Summary: anyone else have an error?
Review: Two copies of this disc, both from amazon.com, have an error in exactly the same location. The error, a 2-3 second pause, occurs right after the reactor "explosion" when Sam Neil's character manhandles another character for mumuring that "ramius will get us all killed". i must agree with the other postings - the quality of this disc is awful. shame on paramount for releasing it. its one of the finest action movies ever made; a great story told very well with awesome visuals. but the low quality of the transfer takes away from all of that.

Summary: Good film, poor DVD quality
Review: Hunt for Red October is a good film, but this DVD version has a VERY poor encoding quality. In the scene of the Brrefing at the whitehouse you can se the "pixelating" MPEG effect on the walls and in some scenes the contrast is very low. I was expecting something better from Paramount.

Summary: One of the best movies of all time.
Review: A great adaptation of the Tom Clancy novel. This is by far the best book to movie translation I have ever seen. The story is superb as is the cinematography. Do not pass this one up!

Summary: Technology Thriller in an Epic Extraordinaire
Review: This movie was a spectacle to see at the theaters. I remember seeing it on one of the largest screens in the Washington DC area, and I was blown away by the colors and vividness of the photography. This movie shines on DVD like it never has since I first saw it. The underwater scenes on VHS were muddy and indistinct, lacking any resolution, and I knew that without 2.35 widescreen I was missing the spectacle of this definitive submarine epic. For those into sheer spectacle, take in the awesome sight of the missile launch tubes in the Red October. The camera pans back to show the endless array of silos, and this scene still gives me a chill. John McTiernan crafted an epic techno-thriller that stands up as one of the most intellectually involving movies of its kind. Except for occasional graininess in the transfer, this new DVD version has restored my love in movies and one of Clancy's best stories.

Summary: The Best
Review: This is the single finest movie I have ever seen. I admit that I am only 14 years old, but after the first time I saw it, I went out ant bought a T-Shirt and the soundtrack to it! That was when I was seven years old. It still remains my favorite movie to this very day. Sean Connery gives a tremendous performance as the Russian submarine captain. Alec Baldwin is good in a well played performance. In short.....SEE THIS MOVIE!

Summary: Earth to Alec Baldwin
Review: I'm wondering: how foolish does Alec Baldwin feel, now that he's blown starring in the biggest franchize since . . . since . . . Indiana Jones! And to the same guy who owns that series, Harrison Ford! Sure, maybe Baldwin wants to be a "serious" actor, but I can't see how being Han Solo or Indiana Jones has hurt Ford's "serious" acting roles (cf. "Witness" "Frantic" etc.) The movie itself is wonderful, with a crackling performance by all -- yes, even Baldwin who went on to make the unforgettable "Miami Blues." 'Nuf said.

Summary: Military intrigue with a twist
Review: I have seen this movie more times than I care to count, and I always seem to glean something new from each individual viewing. This is an essential movie for anyone who enjoys miliary/spy type of movies. The action is swift, the dialogue is assured, and the plot will keep you in suspense. Obviously, Connery and Baldwin have an excellent rapport, and Scott Glenn is cast perfectly as Capt. Mancuso. I personally think that this is the best of the Jack Ryan series although I am looking forward to the forthcoming "Sum of All Fears." This is an outstanding movie and I can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed

Summary: Top Notch adaptation of the Clancy Techno-Thriller
Review: This is one of the best submarine movies I've seen. The plot of the movie is that a new Russian submarine, the "Red October", has been completed and has been launched into the North Atlantic. It is equipped with a special reactor which makes it virtually silent. The Americans fear that the submarine is going to sail across the Atlantic and fire its ICBMs at the United States. Sean Connery gives a first rate performance as Marko Ramius, the captain of the "Red October". He looks exactly how I'd picture a Russian sub skipper, and he even speaks fluent Russian throughout the film. James Earl Jones stars as an American Admiral who has the information about the "Red October". He calls on Alec Baldwin (Jack Ryan) to confirm the information. Baldwin gives an excellent performance as Ryan. He takes a nasty helicopter ride to the submarine USS Dallas, who is captained by actor Scott Glenn. There, they follow the "Red October", who Ryan believes is trying to defect instead of attack. Ramius concocts a plan to remove his crew and then tells them he's going to scuttle his ship when in reality Ryan and the Dallas are going to help with the defection. Another Russian submarine makes this a sticky situation for both Ryan and Ramius. In the end, we see the "Red October" sailing up a river in the United States, with Ramius and Ryan on the bridge. First class acting and edge-of-your-seat action make this film worthy of viewing many times over.

Summary: Only the lack of a THX dvd keeps this from ranking 5 stars
Review: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, the third film in John McTiernan's "holy trinity" of action films (following 1987's PREDATOR and 1988's DIE HARD) ranks as one of the finest action thrillers of modern times. What makes it rise miles above slop like the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced CRIMSON TIDE is the intelligent script. Viewers feel like they are immersed in this military underwater world, complete with submariner jargon that hasn't been "dumbed down" or "conveniently explained" for you. The story is tense, believable, and PLAUSIBLE, factors often missing from lesser knock-offs of this film.

Alec Baldwin brings so much believability and humanity to the character of CIA analyst Jack Ryan that Harrison Ford's subsequent portrayals of Ryan, albeit in far inferior movie sequels, seem wooden and stiff. But that is mostly the fault of the scripts he had to work with. And Philip Noyce, who directed Ford in the 2 Clancy movies so far, just isn't the director McTiernan is.

But what this DVD SORELY lacks is the THX treatment that the RED OCTOBER laser disc got. Why Paramount didn't insist on it is a mystery to me.

Great, great movie, but it deserves the superior picture and sound that THX affords. Hate to say it, but the laser disc beats the DVD in this case.

If you pay close attention to the RED OCTOBER movie trailer included on this DVD, though, you can see a shot of footage of some AWAC planes that didn't make it into the final film. That's the fun of movie trailers included on DVDs. You get to see what the trailer editors had to work with long before the final cut of the film was delivered to the distributors for release. (Another example: the trailer for BATMAN RETURNS featured a different take of a Michelle Pfeiffer line reading than the one that ended up in the film - a noticeably different one. But I digress...)

Back to RED OCTOBER: Great film! Even a buddy of mine who is career military finds this film fascinating and believable! But you are not getting the best video transfer available by buying the DVD.

Summary: The best of the Jack Ryan film series.
Review: Based on Tom Clancy's 1984 novel of the same title, "The Hunt for Red October" is the first Jack Ryan adventure on film. Although I like Harrison Ford better in the role of Jack Ryan than either Alec Baldwin or Ben Affleck, "Red October" is the best of the Ryan films partly because of the script, but largely because of the ensemble cast including Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, James Earl Jones and, of course, Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius, the Lithuanian-born commanding officer on the Soviet nuclear submarine Red October who seeks to defect to the United States. Tension builds as Ramius and the Red October move closer to U.S. waters with the Soviet Navy in pursuit and U.S. forces unsure of Ramius' true intentions. "The Hunt for Red October" is a taut thriller, an excellent movie based on a modern masterpiece of a novel, and I fully recommend it.
