Summary: Pickles in my Trix
Review: so here's the deal: I may like trix as much as the next guy & I may like pickles too, but it doesn't mean that I like them both at the same time in the same dish. And that's my basic problem with Kill Bill. The combination of genres is just not to my taste. Obviously there are a lot of fans out there who like the combinations & paraphrasing of different film genres, but to me the movie just looks like a mess. It may be that I don't catch all of the references, though I suspect that the target audience for the film really boils down to the few people in the world who actually study Mr. Tarantino's influences (i.e. all 10 people in the world who have written books about yakuza films or Hong Kong Kung-fu films). This really detracts from any emotional attachment to the film and, as a result, at the end I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters. After watching, it made me feel about as well as I might after eating a bowl of trix cereal with pickle juice. Think I'll be passing on seconds.

Summary: Tarantino's Worst Film To Date
Review: Before you jump to any conclusions after reading the title of my review, let me clear a couple things up. One, I usually love Tarantino--his directing, writing, the films he's produced, etc.--and two, the reason I didn't like Kill Bill Volume 1 had nothing to do with not liking the fight scenes or violence/gore. I love that stuff and that's the only part of the film that I found even mildly entertaining.Instead, the problem with Kill Bill Volume 1 is that it is extremely boring, almost completely lacks suspense, has awful pacing, and makes a number of self-indulgent stylistic missteps. I say "almost completely lacks suspense" only because of the first, relatively short section, where Uma Thurman's character, a former "hitperson", fights with another of the same kind, played by Vivica A. Fox. Suspense arises here because we don't know who the characters are yet, we don't know anything about the plot, we don't know what their motives are, etc. There is a sense of venturing into the unknown, where anything could happen. However, after this, Tarantino chooses to cling too tightly to his beloved device of non-sequential story construction, and the bulk of the film concerns Uma Thurman's attempt to take down a character whom we already know she has killed. That saps all of the tension from the rest of the film and makes it plod along as a fulfillment of something we're already aware of. It has all the drama of listening to your spouse tell _that_ story for the fiftieth time, this instantiation being filled with enough detail to take up an hour or two, and you're trying to read a book while they're telling it. Yes, Tarantino references tens of other films and genres in a "homage" that geeky fanboys can have a party game with--the one who names the most receives a free graphic novel and a case of Hawaiian Punch. Who cares? That in itself doesn't make Kill Bill a good story any more than a pointless clipfest of those films would make a good story. There is a reason that DVD's consisting only of promotional trailers aren't usually bestsellers. Yes, there are some interesting shots and intriguingly blocked scenes in Kill Bill. However, there aren't enough of them to make the film succeed if looked at merely as a series of images rather than a story. And yes, as I mentioned, I thought the over-the-top violence/gore was entertaining. If looked at isolated from its context, Quentin almost outdoes Sam Raimi ala Evil Dead here. However, and this is a big however due to having to consider context, Raimi's gallons of blood worked much better-because they were in an engaging, suspenseful story. In Kill Bill, the violence was almost boring. In an effort to be "retro hip", Tarantino includes a number of elements that blend with the film as seamlessly as President Bush in an Iraqi mosque. These are ubiquitous and varied, ranging from the stilted dialogue in the kitchen scene near the beginning (and this coming from someone who usually writes brilliant dialogue), to the strained inclusion of Sonny Chiba, to the ridiculous presence of a female Japanese band who can't sing or play their instruments--even though they're only trying to play I-IV-V "rockabilly" (and by the way, if this is what Tarantino think counts as quality music, what was he doing as a judge on American Idol?), to the almost obligatory occurrence of an anime scene. The latter is there just because Quentin and the fanboys think it's cool. For me, however, it underscores both the problem with most anime and with Kill Bill--yes, the subject matter, the violence, the attitude, etc. are interesting, but the animation, the storytelling, the pacing, and just about everything else sucks, and there are a number of inexplicable stylistic choices (such as the Caucasian-looking, big-eyed characters in anime). "Forced" is probably the best way to describe the plethora of references and stylistic decisions in Kill Bill. Even the foot fetish stuff didn't work for me this time around, and I share the fetish with Tarantino. I'm not usually one to recommend tempering self-indulgence, and I suppose it doesn't matter anyway, since at this point people are going to love Tarantino films just because they're Tarantino, although if this film were made by anyone else, it would have earned the reputation of the 1998 Jeremiah Chechik-directed The Avengers instead. But if this is a sign of the quality to come, if Quentin is going to make further films that amount to laundry lists of all the stuff he likes _just because he likes it_, like a mega-budget mix-tape for a new girlfriend, I'm not watching any longer.

