to me the high point of the film. As in his other notorious film, Raising Cain, he plays the same dignified, although completely insane mastermind, which I feel is the role that was truly meant for him.

Stallone, on the other hand, though still able to "bang heads" with the best of them, cannot compete on the same acting grounds as Lithgow.

If there is one thing about this movie that stands out from the rest, it is the breathtaking title sequence. To me, it was unexpected and added a sense of realism to the film, while giving the audience its first look at the grandeur of the mountainous landscape.

This movie is a good "ho-hum" ride with a couple of surprises and a lot of holes. Stallone's best work remains in the first two Rocky films, which, with immense character focus, brings you into the heart of the lead man. As for more modern Stallone films, I prefer Assassins (played as a one-on-one duel across from Antonio Banderas) and Demolition Man (a funny view of the future).

Summary: action movie, accept it
Review: Cliffhanger is an all out action movie, and this should not be forgotten. Although there are a few blaringly obvious mistakes in the climbing sequence, this does not take away the fact that this movie achives what it sets out to do: entertain the action-movie junkies. This movie is a must for all of the Sylvester Stallone fans out there, and for anyone who enjoys the typical one-man-aginst-the-bad-guys movies. John Lithgow is excellent as the baddy, although he does always look a bit to kind. Sly Stallone does what he does best, running around saving people with as little clothes on as he can possibly manage, and the other cast work well as either bad guys or good guys. Warning though for those weaker viewers out there, this movie is gory, the deaths scenes being the worst.

Summary: Dreadful
Review: Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

It's a Sylvestor Stallone movie. That should be your first and only necessary clue. If, like me, you have a fascination with this whole climbing boom and get sucked into watching this, you'll quickly discover what a dog this movie is. Bad acting, bad plot (loosely based on real-life events but not enough so to save it), bad, bad, bad.

Only climbing movie that's worse than this is "Into Thin Air." That's one of the greatest books ever, but as a movie it's a train wreck.

Summary: High-Caliber Excitement!
Review: Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone) was haunted by a woman falling to her death. Her equipment started to break while she was dangling stories high from the ground. Mountain climbing had never been so difficult and Walker pulled himself toward her to grab her. He caught her as she fell, but her hand started to slip. It was a terrifying moment. When she fell, he was devastated and felt guilty for many years. It wasn't his fault, it was slippage. Well, in present day, John Lithgow (wannabe wiseguy) has dropped millions of dollars into some snowy mountains. He and his group of hooligans try to recover the money and they have the deity and Michael Rooker to help them get it back. Lots of mayhem and avalanches galore! I was amazed with the ability that Stallone had. Climbing a freezing mountain in only a t-shirt, jumping off of cliffs and swimming underneath some ice. Gargantuan! Stallone vs. Lithgow at the end was a bit pitiful. Why let the 3rd Rock guy even punch you a couple of times? That was nice of you Stallone. Well, Renny Harlin's "Cliffhanger" does deliver and it won't disappoint any Stallone fan. Icy entertainment!

Summary: Excellent DVD demo disc!
Review: Great visuals, and excellent sound make this a great movie to show off DVD to your friends and family. It also doesn't hurt that while the story is predictable, it's very entertaining! The opening sequences with the helicopter flying around will make you turn your head to 'see' the helicopters which sound like they are all around you. Great stuff!

Summary: Action & Scenery a plus...
Review: Has Sylvester Stallone ever made a 5-Star movie? You bet. "Rocky" is one, and "Cliffhanger" is the other. John Lithgow plays the perfect villan set beautifully in the snow covered Rockies. This movie is non stop action and it has a bit of everything... like a nice plane crash scene; above average dialogue (yes, even for Sly); some good chases; kids on snowboards; and innocent people being mamed. There's even a few touching moments with Sly and his girlfriend (or should we say exgirlfriend?). This DVD package offers some nice features and the widescreen version with the great views is the only way to go. Stallone's made a ton of movies and this one is easily one of his best. Great action flick!
