Rating: Summary: Surprising performances in a shallow plot Review: Watch this one for Diane Venora's performance as a KGB agent. She makes up for the tedium of the climax, and even for the inadequate use of the statesmanlike but oh-so-approachable Sidney Poitier. Willis and Gere are a complete bore, but the writers do keep you guessing on who the assassin's target really is. One other noteworthy aspect of the film is a gut-wrenching scene with the Jackal and a techno-geek at an impromptu weapons testing range. Just put the popcorn aside after the previews.
Rating: Summary: This really ain't a bad movie... Review: Okay, here we go. Bruce Willis stars as some assassin called "The Jackal" who has to blow the first ladies' head right off. Then, the F.B.I. finds out about this whole operation from a Russian who was zapped by the K.G.B. so they have no other choice but to release an ex-I.R.A. sharp-shooter named Declan Mulqueen. What's that? You expected more?! Oh, no, no, no. That is the entire plot. And although it sounds like a crappy plot that has more or less been done about a million times, The Jackal is truly a great film. I consider it to be the 2nd greatest action film of 97 (The first being Face/Off of course). I really would have given the film 5 stars had it not been for the boring lovey-dovey scenes between Richard Gere and the two women in this flick who carry a gun. His old girlfriend (who is a great shot.) and Major Valentina Koslova (played and voiced with a pretty good Russian accent by Diane Verona). But I'd have to say that the best thing about this movie is the way-cool, too-good-to-be-true music score! Carter Burwell did the music for the movie (he also did the great score to "Fargo"). So, if you haven't seen this movie yet...go rent it! And if you're a real die-hard-action-movie-lover...go buy this movie right now!!! You won't be disappointed!!!
Rating: Summary: Booo Review: Not the worst movie in the history of the Remake sub-category, but so close it can't be distinguished from its pitiful contenders.See the original instead, which is really a delightfull thriller.
Rating: Summary: I thought it could of been more realistic. Review: Let me start off by saying that some of the things in that movie almost seem impossible. Like the sceen with the gun. I want to know how are they going to get a gun that size past the custom officals? If you can give a reasonable answer than don't be afraid to email me. But overall I think it was worth seeing if you liked THE DAY OF THE JACKAL.
Rating: Summary: Intense suspense and exceptional story. Review: The characters are rich and you care about what happens next. The action fits the as the puzzle slowly come together. It criss crosses and leads you upon a sharpe edge. The word for this movie is suspense to the end.
Rating: Summary: The Jackal Review: The Jackal does a good job at putting scenes together, and still keeps up the thrill. The actors in the movie that includes Bruce Willis and Richard Gere both did a exquisit job at the way the played there charectars.
Rating: Summary: absolutely abysmal... Review: Oh no!!! What in the world is this??!!! This film is supposed to be based on Forsyth's brilliant novel, dealing with an assasination attempt on Charles de Gaulle in Paris? Ok, so the average American viewer probably wouldn't be able to find France on a world map, much less know who Charles de Gaulle was. I can understand the need to move the movie to a location that Americans can relate to (America, of course), and to provide us with the first lady as an all-American victim. But why did the movie have to be so extremely unrealistic, openly insulting the intelligence of any viewer? Here are just a few examples: How likely is it, that the CIA and the KGB would require the help of an IRA terrorist to find the Jackal? How likely is it, that said terrorist would dutifully and honorably help them, to the point of almost having an erotic relationship with one of the KGB's iron ladies? Why in the world does the Jackal go through all that trouble to build an elaborate cannon with video-guidance that can be radio-controlled from miles away via satellite, only to stupidly sit 10 yards away from the crime scene while firing? Why would an IRA terrorist who has murdered dozens of innocent civilians in cold blood suddenly care about the life of an unknown little girl he has never seen before? Here he has the Jackal and the little girl at gunpoint - he only needs to pull the trigger to get his long-sought revenge. He opts instead to mushily save the girl's life, drop his gun, and place his life in the hands of the Jackal. Isn't it great that he has adopted the moral values of a good, law-abiding citizen? And why does his former terrorist partner-turned-housewife wear an evening gown when she shows up at the last instant to shoot the Jackal from behind and save the day, like in hundreds of bad movies before this? Good thing she had a spare gun hidden under her laundry for the last 20 years... Seriously, this movie hurts, even if you haven't read the book. If you know the book, which deals with a professional killer's brilliantly and meticulously executed assasination attempt, this childish display of technology and fireworks will put you in agony. From the opening scene to the utterly predictable, cheesy showdown, this movie can only be considered a bad joke. If this movie were a comedy, the lapses of reason could be excused, but it takes itself very seriously. The only reason this movie merits two stars is because of the acting talent of Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. Sadly, they can do nothing to save the story.

Rating: Summary: Great Story Line which fails to meet potential Review: Rex Stewart Movie Review: Jackal This is a great story line, poorly executed. During my first viewing, I was not impressed by any aspect of the movie, except its potential to be a great movie. The story line has resulted in a Line of Fire wanna-be. Pro's: Best Gun this decade. Director: 3/10 The Director really falls down in what could have been a great movie. I do not know all of the limitations imposed, but clearly he had the budget for a great cast of characters. He does a poor job of maintaining the drama. The pace is maintained. The movie is reasonably exciting, but a relatively smooth sine wave. I am surprised that in the light of the poor writing and directing the Director did not resort to more violence and high impact theatrics. After all, he does have the best gun of the decade. The Director and writers fail to generate empathy for the protagonist, a common failing of potentially great movies. (see Indochine). Leading Actor: 4/10 I really like Bruce Willis, but he was mis-cast and mis-written for the part. The character just is not the Jackal. (See John Malkovich, Line of Fire). Supporting Actor: Richard Gere. I think I would like R. Gere if I met him (and lord knows he is a heart throb, for some), but I am rarely impressed by his acting. 5/10. Movie Rating: ** It is very watchable, and I could watch it again without complaint, but it does not live up to its potential. Even the critics can be wrong, Rex Stewart Rex Stewart rating Scale Overall movie rating: 0 Not worth watching 1 Worth watching once. Assuming $1 rental on a slow Sunday afternoon. 2 Could watch it twice within three years without complaint. 3*** Worth a full price theatre ticket. 3 * . 4* An excellent movie. Worthy of purchase or multilpe rentals over several years. 5* Blockbuster. Overwhelming. Would own the movie and watch it for a lifetime. Other movie aspects: 5/10 Meets expectations for the movie as I believe it is projected.