Summary: Bad To Be Bad!
Review: The film contains a lot of things I dislike.
1) Uma Therman, what a strange looking woman, puts me off. 2) Its directed by a psychopathic violence fiend. 3) The best characters are the ones Uma tries to kill. 4) Utter violence does not make great films, it makes mindless regurgitated stuff for aggressive males. 5) Its directed AT psychopaths and violence fiends. 6) Its extremely disjointed and misleading. 7) Finally the gore is over the top, makes Blade look sensible.

Summary: Great Movie. Terrible DVD
Review: Exactly. Kill Bill vol. 1 itself is a great action flick. It's extremely gorey and violent to almost a comedic extent at times but for fans of martial arts movies or Tarantino, it will not disappoint. However this is, obviously a rushed DVD. There are very limited extras and since vol 2 is out in theaters, it will only be a matter of time until we see the special edition with deleted/extended scenes, and a collector's box featuring the 2 volumes together in time for christmas. Be warned that during one particular ultra violent action scene, the screen flashes from color to black and white in order to avoid the NC-17 rating. If you want to see Tarantino's film uncensored, then buy the Japanese import or wait for the next dvd release. If this doesn't bother you and you just want to see the movie you saw at the theater then pick this up. Just please don't give Miramax your money twice.

Summary: Memories of days long gone!
Review: Quentin Tarantino has become one of my favorite movie directors. This film has my mind moving in all different directions. The ultra-violence in his movies is nothing new (And it is very violent! Don't watch it if you don't like blood with your movies!). It's the visual imagery and sheer brilliance of directing that's just amazing about this film! Thurman fits the bill (no pun intended) as the super hero. The supporting cast is great! Tarantino remembers, just like I do, about the Saturday matinees that featured Kung Fu flicks that this movie tries and succeeds in re-creating. This is just great movie making! I can't wait for Volume 2!

Review: All you have to know about this movie is that the next seven (7) pages of reviews are all by nameless and repetitive authors...and dated on May 15th. Shameful. This movie is crap, and most people know that. Read read read all these repetitive reviews that go back 50 pages from people that dont exist. (insert mad screw you thingy).

Summary: Good action flick, but keep the kids away
Review: The time spent viewing the first half of Tarantino's latest film floats by without notice. Perfect timing, deft acting performances, and a visual style all to it's own are the highlights of the first half of Tarantino's latest film. Uma plays the perfect femme fatale as The Bride. Her low-key, yet intense, portrayal of a woman intent on revenge is believable and powerful. The greatest accomplishment in Kill Bill has to be the timing. Not for a second are you catching the time on your watch, thinking about the cute girl who you saw at lunch today, or wondering why monkeys don't grow beards. Every minute, every scene, is filled with important story pieces and action. If there were ever a perfect action flick, this may be it. But that isn't to say that the movie doesn't have any flaws. Guys may have a hard time trying to get their girlfriends to attend a movie as violent as Kill Bill; heads are decapitated, blood sprays liberally, and rape is a prominent theme in the film. The film may also pose a threat to those not accustomed to directing style of Tarantino. He quickly moves scene to scene, not often leaving the viewer to catch their breath- a style also seen in the work of Guy Ritchie. Overall, Kill Bill is a very entertaining, and very violent, action flick that'll leave you on the edge of your seat waiting for volume two.

Kill Bill - Hell no! This was a film based purely on action, with no thought on a complex storyline. A simple revenge based film, with admittedly good choreography, but unrealistic battles and a general poor film Everyone also seems insistent that Tarentino is a genius. To my mind, for genius read pretentious. Some scenes were genius, but the anime sections went on far too long, and as for other parts... Actions fanatics may enjoy this. I certainly did not

Summary: Finally something fresh!!!
Review: The last months in the movie industry has been nothing but remakes, sequils, and live-action versions of comic books. I was actually going to see a different movie when I saw this, but this was the only thing playing. I watched it and was amazed. Q.T. has done it again, and this is by FAR my favorite of his movies. It was absolutely amazing. Though there is an extremely enormous amount of violence in the film, it is presented in a way that it doesnt even seem like overkill or even very gratuitious. The story line is completely original, the casting was excellent, and the filming could be described as nothing more than fabulous! I bought the DVD the day it came out, and I'd recommend this movie to everyone. It's money well spent!
