Summary: Sean's best
Review: A beautifully crafted movie- Tom Clancy's book was long, convoluted, and hard to follow but the movie was direct, suspenseful, and held me to the edge of my seat. Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin both deliver magnificent performances.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The Best Portrayal Showing the Height of the Cold War
Review: This movie is one of the best attempts to capture an excellent novel into a time frame of two hours. The Hunt for Red October gives the viewer a Periscope into the interworkings of the US vs. USSR as they play each other's hand to capture a renegade Russian Skipper. The Story Line Follows Both the "buccaneer" CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin and the "crazy" Submarine Captain Marco Rammius (Sean Connery) as they anticipate the others moves. This is a movie that requires no popcorn or restroom break. Prepare yourself for the Blockbuster of your life.

-This movie is the first of the Jack Ryan series ( both Books and Movies)

Summary: Excellent Movie but poor quality for DVD
Review: The movie is great!

but the picture quality ranks way below that of the average DVD.....but still is better than VHS.

Summary: Wow is Connery good in this one!
Review: Sean Connery underplays the role of the soviet sub captain exceptionally well. There is tactile suspence, adventure, and intruige in this first movie based on a Clancey story.

The supporting cast is also great. It felt like the casting director had read the book.

Great stuff.

Summary: This has to be the best movie ever!
Review: I've read the book three times and seen the movie more times than I can count. Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin deliver, but it isn't perfect. McTiernan could have cut a few of the scenes with the Russian embassador and added more stuff from the book, e.g. the Red October ramming the Konovalov instead of its own torpedo ing the Alfa. Just little things to enhance the film. McTiernan also should have explained Nadia Ramius' instead of saying, "It's the 1 year anniversary of his wife's ." For all you know, she could have committed or been hit by a truck. However, The Hunt for Red October is overall a great movie. If you disagree, let me know. Thanks.

Summary: Hunt doesn't find immediate success
Review: The Hunt for Red October doesn't seem to fit with the other two movie adaptations of Tom Clancy's military thrillers. For one, Alec Baldwin wasn't my choice for the man to portray Jack Ryan. He's too young-looking and proper to be a former Marine turned CIA analyst. Sean Connery is perfect as Raimus, however, and does a capable job as the renegade Russkie. Another problem was the supporting cast. With James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Joss Ackland, et. al it was like one of those epic Irwin Allen disaster flicks: too many extra characters to keep track of. The biggest problem that I had with the movie is that it runs too long. Similiar to Clancy's style of writing, the movie takes too long to get to the point. We don't need to see every single top secret meeting and briefing between Soviet and U.S. leaders. The aircraft carrier scene could have been cut totally. And the sub chasing sequences toward the end are essential to the movie itself, but start to resemble something that belongs in a Star Trek movie(with all the twists, turns, and torpedo stunts). All in all, Hunt least fits what Clancy was [for once] able to richly portray in the original novel.

Summary: definately a nail-bitter
Review: this movie is awesome. even i, who is not exactly hooked on war movies, loved it. sean connery gives a great performance, as does the rest of the cast. it's a nail-bitter, but definately worth seeing. GO SEAN!!!

Summary: Alec is the true 'Jack Ryan'
Review: This movie did justice to Tom Clancy's book. It is an excellent adaptation of one of his novels (unlike 'Clear and Present Danger'). The chemistry between Baldwin and Connery is great. And although they had small roles, Sam Neill and Stellan Skargard were excellent as well. Speaking Russian in the first 10 minutes of the movie was also great. One wonders what 'Patriot Games' and 'Clear..." would have been like with Baldwin in them. I say 100% better.

Summary: Very suspenseful
Review: The movie takes you on a glorious trip the first time you see it. Sean Connery shows that you just get better with age. He's at the top of his form here. Beter than he was as James Bond or Indiana Jones' father. But here's what you do. See the movie again a year or so later. I guarantee, it will be just as suspenseful. Most movies that claim to be suspense, once you see it, it loses that element of surprise. When I first saw it, it was around the time when the Soviet Union was in existence and they seemed to be like a dog you pass by that growls but you're not sure if it'll jump up and bite you. In subsequent times, I noticed the drama being about how credible Jack Ryan was as a expert. Most of the time Alex Baldwin annoys me in his roles (watch him in the edge) but here, he carries off the rookie begging to be believed (a character played almost as well by John Cusack in Con Air). I loved the music. Also good to see blacks working with technical equipment.

Summary: Great movie, terrible DVD. The picture is awful.
Review: I was most disappointed when I saw the quality of the picture. Apparently Paramount is not concerned about the appearence of the DVD. It is less then VHS. It is a shame to ruin a fine movie as this to simply rush it out to DVD in this condition. I hope they pay closer attention to the Indiana Jones series when it is released.
